You know, I guess most people do not know what this song is about. Is about the Viking guard of Constantinople,, the capital city of the Medieval Roman Empire (aka the Byzantine Empire), now Istanbul, in Turkey. The Norse people called Constantinople Miklagard. The Goldern Horn is a small golf on Constantinople were a large metal chain was placed to prevent ships for entering it, for defensive purposes. Elina is dressed as a Byzantine empress in the video. For Romanians, the Empire is ancestorial, Romanians being descendends of the Medieval Romans called by the western world Byzantines. So I find really interesting that a Nordic band creates a song about our old center of culture and civilization.
Ive been searching a bit for an historic event for this, but it seems it's mostly fictional, from Snorri Sturluson's work the Heimskringla, about the suppost violent escape by Harald Heralda. Although he was there and traveled back to Norway around 1040, no emperor was ever blinded by a Vangarian.
fictional or not, it's a very interesting tale. But as it happens with all tales and myths, they are based in reality, maybe just to an extent ;) Thanks for this info! Spread the Byzantine glory!
Well my friend do not forget that in Byzantium the majority of the population was Greek or greekspeaking! Also the word byzantium is greek from the ancient Greek colonist Vyzas from the city of Megara. who built the city of Vyzandio (greek colony)that many many years later was named Konstantinople.

So happy to see new Leaves' Eyes fans. I was sad with the split with Liv, yet happy to see she is doing well with other projects and also to see Elina smiling, happy, confident, and badass in this!

Well mythical.... They were tough guys, but let's be reasonable :-) Jomsvikings were also "legendary", but you find them always on a losing side, when you read the sources. Nevertheless, this song drew upon saga of Harald Hardrade, that's nice. Sajvidarsund FTW! :-)

@@hubbabubba9695 Did I say it was English? I have heard an expert describing the misuse of the word viking. You need to look into it further before saying there is no such word.
@@Rancid-Jane Well, you were putting it in an english sentence. Ok, and what's the name of that "expert"? In no academically accepted sources I'm aware of exists such a theory. There are many theories (given the fact that there's aren't much written preserved from the Nord from that time, they are no more than theories - no one really knows). According to credible nordic sources (for example "The Life of the vikings", Harrison/Svensson 2007, ISBN 978-91-27-35725-9), the origin of the word viking is actually believed to be Old English, as the earliest written sources where there word appears is there. Originally a word to describe pirates, but would later become a word to describe the nordmen raiding around northern Europe by boat. Given that the word is said to be used for pirates in general, before the northmen, it is a credible theory that this is the origin of the word. Most of the theories points at a Nordic origin though, given that it appears on a few rune stones and the word "vik" (meaning "bay") has survived into the modern Nordic countries. All these theories also mean that you become a viking, you don't do/go viking.

Glowing gold decks king's hand
Got plenty in this land
Great emperor in the strife
He was made stone-blind
Norse king's mark won't adorn
His mark gives cause to mourn
Great emperor in the strife
He was made stone-blind
For all his life
