  • If you press and hold the trip button when you turn the ignition key to second position it should activate the test menu and there should show the fault codes as well on some models

Hey i have a 2003 jaguar x-type 2.5l and when i hit high RPM’s in park or driving the car goes into transmission failure and gets stuck in what i assume is 4th gear until i turn off and back on any ideas?

Hi, sorry for the late reply. It's been a while since I worked on the jaguar in the video and I don't remember exactly what problems that model had with the box. It could be due to many things and it's hard to tell just based on this information. In this case, the condition of the box is important, has the oil been changed, if it was changed when was the last time. Is there enough oil, there may be leaks or other mechanical damage. If there is an error code, it is good to check which code it is and what it refers to. I think in the description under my video there was an explanation of how to run self-diagnostics on this model. There may be a problem with one of the solenoid valves in the box, but this is a rather serious problem that I don't want to comment on right now. But the first thing I thought was that there might be a bad communication between the shifter and the gearbox. I took some time to research this issue because I remember this jaguar having similar problems. It turns out that in many cases the shifter mechanism is damaged and gives wrong signals. Another common problem is a communication cable that gets damaged. In many cases there is a problem with the TCM (transmission control unit) that gets damaged as a result of getting wet. I think it must be one of these three potential problems. I will put a quote from a forum on the topic and a link to a video, you may find your solution in the comments. I hope this helps you. Read the answer from the quote, I think it's right on the subject!

It went into reverse but hesitated when I put it into drive. My check engine light came on and we took the car to get it checked out. Autozone hooked the computer up and the only code it got was P0300 which I am told is random cylinders misfire. The car gave us no trouble until around March when it completely stopped working. We realized that the dealer had put in a battery for a Kia and that it wasn't giving out enough charge to keep the car running. In order to start the car we were having to jump start it. We looked up the proper battery and replaced it and had no further problems. Then a few weeks ago after an oil change and car wash the "Gearbox fault/Cruise control not available" message popped up. We had the transmission fluid checked and were told that it was fine. Again the only code the mechanic found was the P0300 which he cleared for us. We got in the car today and the same Gearbox fault/no cruise control available message again came up. It was raining outside so we decided to take the car home. Any suggestions what it could be? I really hope it isn't the transmission because if it is we are probably going to get rid of it seeing how it would cost more to fix than we bought her for.
Easy fix probably, if you do a search for my posts you'll see I have had EXTENSIVE related issues although mine has never read cruise controle, just straight gearbox fault at which point it goes into limp mode (4th gear only).
Here's all you need to do. Probably getting watter into the TCM which is located on the drivers side beside your left foot inside. You have to take off a ton of crap then you'll see it. Rectangular 8"X4-5"X maybe 1" thick with a wire harness and 3" long plug going in the top of it.
Unplug the TCM and pull it out, check for corrosion on the contact point on both the plug and and the TCM itself. Clean it all and plug it back in and disconnect the battery (before you start is a better idea) to clear the codes.
Now the deal is to find out how the water is getting in. Still can't trace mine but when it happens again I'm taking a sandwich bag, cutting off the bottom to create a plastic sleeve and putting it over the TCM and taping the snot out of the wires above slow the water will go over the plug instead of into it.

      Hi, sorry for the delay
      Reset Service Indicator. Service Instruction:
      1. Insert key into ignition barrel.
      2. Press and hold the Reset switch (located on the Trip Computer Switch pack).
      3. NOTE: The reset switch has to be released immediately after the ignition is switched 'ON'. This is critical to enable the rest of the procedure.
Turn the key to Ignition position II and at the point of entering Ignition position II (i.e. when a click is heard), instantaneously release the Reset switch.
      4. Wait one second.
      5. Press and hold the Trip switch (located on the end of the left-hand side stalk).
      6. Wait one second.
      7. Press and hold the Reset switch (whilst still holding the Trip switch).
      8. The cluster should display (within three seconds) the warning message 'RESETTING SERVICE MODE'.
      9. Keep both buttons pressed until the warning message changes to 'SERVICE MODE RESET' (after ten seconds).
      10. Once the message is displayed the buttons may be released sequence is now complete.
      11. If a Service Required message was displayed prior to the reset sequence, cycle the ignition to 'Off' and then back to Ignition position II and check that the message is no longer displayed.
You may need to repeat a number of times, it needs to be VERY accurate.
      And the short version :
How To Reset Jaguar X-Type Oil Service Light for years 2006 through 2010:
      * To reset the service interval indicator, the following steps must be carried out within 3 seconds of each other
      1. With the vehicle in OFF position press and hold the CLEAR/RESET button and turn the vehicle to ON position (for push to start, press the start button with foot off of brake)
      2. Release the CLEAR/RESET button, then press and hold the TRIP button
      3. While holding the TRIP button, press and hold the CLEAR/RESET button again
      4. Continue holding both buttons for 10 seconds
      5. When the process is successful, the message center will display “RESETTING SERVICE” and then display “SERVICE RESET”
      6. Release both buttons, turn the vehicle to OFF position, and back on to confirm reset successful.
      Good luck !

But this is only for calls, not for music, right?

If I understand your question right you are referring to the device that I am using this device is used to read and clear stored fault codes off the ECU of the car. It does not play music nor can be used for making calls.

Almost the main difference is the 4x4 on the x-type. And some different parts and the Jaguar emblems here and there...
