Had one for over five years....Great gennie.....worked flawlessly for the whole time. My best friend "inherited" it when we moved up to a built in on the new RV. Had a problem with our new Onan....it would run then shut off....wouldn't restart for a few hours. Under warranty the dealer was gonna remove it from the RV.....found that the ground cable had been overtightened and broke the bolt off in the hole. Drilled out the broken end, put a new ground bolt in and it has worked great ever since. Good luck with the new unit. Thanks for sharing

Id look at a sliding rack for the generator bay if you do replace the Onan with the Champion. Slide it out to turn gas on, refuel it etc etc. Make your life easier if your going through the trouble of replacing it

    • @dutchstarshawn9987

It would be worth every penny it costs to add a sliding tray for the generator bay.

His RV I'm pretty sure doesn't have the capability for the sliding rack, looks like it can only come out of the bottom. Just think his RV can take a dump and the crappy Onan can get flushed out.

Suggestion Eric, if you 86 the Onan in favor for the new one, regardless of if you install it or not, set up the RV fuel line with a dispensing tap and an electric fuel pump. That way you can use the RV's fuel tank as your own personal gas station for the bike/ generator, and not need to carry a gas can with you at all.
    THOUGHTS????

Been following you for a while now. I had the exact same issue with my Onan in my Winnebago. The configuration in that did not have an auto transfer switch. Instead, I had to manually plug my RV into the generator outlet, which ended up being my problem. Really weird because I never had an issue with that configuration until one day I did. Put in an RV auto transfer switch and all of my problems went away. It was quite incredible. Good luck to you Sir. Hopefully this new generator works out for you, but if you don’t have an auto transfer switch on board, it may be worth considering.

Long time viewer, first time to comment. And when I say long time I've been watching you since you and Jax were living in a van down by the river..... Haha
Boy I was shaking my head when I saw your thumbnail. Thinking to myself no way, Eric is not going to be that guy. Those construction generators just make everyone that boondocks and love to boondock shake their head. I'm glad that's not the case I'm also glad that you've shown this generator because I'm looking to upgrade from my 3400 w champion inverter generator. Having that remote is so convenient when it's cold outside in the morning and you don't want to go out and hit that start button and pull that cord. It really sucks having power issues on the road and because of you and your channel I put in a killer solar power system for my needs a year ago and this last year I couldn't do anything but smile. I along with my service dog live in the National Forest throughout the West 8 months of the year and come to my home which is also my base camp The other 4 months for winter just to do repairs and relax off the road a little while. My house is also my nest egg, that's a great benefit of being a homeowner is every dollar you put in it is a dollar you'll get back if the housing market stays strong. I think you're going to love the champion I have run them for the last 5 years and have occasionally had to clean the carburetor bowl when staying in Utah and Arizona because of the dust. But that's it other than that they are bulletproof. Good luck and happy portable power for you and Jax. Last thing have you thought about putting in a micro air soft starter for your air conditioner. It's a great upgrade and doesn't slam your power system all at once. It's a game changer when you are under a lot of load.

Champion is a wise choice. I’ve had a construction one for nearly 20 years..still runs great , starts right up no matter how long it’s been sitting. I do regular maintenance and use no oxygen fuel.
Three years ago we bought a 3500/2800 inverter type with remote start/stop for the rv...love it. Added a easy start unit to the 15000 AC and it runs it great. Champion also has a great customer service and tech support unit as well.

Hey Eric don’t beat Urself up over the Onan Genertor!!! I have a Trucking Company I have over a hundred Semi Trucks 🚛 & probably 140 different configurations of Trailers we’ll one of my Trailers has a small Engine that u start to unhook & hook the trailer to the tongue! Well my Koehler engine worked great for several years until just about the time the warranty ran out now just a point I only ran the small engine just long enough to unhook the trailer pull out of the way load up my load then back semi up & hook the trailer back to the Semi so only :20-:30 minutes @ a time!!! Well my Koehler engine started doing the same thing as urs did! We took it several times to get worked on well $1,800 later it was still doing the same thing so I put a wet line system on a truck & dedicated one Semi Truck to run that trailer! Point is theirs something wrong with them engines!

True, but they are still not as quiet as a Honda or Yamaha quiet series generator. Every 3dB is twice the sound energy. So 58dB Honda vs. a 61dB Champion. Twice as loud. No ding against Champion, as I have one of those too. To get that last 3dB, the generator needs an enclosure.

Eric. I have been following your adventure with you generator. We have a Thor ACE and had a similar problem where generator would run about 20 minutes and die. To keep this short, it turned out to not be the generator but the load from the AC. Replacing the AC unit fixed the problem. I don't know if you tried to run the generator with no load but if not may be something you may want to try. If that works then you have a load issue. Something is putting a demand on the system the generator cannot handle and shuts down as designed.
    Good luck.

Hi Eric, if it’s not to late, and before you tear out your Onan generator. Hear me out, hopefully someone mentioned this. If you haven’t had the sending unit in your fuel tank checked you might want to at least try it. Most are POS’s, they are made foremost pick up the gas from your Tank, and then tell you how much gas/fuel you have. With RVs it does a double duty of telling your generator to shut-Off if you are below 1/4 tank. Some are a combo unit and others mostly older RV’s have two sending units in tank. If for some reason the generator part isn’t sending the correct information to your gen shut off. Well you guessed it your generator stops. If none of your techs haven’t though of this. It’s time to kick someone in the ass. Hopefully your rv has a sending unit access spot in the floor above fuel tank or you would have to drop the tank. I’m just an guy like yourself plugging away and there is a chance I have no idea what I’m talking about. But I had similar problems on a truck and a car I’ve owned in the past. Was told the fuel injection was broken and needed rebuild and the carb was toast. Fortunately I took them both to a mechanic friend that told me both were fine the crap plastic sending units both failed. Dude I hope this helps, if not you maybe someone else. Give Jax a pet for me. Stay safe and do what you need to do to keep sane.

Nice backup generator. You should break in the generator with conventional oil for the first 100hrs of operation. It helps for wear to break in. Then switch to synthetic.

  • @dandial3733
    @dandial3733 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I found out years ago, use the highest octane gas you can get in these small generators. Those small fuel systems will glaze up pretty quickly if you don't. Additionally, I always put Seafoam in the gas can to help keep everything nice and clean. As for oil, you might want to break the generator in with dino oil until you get a few hours on it. I bought a new Promaster and converted for camping. I wanted to go with Amzoil Full Synthetic right off the bat. I talked to a trusted mechanic and he said to wait until I have at least 5K miles on it. He said the synthetic oil is so slippery, the piston rings will never seat so you need a break in on dino oil.

Im not sure yet if this generator is still becoming your main setup. I dont have a class A like you, but i purchased an RV that i use for travel nursing and mine didnt come with generator setup new, because i was planning lots of solar. I use my vehicle as my backup generator on remote start. I have a 2016 Chevy Colorado 2.8L Duramax diesel, i installed a 2nd alternator on a bracket kit that im using a 220amp OEM alternator i pulled from a salvage yard off a Ford F250. This 2nd alternator is directly wired to an anderson plug mounted on both my front and rear bumpers, i plug my extension into the RV and anytime i need generator i remote start the truck and i have 220amps of power available and its unable to be stolen and driven in remote start mode. Typically it would shut off after 10 minutes, but i learned on my model truck if you put hair band around the button on the shifter, it for some reason keeps it from timing out, so i can run it all night or 5 minutes.. On the RV i have it wired into the solar battery system on a 12v to 48v charge controller, because my battery bank is 48v@400amp hours. I wired all my outlets so they are powered from the inverter system.

Talk about dark clouds, Eric you must have a big one following you. First opening scene in your video and rain is pouring down on your new car. I have one of those Sure Flow cans and the only problem that I have with it is that fuel keeps pouring out after you let go of the fill lever. You really have to anticipate how much will continue to flow after you let go. BTW, if your house batteries are low push your Aux start button to tie house and chassis batteries together.

it doesn't have electric start even though he says it does several times. he is thinking of a different model that costs about $150 more. guess he bought the wrong one.

Wonder if you can get some $ for that onan. Tough working with the older RVs at times but, you know how to make it right for yourself & get the rv you want.

Pretty sure you can change the carburetor and make that model run on propane. We have the Champion 3100 and really like it, have not used it that often and have not done the conversion I mentioned above but I plan too when we go more full time. Glad you finally got it. Merry Christmas, Enjoy the road and stay safe.

I’ve had issue this yr as well with our 5500 watt onan. It will sit and run perfect while sitting still but bouncing down the road it will die or trip one of the main breakers on the genset.. I’ve gotten several codes but none make sense but I have changed the oil level, fuel pump and so on. I’ve had work done on it under warranty at the Cummins onan service center in St. Louis off 270 and had good luck.
