@@Ottophil If Soldano offered a 1 or 5 watt tube version of the SLO I would buy it. There are 2 problems with the SLO 100 that preclude me from being in the market for one.

Yes, you can hear a difference, but honestly for over 3 grand less in price, that Mini SLO is an absolute steal. And I bet they’d sound even closer if you took the fx send from the Mini and put it through the fx return of the SLO-100, or any other tube amp so it’s getting some tube goodness instead of solid state power section to round out the sound a little bit. The slo100 at 1 on the master volume is mostly preamp distortion, very fizzy. You have to turn it up to 5 to get the magical sound. I have an original slo100 and with it at 5 you get the massive low end punch that you can’t get at the lower volumes. It’s tough find a venue to use it in, though. But if you’re lucky to get to play in a larger venue, it is glorious!

I’m sure somebody is going to think I’m satanic for saying this but I own a Fractal Axe FX III and there is absolutely no comparison.
To be fair, the Fractal is about half of the money and can do 1000 things pretty amazingly … The Soldano does half a dozen things and does them better than almost all the other amps so it’s not really fair.

@@indivisibleman I agree. I love my AXE-FX III Turbo and get so many amazing tones thru CLR frfrs but my SLO 100 thru a 4x12 with Scumbacks is my favorite amp and in a world of it’s own and the AXE version does not compare.

@@jimmccall8030 the key is to dial it on with your ears not your eyes. Aka don’t assume the exact same setting = the same sound. Your tube amp is more sensitive and changes over time - to things voltage change, caps aging and and tube age. You can get there but you have to listen first.
It can help to have a friend turning the knobs while you play and focus on the sounds.
I did this with a Marshall I own and got scary close to that amp.
Also have the sound level on both as close as you can get them. Fletcher-Munson is a thing.

Huge difference in sound, but as a back up amp it's perfect.
I mean the SLO mini doesn't sound bad, the SLO100 is just that much better. It has an airy sound and a texture that's unbeatable. But...it's also really expensive.

    • @PelleKuipers
      @PelleKuipers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@K2347 to each their own. I can hear a clarity of notes and a certain amount of air and texture that the SLO100 has that just doesn't exist in the SLO mini. One just sound 3d and the other one sounds flat.
With overdrive though they both have a nice sound, but quite different from each other.
And no, it's never 4K worth more. I own a Marshall JCM900 which I bought for about the same price as the SLO mini. It sounds great and doesn't leave me wanting for a SLO100.

It’s weird the micro sounds more open and the 100 sounds boxy

The 100 obviously has a bit more headroom and sounds more organic, but idk something about the solid state mini sounds tighter and punchier to me… I agree with you two

I kinda wonder if the effort to make them sound similar involved anything that would make the 100 sound less awesome, eg "they sound exactly the same if you set the awesome knob on the 100 at 8 o'clock."

Naaaaah EQ at noon on a 100 is the gateway to good.

I get what people are saying that they sound "similar", and the SLO Mini is a cool piece of gear for what it is. That said, the real one sounds SOO much bigger!
