This put a huge smile on my face. This is the best post Dead I've ever heard. Truly amazing. Really tight and the band was on fire. I have new respect for John Mayer.
Jerry Garcia i like this show, which I've just started on, but the Communion show from a couple of months ago was and is the best post-Garcia GD material i can remember. If you haven't seen it check it out. the most pleasant P&F I saw was the very short run with Herring and Jeff Pevar which was what? the second or third tour? I like Warren fine. Warren and Herring was fantastic many nights.
Stu Allen was my roommate in college at St.Olaf in Northfield MN. Way to go Stu....well done friend. Now playing with Phil and John Mayer.... like it was written in your soul.
i find stu one of the greatest guitar players ive ever heard ,he really knows his sound , kind zero ego , awesome dude ! i think phil is kind of a dick to call his name whenever he is in a pinch at his fine club that i love , but never brings him to the east coast , actually capitol theater is all he ever does guess i cant blame him at 80 years old , but he must be insecure that stu isnt a big enough name as he seems to put together just plain silly line ups at some east coast gigs , personally id take stu over anybody alive right now to play lead dead guitar , big fan of anders too, course the jrad boys can play as can madson ,,,,guess im just pissed because now i live in philly after five years in marin and i dont get to here stu several times a week
John Mayer's guitar playing has been flying under the radar for years. Some may think he's an ass but the guy is one of the best blues guitarist around today.
+Stratisfied Flying under the radar? The guy must have a couple platinum albums under his belt, successful tours, and Clapton invites him to the Crossroads guitar festivals. I'd say he's pretty renowned.
When Eric clapton says John doesn't know how good he is, I would say that's not flying under the radar. Ever since Try! came out in like 2005 everyone knew right away.
He was new to the music at this point… Amazing to see how far he’s come since. No argument after 2021-22 tour that Johnny gets it, and is on the bus. It’s been sad to see so many heads (not ever sure I should call them that) react so negatively to Dead and Co. I’m a younger guy, but wasn’t the whole scene founded on community, compassion and acceptance?
I was at this show and it was truly amazing. We had no idea JM would be playing, nor did we know they would be doing the 5/8/77 show. One of the best post-Jerry shows I've ever seen.
HOLY SHIT!! This is absolutely insane! I hate to say it, but this almost sounds better than the original 5/8/77 show. (Well, tighter anyway) ;-) Phil is smiling ear to ear for almost the solid 3 hours. And John Mayer, wow!! He started off quiet and in the background, but by that solo in Morning Dew. Wow!!! What a show!!!
Erik Z I agree, and I think he'll take this experience, and inspiration into his song writing and live shows from now on. How could you not be effected by such a spiritual musical experience and not take some of it with you wherever you go.
Matt Mueller oh i know. he was fantastic! everyone was. but the looks on phil's face thru all of Mayer's solo there, ending at 1:14:30ish was just beautiful. can't wait to see the follow-up tonight!
What an amazing concert! One of the things I like about John Mayer is that he seems to like playing outside of his comfort zone. He looks determined to do right by the music and other players here, staying true to the spirit and the style of the Dead without upstaging the rest of the band. When you throw such an accomplished guitarist into this mix, it becomes clear that what Phil Lesh & Friends do is probably a lot harder than it looks!
+Bill Parmwell he has been a great guitarist, but he needs to record some good albums that are blues unlike his albums which are much pop influenced to be at SRV or Clapton's level
+Rishabh Gajra As I humbly agree with you, sir. I strongly dislike Mayer's pop stuff, but it got him to be a household name. Now he's playing with Dead members? Played with BB King, Clapton, Buddy Guy... I mean, I probably would of sold out a little just to get to do all that. Actually, I wouldn't I'm too stubborn. haha But, honestly what an honor! I agree, with Bill as well... A guitar players, guitar player. Much love!
The Row Jimmy (beginning at 1:07) is superb. Phil really digs JM's solos, which are made possible by the tremendous version of the body of the tune. Fun slide work by STU as well as the vocals with Ms. Ferber.
Just when I though Scott was just going to hang back and play Bobs parts, he tore off that Jack Straw solo. Fucking awesome. All 3 guitarists killed it in their own ways and Mayer's enthusiasm for these tunes is evident in his share of flame throwing. Dam.
wow... just starting into it... theres a lot of great musicians on that stage ! goood mix, separation, space... im gonna settle in have a sip have a smoke enjoy this historical reccord... thank you sooo much for posting.
This is really very special. Cannot wait to see what the future holds for John Mayer and the Grateful dead. It looks like a new beginning and Jerry is smiling above.
Loving the addition of John Mayer...for me, he's the best post-Jerry guitar player to fill those shoes. I mean wow, I am reinvigorated and back into listening to these guys again and it's all due to John. Must give props to Stu and Scott too. Scott has some amazing licks.
By the end of this show, during John's solo in Morning Dew, you can see in Phil's face that he knows the music is going to be ok. The torch being passed. So cool.
Stu was huge part of Terrapin.. last year at days between he had his band, then played with dso, finished the night with a 2hr avoustic solo set.. unteal

Loving the various incarnations of Phil & Friends. He knows how to lead a band & after a lifetime of the Dead he's not know as a 'real' bass player outside the Dead community.
I think Phil is thrilled to see gifted people playing the music he helped created and still making people happy. Was at Santa Cruz and going to dead an co. at STL
I'm streaming this at work, through not particularly good headphones, but I have to say - good job, Mr. soundman! Great balance, keyboards just right in the mix, three guitars not drowning out everything else, clear vocals, ... well done.
and here we are, three years later with JM killing it w the band, and really paying homage to the legacy of the Dead and jerry. i love the band right now, and am so grateful he came on board. pun intended :) oteil too!

Top quality stuff. Stick this one right alongside with the Phil and friends from 99 with Trey and Page. Good to see younger fellas with serious chops putting there own twists on the music . Phil with the look of a Cheshire cat all night
I'm starting to fall in love with the Dead now. Is it too late? Am I too young? 20 y.o. here. BTW, It's good to see John in a heartwarming and fascinating musical journey. I'm listening back to his early albums then now. Wow. His music defines him. It's like his brain and soul is projected to all of his songs and guitar playing. It's been a week since I started listening to the Dead. If there's any song that you would love to share to me to start-off please do. I currently like Cream Puff War. Please suggest. :) I'm going to keep these videos of them and share to my sons and daughters in the future. Where everything that they can see and hear makes sense. This kind of music must live a hundred-fold.
Hi All! I'm happy John got to take "back seat" & be "humble." No lead singing or hogging the stage or the solos! But he CAN play that geeetar!!! A great matchup, if I ever saw one! 3 great guitarslingers & Phil playing his kick ass bass lines!!
Very very solid show! Watched the whole think. Mayer was outstanding as lately I have come to expect nothing but pure class and and a natural ability to pay homage to those before him while weaving his own brand and interpretation of these old classics. Very well done guys. Great video!
Jerry was always going to have big shoes to fill, but John Mayer slips right into them nicely. Phil's expressions during Morning Dew and Fire on the Mountain, say it all.
This is fabulous. Mayer is on fire, the whole band is so tight. Gonna be hard to top this. Trey already one pair of big shoes to fill but now he has two. I don't doubt his abilities but damn, wishing they had picked Mayer at this point. This is a keeper
John told us in "In the Light" that he's tried everything in this life but love, true love. I knew since his live Gravity days this was his direction in life. I can't wait to see where he lands in 30 years. It's not his guitar skills that are amazing, it's his ability to learn, apply and appreciate. Our pasts are behind us, John belongs as a Headlight on this new North Bound Train.
Thanks again Samwise Gambee... this is GOLD...the best music ever! Looking forward to your upload of part 2! From the snippets I've seen this morning, John Mayer REALLY let loose last night (6/13)!
I love it... thank you for the share. Really great tunes, and really well done. And if you still hate on Mayer, then that is on you. He's the guitar player that guitar players want to play with. Whether the "super-fan" likes it or not because of personal hang-ups and low self-esteem.
There seems to be an uplifting chemistry going on here. Everyone has upped their game. Phil is playing some really tasty bass. Nothing like playing with great musicians.
This is a crisp and exciting re-enactment of classic Grateful Dead. I'm extremely pleased. The Other Ones did a comparable job. Notice how every Grateful Dead resurrection depends on two to three Garcia guitarists? The job is overwhelming. From the beginning, the Dead realized you need two drummers. Without Garcia, it becomes clear you also need two lead guitarists.
What the hell?!?!? My eyes, my ears, my soul hurts after seeing this version of Brown-Eyed Women at 54:00...John Mayer has surpassed most in playing the best dead post-jerry. Good lawd. It feels good.
Saw Stu and Friends do Europe '72 at TxR in January of this year. Phil has really done an excellent job providing reasonable, tasteful access to quality Dead music at TxR. I know most are here to see John Mayer, but if you see Stu is playing anywhere...go see. He's excellent!
Does this sound better than 5/8/77? Absolutely. Terrapin XRoads is a pristine sound environment. Barton Hall was a horrible barn that I had to endure for four years in the seventies. The Dead show was the last time I was there.
Underrated JM solos not mentioned in the comments in the 26 minute Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain from 1:32:26 - 1:58:00 JM's solos at 1:37:32 and 1:54:15 Row Jimmy around 1:12 is good stuff as well. He does a nice job of blending his own style with Jerry licks. He picked his spots well and didn't over power the show.
This is really nice. I felt like these guys were channeling Jerry in a few spots. I am sure Phil hears it too. I guess they all do but Phil especially is holding space for this. Thank you for sharing!

I will never ever ever listen to anyone who shit talks John Mayer, that man plays with so much soul and emotion. The solo at 1:55:00 just shows how much he loves to play and how technically gifted he is. His flow and timing with the rest of the band is unparalleled.
A few years ago I would have laughed so hard thinking JM would lead guitar for the Dead. Once I saw him with Weir on The Late Show one evening, my mind was blown. This is a great show. 1:36:00 and 2:10:00 are great examples of JM's skills. I truly enjoyed this show, regardless of the faces he made! :P
Music in the Bay Area tends to make that happen a lot. Missed this one, too. Santana was at Terrapin yesterday but elected not to sit in with Midnight North.
Cannot wait for these Dead & company shows. This show alone shows John is the best fit out of anybody. No disrespect against Trey, John K or Warren. But John Mayer is the superior singer and really fits jerry's blues the best out of anyone well since Jerry. These shows this fall are going to be magical friends cannot wait. Cya in Columbus friday the 13th of november.
+Andrew Price couldn't agree more man. Didn't see Fare the Well live, but I listened to all the legs. Don't get me wrong, they were great shows! But seeing this now, holy shit.. I'm so glad I saved my money for Dead & co. I think youre right about the style of playing of Jerry and being an overall better singer, but what I think is the kicker is the energy. Watching John, you can tell he is putting his all into it. These shows that he is one: willing to learn it all, and two: that he is way more than capable of learning it. The energy is amazing, the way it used to be.
I circle back having revisited this show on the day Phil shuffled from this mortal coil and I can say in hindsight that nobody since Jerry has done the kind of work that Mayer has done to honor the spirit and technicality of this music post Jerry more than Mayer has. Sleep in the stars Phil, rest easy.
Definitely as good as anything I've heard post-Jerry. Great playing, wonderful signing, great set list. Phil-thank you for bringing such amazing friends together. Row Jimmy was amazing. Plus memorable announcements recreated by STU!!
Used to love that, but the stadium was doing vibrating 😀😀😀 Awesome times INDEED !!! I actually have a piece of JFK stadium from the last show there , Phil literally was tearing that old building Down !!
This put a huge smile on my face. This is the best post Dead I've ever heard. Truly amazing. Really tight and the band was on fire. I have new respect for John Mayer.
Jerry Garcia i have a new found respect for john mayer too
Jerry Garcia the April 1999 Phil and Phriends shows are still in my opinion the BEST GD COVER BAND experience since Garcia's death in 1995
mike hunt calm down, you don't have to fiendishly capslock GD COVER BAND hahaha.
Jerry Garcia Also nned to say it oftener: I love Scott Guberman, such a treasure stolen form New England and brought to California.
Stu Allen was my roommate in college at St.Olaf in Northfield MN. Way to go Stu....well done friend. Now playing with Phil and John Mayer.... like it was written in your soul.
Stu Allen knows...hella strong player in The bay and beyond

the smile on Phil's face during Mayer's solo on Row Jimmy at about 1:14:30 says it all.
Bryan Adeline Scott Metzger is the guitar player on the right.

A SMART THOUGHTFUL COMMENT! we love to see it
Scott Metzger's solo during Jack Straw is awesome. it starts around 31:04

Great musicians all on stage. So great to John killing it in his element & always expanding as an artist. I've never heard him play like this @58:40!

This is Pure Gold right here!!
I’ve never seen this before thank u very muchly ❤️🌹☮️❤️🔥☄️💥😱
I love it... thank you for the share. Really great tunes, and really well done. And if you still hate on Mayer, then that is on you. He's the guitar player that guitar players want to play with. Whether the "super-fan" likes it or not because of personal hang-ups and low self-esteem.
this is absolutely outstanding..
Excellent guitar on Dancin! What a great show!
What the hell?!?!? My eyes, my ears, my soul hurts after seeing this version of Brown-Eyed Women at 54:00...John Mayer has surpassed most in playing the best dead post-jerry. Good lawd. It feels good.
2:14:25 - 40. Hahah, the left drummer gets so into John's solo he forgets the verse begins.
glad to see younger musicians getting into this music!@!
GRateFul for this dream of a collabo. Thanks for the upload!
wow I was just blown away by Mayer in Fire on the Mountain all teared up in a good way
+mike scarbery it starts at 1:54:19
This outstanding. Thank you for sharing. It's been my soundtrack all afternoon.
very cool, and very enjoyable.
Better? Definitely not
john mayer crushes the guitar...guys on another level
john mayer is the best replacement I have heard keep it up only gets better
Metzgers refreshing. Thankful he's gotten involved in all the post-Dead projects!
He's learning when to hold back. Its not his thing but when he nails it, he nails it.
This proves there is hope. Musicianship does matter!
Underrated JM solos not mentioned in the comments in the 26 minute Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain from 1:32:26 - 1:58:00
JM's solos at 1:37:32 and 1:54:15
Row Jimmy around 1:12 is good stuff as well.
Kick Ass Show!! Mayer can Jam for sure... its all tight, groovin and full of life

Matt Mueller thank you
This is just ........beautiful!
Haters gonna Hate, Mayer sounds GRATE!! Can't wait for the tour fellas!!
the breakdown in lazy lightning...
you can see JM was made for this shit...
sooo good.
great sound great video.
I will never ever ever listen to anyone who shit talks John Mayer, that man plays with so much soul and emotion. The solo at 1:55:00 just shows how much he loves to play and how technically gifted he is. His flow and timing with the rest of the band is unparalleled.
Gotta admit, I was more than skeptical. Mayer fits into the GD way of doing things like a hand in glove.
makes me happy to hear when i have a ticket to 11-14 nc show
Thank you for this 2 plus hours of entertainment. Very cool my man.
these guys killed it!
I would LOVE to know how I missed this show! Especially since I am a huge Mayer and GD fan and live 5 min away from this venue! Damn!
Music in the Bay Area tends to make that happen a lot. Missed this one, too. Santana was at Terrapin yesterday but elected not to sit in with Midnight North.
It was a spur of the moment tryout for John. Weir sent him to play with Phil. I don't think they announced publicly that he'd be there.
+Andrew Price I respectfully disagree.
Plus memorable announcements recreated by STU!!
you can see how much more his playing has gotten better ever since joining the dead
Also i love how Phil's bass vibrates the camera now and then
Used to love that, but the stadium was doing vibrating 😀😀😀 Awesome times INDEED !!! I actually have a piece of JFK stadium from the last show there , Phil literally was tearing that old building Down !!
Phil continues to search for that sound! Great to see Stu up there!
I know for a fact that Philly gets his flannel shirts from LLBean here in Maine ! ❤️🌹☮️😘😛😋🤩
Awesome show !!!!!
you ROCK!!! thanks for sharing
