    At 1:01:20, Sean describes the idea of the Sylladex in Homestuck. The idea Sean describes is wider, but the thought's there - you've got a theme to your inventory system, and that changes the way you interact with the world. To be fair, the Sylladex is a riff on how games goof with inventories, but it would be a hoot to play.

    Bigscreen Beta is legitimately the only reason I actually want VR atm, it has amazing potential, once vr's resolution stops being garbage (check it out on steam)
    You can have ALL the monitors, and virtual lan parties, and custom environments and everything. It shows where I think the true potential of VR lies, not with VR games, but Virtual Monitors in custom environments and true shared virtual spaces. instead of needing space for 3 or 6 monitors each running $500+, you just dump that money into a VR headset and get a better, more immersive, and custom experience

    I like Mostly Talking because the only reason I enjoy Mostly Walking is because of the banter and dynamic between the three of you. More of that is just more of the good stuff, so count me in. Games can be a fun pivot point but they don't need to be there for this to be entertaining for me, I wouldn't mind a bi-weekly or a monthly Mostly Talking episode to catch up on things or just shoot the skit.

      You can't just have people talk to eachother and have it be interesting for an hour and a half all the time, the only reason this is possible is because they haven't seen eachother in ages... the game is to have something to talk about

    In philosophy there is an idea that Communication is a language game. I suppose possible to develop syntax is constraints and understanding the end goal or win condition. (i think it was Wittgenstein). So if successfully communicating an intent is a game anything is

    a story with a twist near the end must still make sense without the twist ever happening.
    otherwise the whole story is just arbitiary nonsense. i call the process of writing a nonsnesical story with a twist thaat tries to make sense of the story, but surely just can fail to make any sense [Vanilla Sky]ing. just do not do that!
    de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla_Sky
    the "it was all posibly just a dream" ending is fine, but the dream must be consistent without that reveal. consistency is the difference bwtween the pathethic crap that is [vanilla sky] [matrix reloaded], and the rather good and more consisten fictions of [matrix 1] [eternal sunshine of a spotless mind] [inception], ans i dont know how, but Shamalamadingong, who generally utterly fails in consistency and twist endings, managed to make a more consistent movie with a twist with [the village] and [the sixth sense], though all his other failures clearly show that these where only accidentally getting things right.

    Sean B. : "game is a meaningless term, not properly defined" -> you could check the French researchs about the notion of "ludic contract", it may interest you and your position may evolve. Moreover, the fact you say that "everything is a game" shows, indeed, that this term is not defined for you. But the term has been properly defined in research fields outside of USA (by French pedagogy and by French philosophy, for what I know).

      The dude got a university job teaching people how to make shovelware crap that nobody wants to play.
      Nobody should take his opinion of what is or what isn't a game seriously lol...

    • @chrisc7265
      @chrisc7265 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      no matter what you study, universities like to stress the idea that nothing has inherent meaning (besides STEM fields where it's a functional impediment). If you study music, you will learn that notes are arbitrary. If you study sociology, you will learn that race 'doesn't exist'.
      For example, I haven't read the definition of 'game' you mentioned, but if brought up Sean B would likely mention some corner case of something we consider a game that doesn't line up with the definition, and use that as evidence that there is in fact no meaning to the concept, 'game'.
      There is truth to this approach, but it quickly becomes a dead end road if you treat it as the only truth that matters. Sean P actually swooped in and saved the day rather eloquently. Although it can be very difficult to put a definition of 'game' in writing, there is undoubtedly a functional definition of 'game' in our brains --- it's not strictly logical, part of the definition is emotional, it's hugely complex and would probably best be modeled with a network of weights rather than strict definitions --- but the definition is there, and a real thing, such that if you were to take a person and show them a series of things, they could consistently label the things 'game' or 'non-game', with complete accuracy, based on whatever complex mix of consciousness and biology is informing them.

    Your description of what makes Dark Souls good, sounds a lot like The Witcher. You should give it another go, get over that hump. That was created from a single writer's vision as well.
