    Hey Eric, I think even a better solution to the Loctite on the nut is: get another nut and tighten it up against the nut that’s there and that definitely will not let it move at all. Safe travels my friend.

    • @Flyingscottyman
      @Flyingscottyman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, then a line across both nuts and onto the bracket to show if it ever moves, with a marker.

    • @LeadfootOnline
      @LeadfootOnline 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A nylon locking nut would be a smart overkill here as well. Even double nylon as you suggest.

    • @Flyingscottyman
      @Flyingscottyman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Amazing Polly is on Bitchute whilst lock washers are great, a lock washer wont provide any advantage in this application as the offending nut isn't tightening down onto anything, it's simply holding the rod at a certain position in relation to the bracket (which cant be threaded) to keep tension on the spring.

    As a recently retired mechanic who has fixed many a repair from other shops,
    My #1 rule was, start from the beginning. Don't accept anyone else's diagnosis. It wasn't repaired. I had it.
    Of course my #2 rule was, TEST, don't guess. I am very happy for you, and congratulations, Kevin! Telephone repairs are the worst.

    Wow...just wow. Am so very very pleased to hear that Kevin and you finally got to the bottom of the generator issue. I too have an Onan generator. And I too had 'random' problems with it shutting off. My own issues were not the same as yours but rather a 'fuel quality' issue(to start with). I now only use 'premium top tier' gasoline in my RV and most of the problems have gone away. The lower quality gas was flooding the generator without detonation. The second problem, which I've only partially solved, is too much pressure of gasoline being pumped into the carburetor. I tightened down all of the adjustment screws to their tightest setting and it just barely works and keeps the generator from being flooded by too much fuel. Some people have suggested installing a fuel pressure regulator and I just might do that now that I am in my 'sticks and bricks' refuge.
    Thanks again for sharing your final solution to the generator saga.

    Awesome! i am glad you got the generator fixed! I cant believe I never thought about having you contact Kevin, or having him contact. He has an amazing wealth of knowledge of a lot of things RV related. I met Kevin several years ago when he was looking for an RV and was looking for suggestions on what to get. I told him what we have and why we liked it, and he went and bought one identical to ours. Since then they have stopped to visit us in Iowa an couple of times and we have discussed many things RV and some things not RV related. Again, glad Kevin was able to help.!

    How we all miss Jax.
    My RV gen stopped working one day, after just a few days of using it this summer.
    Now, I had changed the oil, put in a new air filter and plug. But why was it not starting?
    It sounded like a fuel pump issue, as I don’t think it was getting gas. I had checked my RV gas level several times. Including stating and running the RV.
    Well, after learning how to break apart every part of the gen (TH-cam), I found that the RV has gauge was stuck on 1/2 tank, but really had less than a 1/4 of a tank.
    It was that simple. OMG!!!

  • @smushegg
    @smushegg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm so happy you two could diagnose that. I will be searching for that frequency gadget.
    I have had issues with my 7000 onan. I replaced the fuel pump and later found the issue was really the house batteries were shot. My onan does run well when needed.
    And I am a huge fan of Fuel ox fuel treatment. It keeps all the gasoline motors running flawlessly. It works in diesel and is used in boats.

    Glad to hear you got it fixed. This is what I was saying, but I was saying it wrong. I said idling to fast, because I was saying it was overcharging. ( frequency). That’s what the two old guys explained it to me. Again glad it’s fixed

  • @SuperRobkar
    @SuperRobkar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Glad you solved the issue. I had the opposite problem, my frequency was at 50hz , thus the generator would start, then shut off within a minute or so. The kill a watt is by far one of the best and cheapest ways to trouble shoot a generator!

  • @ClarkAdventures
    @ClarkAdventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome work, Eric ! Congratulations ! I also had some issue with generator which appeared to be frequency related and I also solved it with kill-a-watt tool. Problem was that Cyberpower ST900U UPS does not charge from Champion Power Equipment 3500-Watt Dual Fuel Powered RV Ready Portable Generator. I checked frequency and it was 63.2 Hz. When I loaded generator with 700 watt space heater frequency dropped to 62.8 Hz and UPS start charging. All other appliances (fridge, lights, computer, laptop) work fine on both 63.2 and 62.8 Hz. Issue was only with UPS. P.S. I also have another UPS, little bit more expensive (Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD) and it doesn't charge from generator even when frequency is 61.9 Hz (with 1500 watt space heater).

    This is an important lesson to remember when tech people come to help (like the recent internet technician), and they insist on troubleshooting everything from the beginning even though you feel like all that other stuff was already checked.

  • @TonyBSyr
    @TonyBSyr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Another good reason for an inverter generator because they automatically change the speed for more load while on your set, the controls have to keep the speed constant to keep the frequency stable. Much information gained for everyone.

    Hi Eric! I'm pretty handy with a wrench and watch a lot of TH-cams, and I'll tell you, this is a useful piece of information that I haven't seen or heard anyone else talk about before. Like you said, most people go to the carb or fuel delivery system first, which is correct, but it just goes to show you that you should always check the simple stuff first. I've seem a lot of people throw away a perfectly good generator because they couldn't figure out the problem. Thanks for the tip and good on you for working through the problem!

    Glad you got it fixed, like I've said, these are solid units and not very complex at all.. if i ever have issues with mine, i have another thing to check for 🤙.. send the champion back and get a refund man.. no point carrying the extra weight...

    I have an Onan 7000, which would randomly shut off after anywhere between 20 and 60 minutes, everything has been changed by Cummins. I moved that spring forward and checked the Hz at the plugs and I'm at about 63.5, should I continue to adjust it until I get to 60? So far it seems to be running better

    Makes perfect sense. One thing to note now that I seen your governor setup. Buy that spring and have an extra hanging out. If the spring breaks, it won't run right.

    The nut will never vibrate and get tighter. The clean threads you found was from the Onan shop adjusting it. When you loosened it back to the original spot from the factory. It lower the RPM back down.

    The key to me is flagstaff. The Onan is going to run different at altitude. So if it's getting adjusted up there, it's probably not going to run right off the mountain back at sea level. Onan generally has a manual high altitude adjuster on the carburetor

    I'm not having a problem as of now, but it gives me another avenue to look at if and when I do. Thanks

    Right on Eric, next thing to tackle is towing the little smart behind the RV, and then the ever-dreaded hydraulic levelling system! I bet it's also one of these repairs that has been done 90%, and the last 10% is a really simple thing, but very hard to figure out what it is. So I hope Santa brings you another expert on these systems, like Kevin is with the generators, that can walk you through getting your levelling jacks to work again!
