About JamesandKarla:
Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & beyond and capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. So, Karla. The book is called 'Dock Boss'. Forgot the authors name. Easily available.
My grandfather's brother was Mickey Kane. He grew up on Horatio and later Little West 12th. His crew were called The Arsenal Gang. Primarily bank robbers. They predated the Westies. I know he knew Mickey Spillane and he might have known Owney Madden.
His story is detailed in the book and his mugshot is even in it.
How's this for crazy:
So, my mother lends me the book. I'm laying in bed reading it. I lived on 110th street at the time. I get to the part where my granduncle is finally caught by the FBI at his hideout. The author gave the building address of the apartment he was caught in.
Where was he caught?
In the building directly across the street from my building. I looked out of my window at the very building!!!!
I'll never forget that moment. It was so bizarre.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll love the book. Any New York history lover would.
And congratulations again with your book.

Edit. I know your Dad was a longshoreman so this is a must read for you because the book is about crime on the Westside docks.
