Hello 4MR. First thanks for the thermal optic reviews. I have looked at 40 plus youtube videos and your channel provides very thorough reviews. I am hoping you can help me with a few options a good quality thermal scope for an ar 15 223 / 5.56. I have a budget of about $2500. I plan to hunt hogs within 50 to 100 yards. I don't want sacrifice on visual quality but I dont plan on shooting more than 100 to 150 yards. What are some thermal scopes you would recommend for this situation? Thanks.
Cody Tatum sorry for such a late reply, just saw your comment. I suggest the scope shown in this review. It has a perfect focal range for what you described as I typically hunt hogs 80-100 yards out personally. Keep in mind going with a less powerful magnification will make zeroing a bit more challenging. I have only compared this to Pulsar’s offering, and for the money I feel the ATN gives you a bit more bang for your buck. I do have a comparison video if you want more details.
I purchased the ATN THor 4 4.5-18x. After one week of use the internal shutter got stuck and I had to send in back for a warranty repair. I received the scope back in 2 weeks and began having issues this time with the sensor by the end of the week. After contacting customer support again, they had me send the unit back and sent me a bran new one overnight. I hunt on average three nights a week and have been using this new unit for almost 3 months and have had zero issues with it. ATN's customer service has been top notch and has treated me as if my concern was a top priority. The latest firmware update has fixed the audio and video being out of sync.
Your videos are pretty good. They’re the most in-depth videos I’ve seen. I’d love to see you do more thermal vs thermal or night vision vs night vision.
That's certainly what we did for many of our rifles & scopes, regardless of thermals or not. It's just important to do a function check on the weapon in the ambient conditions, just SOP. And if you're coming in from very cold weather into a warm house, you'll see the setup get condensate on them, which you'll have to wipe down and all...CLP on your weapons, or another comparable choice.
I have a suggestion, as a professional photographer for 52 years, the optics are fogging up even perhaps the sensor is affected. Bag your scope with a trash bag before you get in your truck. This will capture the colder but less moist air and when you get out of the vehicle then unwrap it. The warm moist air is condensing on your lenses and or sensor temporally. What is worse though is the air which is moving in and out of the device has contaminates which can eventually leave this on the interior of the lens. Lenses focus by moving their distance farther away or closer to the sensor. Lenses expand and contract and breathe so to speak. This is how spots appear in the interior of lenses on elements which are not exposed directly to the outside. I expect ATN has done a great job of designing their products to be moisture resistant but unless the whole unit is sealed and nitrogen purged, those critical elements will eventually equalize its interior pressure with the outside. So put a trash bag around it before you leave the house. Let the scope equilibrate in that dry bagged air and your scopes or any optics will last longer. Having said all this what you see may be thermal shock and have nothing to do with or solved by my suggestions. When I was required to photograph events where I was in and out of air conditioning and then plunged in to Texas gulf coast humidity. My assistant would be standing by with another camera which they had kept out of doors, bagged and waited for me to appear following thE action. They would had me the other camera and quickly run back inside and bag the camera I was shooting with. Otherwise the lens fogged and I have a pissed off client. Later in life, I served aboard a research vessel for 15 years, I kept a camera in an ice chest, no ice of course, outside in a secure location to grab ready to go if I needed to follow the action outside. Early video cameras were so sensitive to this that the read/ write head had to be heated. It's a THANG you can watch for and avoid with a simple trash bag and forethought.
Thinking of getting one, but I don't like the internal battery. Eventually that battery will fail making it an expensive brick. Do you know if it is replaceable or can it be powered externally like the thor HD?
Jeff Huntley yes I will, I had the first ever freeze the other day after this was uploaded. Held the power down until the device shutdown, and then turned it back on and had no further issues
I’ve just brought the 4K pro. It’s a great scope for the money, but now after watching your videos I want the thermal. You’re going to break my bank account 🤣🤣🤣
watched a couple of your videos on this optic and information vids. great stuff. Question, can you do a video on comparison of 384 vs 640 thermal sernsors? Ive tried to find a decent video on this topic, and haven't found one.
I had an issue. the screen froze in the first week. and I could not even shut off the device so I held all three buttons down the one above and below power button for 15 seconds. And then it reset device since then no further issues. Knock on wood
Regarding the hot cold phenomenon, you do know it is fog on the lens that occurs whenever glass moves from cold to hot environment. You dont wear glasses so it might be why it was a mystery.
I understand the phenomenon, the humidity in the air condensates on the cooler surface, causing some optical interferences. I was just reporting that this does have some effect on the device.
It would be completely unnecessary given that the rifle does ballistic calculations for you and does holdover. Also it has a plethora of useable reticles.
I have one, depending on what you mean by identify if you're trying to figure out what animal it is and get a good shot then yes, but identifying a person at that range is impossible
So based on what I’m seeing, would I be better off going with a 384 4.5 -18 versus 640 1-10 ? They’re basically the same price. Based on what I’m seeing if I crank up the power on the 640 it’s going to be blurry. But the low and power of 4.5 on the 384 will be clearer? I placed an order today and I am wondering if I should cancel? Thank you for your in-depth reporting
Just an observation: Cold objects often attract surface condensation when they are exposed to warmer, more humid environments. Perhaps your optic is just fogged up from condensation when it’s transferred from your air conditioned vehicle to the warmer environment outside? That would make any of your optic’s automatic functions useless.

I've had the Thor 4 640 1-10 for a month now. That thing is stupid!! I'm gonna get fired because all I wanna do is hunt in the dark!! I can see mice running around in the field! I think I'm gonna send it back and upgrade to the next model up because I'd like more magnification. Other than that this is the most fun I've had in a long time!! And I have to say, ATNs customer service has been amazing.
I have the same one and I'm not impressed..when i go to white hot , the whole image is white especially in background..tryed all adjustments and no luck..better on hot black...
It works during the day and night, but works better at night. Thermal measures the temperature difference between things, so a living thing will have much less contrast with the environment when it’s a hot day compared to at night. In cold weather it won’t matter as much as living things will still have lots of contrast with the environment day or night. My initial review has daytime footage.
I've been thinking about getting one, I see mostly good reviews with a few that had trouble with the screen shutting off with recoil. Do you have any complaints?
I got 1 coming. It’s illegal in Oklahoma to hunt with 1. But I saw a ufo over my house. And actually filmed 1000’s. Yes the icon is one I filmed. Armasight Zeus. Can’t wait to get my Thor 4. My son in law lives in dickens Texas josh Allan
I can tell you like the video and picture capabilities of this scope. And that’s cool. But I’m struggling with paying the high price for these bells and whistles. I just need to see at night through a scope for 1/3 of the price...
I have a thor 4 640. Use it nightly. Major audio lag when I video. Last night I had a 2 minute long video due to tons of hogs and the audio was literally 30 seconds behind. Other Thor 4s I've owned does the same thing. FW 430. SanDisc class 10 SD card.
My kids did that and she says to restart by holding power button for 15 seconds. Only one of hers does that she claims the samsung cards work better. Just passing what she claims
I noticed your red dot sight using some kind of 45 degree offset. Could you share your offset sight details? I am having a hard time finding a mount that works with my ATN scope mounts.
You mentioned you switching to the auto nuc function. On mine I have to cover the lense to prevent ghosting due to no automatic shutter. My 640 has shutter do you still cover the lense or am I missing something. The only reason I leave mine in manual is to prevent missed shot opportunities due to unwanted nuc ghosting
Night Shift I never cover the lens during use. I had the same fear as you originally regarding the auto NUC feature, but the scope gives you warning and the function only lasts a brief second.
4MR Ranch thank you. I have just learned that my 384 4.5-18 has been broke since the factory. Auto nuc has NEVER worked and I’ve always had to use my hand. Now to decide on weather or not to send back my favorite scope (same as my 640 actually) and take the chance on them messing up something else
I'm from Washington state and I lived in Texas for a year when the weather gets down to the 60s they start putting on heavy clothes on , it crazy , I'd be looking at them funny and they'd be looking at me funny and when it snowed you'd think the world was shutting down with how many people call our for work, tshirts and shorts year round for me
BLACKRIFLE COYOTE it’s been great. I love my 762 Ti QD. Comfortable on both 30 cal and 22 cal rifles. Easy to pop on and off too, and since it’s titanium it really doesn’t add that noticeable of weight on the end of the rifle.
oldfarmer yes and I have done so when I forgot my SD card. That said, the streaming to my phone because glitchy which isn’t really fair to assume it’s the scope, it could have just as easily been my phone.
@@4MRRanch The latest FW update addressed and fixed it! Unfortunately it lasted for 3 videos on my scope and it is now back to being not synced. My suggestion, deal with it like ATN told me!
hmm,so im thinking of buying a thermal scope soon..do you think i could use this model in open woods in the fall and winter too detect large animals over 200 yards away??
You will be able to detect them. Identifying them might be an issue. Deer or similar necked animals you can usually tell when they pick their heads up. May want to go with one with a base power a little stronger. None of my scopes are above 2 base but I hunt within about a 100 yards.
@@RichardBrianFaithWalkers ATN Optics Plant Night Vision Guys The entry level starts about $900 refurbished and runs up to $7000 I say save up and enter with the 2k THor 4. Great Starter and and you can do video.
Mike Marks I have a light on my rifle to be used as a light source for if I want to be able to use a red dot mounted at 45 degrees for up close follow up shots. No light is ever needed day or night for this to work. For more details on this check out my night vision vs thermal comparison video
Is there anything that you don’t like about the scope or needs improvement? I’m looking into getting one for my 6.5 Grendel and wonder if this would be a good match. I’ve watched two of your videos so far and want to see more on this scope so I’ve subscribed to you channel.
I cant seem to get mine focused in daylight during max optical zoom. I've performed the pixel correction and the NUC several times. Normal without zoom is crystal clear, but a soon as I zoom in its pixelated and blurry. I've manual adjusted the focus and the software is the latest version. I have the 1.25 zoom version
WILLIAM DWAYNE it becomes pixelated because it uses a digital zoom. If you have the 1.25x power, you have a fairly low base magnification, so you will not have a clear image when zoomed in. This is true for most all thermal scopes out there because they use a digital zoom and not an optical zoom like a standard scope. If you get a thermal with the higher 640 sensor it will retain a little more resolution when zooming, but you will pay for the added technology.
I’ve been thinking of getting this for my 6.5 creedmoor. Based on your comment, is this scope operable in daylight? That’s the only reason I’ve held back. I currently have a vortex on it. I was thinking of getting green lights around the feeder if I stick with the vortex. If the thermal is also operable during the day it would be great!!!
I see two different ATN Thor 4’s in the 384 but there is about a $2000 difference. What is wrong here? Is there a smart and non smart version? I’m looking for the 1,25-5 or whatever as I never get shots past 100 yards Thanks
Yo estoy teniendo muchos problemas con esta marca tuve el xshigt 2 y me salió malísimo se me descentrada y me lo cambiaron por el 4k y se me quedaba la imagen congelada y llevo mes y medio esperando contestación así que hay lo dejo.
travel time to range 55 minutes Sighted in at 36 yards fuzzy at any range regardless of focus Later that night it froze up. ATN instructed to turn back on and wait (18 hours) for the battery to run down. Turned back on reloaded download. Ran back out to range to sight in and again it froze up did it 5 times. Sent it back got my money back. You would think after 2 years they would've fixed the problem......
Blake Osgood it becomes more pixelized as it is partially a digital zoom. That said it will still help you to fine tune you’re shot placement even with some lost clarity.
I am tempted to buy one but they have too many negative reviews, like 15-20% and they all complain about crappy customer service so.......I can't "pull the trigger" on one.
Join some of the ATN Facebook pages. There’s a majority of positive experiences being shared there, with troubleshooting negative experiences. I have seen several people who did have issues saying they had quick turn around on their optics. I believe in their products enough to now have invested my own money in their optics.
ATN Thor 4 what??? If we dont know what you have we dont know what your talking about. From the front lens it looks like a high mag, but wtf is on the inside???
Unable to link my scope to a handheld device. It's been an issue from day one. My scope freezes often. If you want to hunt beyond 200 yards buy a 5000 dollar scope and pray. In summary, buy the cheapest thermal they have. The bells and whistles wont work most of the time. If you must have video to show your buddies do so. It works is all I can say. Not the greatest thing since the invention of prostitution though.
Oh, this is the same channel that did the bogus Thermion/Thor comparison. Now I get it... "Get your own ThOR 4 on Amazon... As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases."

I always leave my gun and scope in ambient temperature just prior to hunting so that the scope doesn’t fog up
That's certainly what we did for many of our rifles & scopes, regardless of thermals or not. It's just important to do a function check on the weapon in the ambient conditions, just SOP.

I'm from Washington state and I lived in Texas for a year when the weather gets down to the 60s they start putting on heavy clothes on , it crazy , I'd be looking at them funny and they'd be looking at me funny and when it snowed you'd think the world was shutting down with how many people call our for work, tshirts and shorts year round for me
What are you talking about ffs
I bought me one of them Sig suppressors like that is that a pretty good one I haven't got my okay to get it yet or bring it home
BLACKRIFLE COYOTE it’s been great. I love my 762 Ti QD. Comfortable on both 30 cal and 22 cal rifles. Easy to pop on and off too, and since it’s titanium it really doesn’t add that noticeable of weight on the end of the rifle.
my photos turn out really dark! Do yours appear as they do in the view finder when you download them to the computer
Have one of these and resolution no where this good... something has to be messed up on my settings or it is bad . Been totally disappointed..
Definitely play with your contrast and sensitivity settings. Always be sure to regularly update your firmware as well.
What atn app did you use?
The obsidian 4 app
Can you record on the phone from the app?
oldfarmer yes and I have done so when I forgot my SD card. That said, the streaming to my phone because glitchy which isn’t really fair to assume it’s the scope, it could have just as easily been my phone.
I’m having an audio to video sync issue any suggestions?
Boar Da Patrol I believe there is an additional update patching that issue
@@4MRRanch The latest FW update addressed and fixed it! Unfortunately it lasted for 3 videos on my scope and it is now back to being not synced. My suggestion, deal with it like ATN told me!
There is any distribution shop in Poland? Or only Thermion for hunters???
Will this get more abused on a .308?
Axwack my question as well
it is rated up to 416 Remington and 375 HH... it will have no issues with your 308
hmm,so im thinking of buying a thermal scope soon..do you think i could use this model in open woods in the fall and winter too detect large animals over 200 yards away??
You will be able to detect them. Identifying them might be an issue. Deer or similar necked animals you can usually tell when they pick their heads up. May want to go with one with a base power a little stronger. None of my scopes are above 2 base but I hunt within about a 100 yards.
Does muzzle flash affect this scope at all?
Not that I have noticed
Is ATN one of the companies the fed gub'ment is asking for user data???
I've never heard they approached ATN or Trijicon
Where did you purchase your THOR 4 from?
Cost?
@@RichardBrianFaithWalkers
ATN
Optics Plant
Night Vision Guys
The entry level starts about $900 refurbished and runs up to $7000
I say save up and enter with the 2k THor 4. Great Starter and and you can do video.
Like your videos but on this one the Closed Captioning wasn't enabled.
Can u use that in the dark night? and if no battery, can we still use it?
No needs power or its a paperweight
What lens do you have?
I wouldn’t have that scope on anything but a 308. A piston one with a heavy ass buffer to eliminate a lot of recoil.
Do you run a light on it for night time ? And do you have to run a light on it for it to work at night
Mike Marks I have a light on my rifle to be used as a light source for if I want to be able to use a red dot mounted at 45 degrees for up close follow up shots. No light is ever needed day or night for this to work. For more details on this check out my night vision vs thermal comparison video
Do you have to zero every time you turn it on?
no, the zero remains stored, even if the optic dies.
Is there anything that you don’t like about the scope or needs improvement? I’m looking into getting one for my 6.5 Grendel and wonder if this would be a good match. I’ve watched two of your videos so far and want to see more on this scope so I’ve subscribed to you channel.
I own 2 only because I bought 2 at the same time! If you can't afford anything more than ATN then you'll be more accepting of the many flaws!
@@MrGS53 The many freeze ups, 2"moa adjustment, charging issues, wifi doesn't stay connected, obsidian 4 app is useless. Other than that usable scope!
The lenses are fogged up what you need to do is leave it outside 5 or 10 minutes to un fog
You’re probably spot on
I cant seem to get mine focused in daylight during max optical zoom.
What calibur are you using?
Michael Moser currently on a 5.56 AR platform.
Looking at the wraith..
I have one and I recommend it I'm selling it and upgrading but it's the best starter
I see two different ATN Thor 4’s in the 384 but there is about a $2000 difference. What is wrong here? Is there a smart and non smart version? I’m looking for the 1,25-5 or whatever as I never get shots past 100 yards
Thanks
What version is this? 4.5-18x?
SunnyFly100 yes that’s correct, on a 384 sensor
A lot of hunters complain about atn's reliability
Yo estoy teniendo muchos problemas con esta marca tuve el xshigt 2 y me salió malísimo se me descentrada y me lo cambiaron por el 4k y se me quedaba la imagen congelada y llevo mes y medio esperando contestación así que hay lo dejo.
travel time to range 55 minutes
Sighted in at 36 yards fuzzy at any range regardless of focus
Later that night it froze up. ATN instructed to turn back on and wait (18 hours) for the battery to run down. Turned back on reloaded download.
Ran back out to range to sight in and again it froze up did it 5 times. Sent it back got my money back. You would think after 2 years they would've fixed the problem......
When you zoom to full power; is the image still clear?
Blake Osgood it becomes more pixelized as it is partially a digital zoom. That said it will still help you to fine tune you’re shot placement even with some lost clarity.
No not at all...the furthur you zoom out the clarity gets worse
Not a good thermal optic for a higher cal .
Got a brand new one, camera doesn't work, focus is not great over a hundred yards.
I assume you attempted to change the focus? This has to be done manually by rotating the objective lens.
Note: don’t use auto when you are fighting Russians at night. Drones will see your IR flash
👍
You and your fiance were walking around with thermal, eating acorns ?
Looking for hogs!
Oh, this is the same channel that did the bogus Thermion/Thor comparison. Now I get it... "Get your own ThOR 4 on Amazon... As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases."
JustHuntvids I had the same link available for the Thermion.
JustHuntvids hey if you like the Pulsar great, if 4MR ranch or anyone else for that matter like the ATN that's OK, don't get on here and act like a dick!
"I'm a dumbass so I shall comment"
Justhuntvids
Have you tried the ATN? I'm interested in getting one. Can you give specific problems you've personally experienced with it? Thanks
I really really like big fat girls and I thought I heard you say something about it helping you find pigs so my question is will it help me find a date? 😜
POS DON"T BUY!
