    Growing up in the 60"s, we had to wear a starched shirt and tie whenever we were taken to the store. Hardware store, groceries. Clothing, whatever. It was serious business in my family. My father insisted that we were not to me judged negatively due to our clothes. We were not allowed to touch anything. We couldn't put our hands in our pockets. Never stray away from the parents. It was in the south, and we were in a highly charged, poor racist community. Both of my parents were college educated teachers, and skilled in their profession and their actions. And in poor areas, teachers were considered almost rich. White people hated us and often threatened my father for just existing.

      When churches coined the phrase, "Come as you are, " it opened up people going to church with no consideration of their looks. People started showing up in the clothes that they wear to the club. I see people at funerals looking like bums, oversized tee shirts and jeans, or young ladies in tight slacks, or thigh high skirts and dresses. I am 47, and I remember when we went to funerals, men wore suits and ladies wore dresses or suits with skirts and many wore hats. Black people used to have pride, now I have no words.

    That's what the majority of people wore
    back then. Looking at old photos, jeans my Mom only wore it around the house😂 and they called it play clothes. She wore dresses and skirts all pressed and crisp. My Dad, the same slacks and dress shirts, short or long. Hair kept in place. All their family was the same. They were not overweight, obese and not giving into consumerism. Perfect shiny dress shoes as well. Great spectacles. Small closets,but they had the basics when it came to clothes and they also had dressy clothes....very little play clothes...they invested in their appearance. Women also covered their hair at times with dressy hats, scarves or wore it pressed and curled.

    Back then everyone wore suits and dressed up. They had what many people lack today....pride. Pride of oneself. They had dignity...they presented themselves as someone to be taken seriously. They also had respected for others. My mother (RIP) would tell me stories of how whenever she went out in public--even to go to the store--she was dressed to the nines. When people travelled, they wore their best. Everyone did! Up into the 1960s, men wore hats. Do you want to know who they credited it for the decline of men wearing hats? JFK. He was the first president in modern times not to wear a hat to his inaugaration and the rest was history. (No, I'm serious. Once JFK did that--men started to not wear hats, and the whole entire industry panicked. They even hired some of Madison Avenue's best ad-men to try and reverse the trend, but nothing.)

      @ms.annthrope415 ปีที่แล้ว

      One doesn't need a college degree to make decent coin. There are lots of blue collar jobs that pay very well. But is college just a fancy trade school? No. College is supposed to make a better more informed citizen. The lower division Generla Education courses are supposed to broaden your outlook and expand their intellect before they focus on their study major. It is supposed to increase your written skills,.readinf skills, and thinking skills. And all through college, the rigor of the class work is supposed to sharpen the thinking skills and enhance analytical thought. Not every class does that, but most classes are supposed to. So, knowing something about Moliere or Honore Balzac is irrelevant to finding a job or keeping a job, and may he nothing more than impressing someone in a cocktail party, but at least you've heard of them. Maybe even read something they wrote. That might allow you to peruse more of their writing or tangentially explore other writers to satisfy your intellectuall itch. A College education may not repay you right away or in ways you can count in your bank account, but it opens doors and expand the walls to be a more productive citizen.

      That is so true. People do make judgment calls and make assumptions that may or may not be supported by facts. But they do make an impression. So make a good impression. Why do yiunthink lawyers wear their power suits when in court, especially for a jury trial? They want to impress the jury to think they are serious, civilized, affluent, and in control. When I was working as a prosecutor, I made sure my shoes were spit shined for court. If i was in trial, they were always lace ups so polished ypu can see your own reflection----lace ups because of an old prejeucie that some people tbink loafers reflect a lazy attitude. My dress shirts would be pressed in the morning. I even press my ties to remove any wrinkles from being tied. And I woukd make sure I tied my tie in a perfect knot with a dimple and the back tail end is never longer than the front of too high in the back. No higher than the fold apex of the front end of the tie.

    It’s called “dignity”. “Self-respect”. The Panthers were theater. They were posing as revolutionaries. They were not civil rights leaders.

    It is not only black people. I was a poor kid in GA in the 70s & we had "shiny shoes" & Sunday clothes.
    We are all Americans & should embrace each other.

    The Civil Rights leaders were NOT wearing their 'Sunday Best'. They were wearing nothing more or nothing less than what everyone else wore. That was how everyone dressed. When you went out you dressed decently. Jeans were mostly reserved for when you were around the house or doing 'dirty work' -- not for when you went somewhere important!!

    "Why did civil rights leaders WORE suits?" That's not even close to being an english sentence. Even in ebonics that would be a stretch. It is 2023 and most famous blacks still sound like they did in 1948. Damn rap music eh?

    Now, instead of neatly cropped Afros or cut hair, there’s hair extensions woven into the scalp; or blacks with blonde hair , or no hair. The panther sisters looked [natural]ly good back when they became conscious! But again today as back in the late 50s - 60s, we are ashamed -and want to have long wavy hair like the master in the big house.

What happened in history that changed how people dress and what made lady’s come to sporting events?
