Prolific writer Emma Donoghue discusses her new book 'Learned by Heart' with ALBW's Pat Esgate. The book focuses on the romance between Eliza Raine and Anne Lister while studying together.
Great interview, Pat! You asked all the questions I had and then some. Thank you so much for all you do in bringing the AL community together!! The whole Eliza Raine story is so worthy of our attention. Very sad to ponder that she wasn't all that mentally ill initially, but a life of being shunned by others, of loosing all family, that will make you crazy eventually. The racism she encountered was serious and all pervasive (but polite!). Thank you Pat, for such a thoughtful interview! I hope another history is written about Eliza with the new material that has been discovered. I believe I read somewhere that she died with a sizable estate. Incredible. At least the people managing her fortune didn't steal it or squander it. Emma Donoghue is such a marvelous writer. I highly recommend The Pull of the Stars, too.
I adored this so much. I will definitely be getting Emma's book. I've been wanting to know more about Eliza Raine. To get this insight into a queer woman of colour in this time period is priceless and I'm grateful to the transcribers that aided in expanding our knowledge of her.
God your a GREAT WRITER! I have never read a book as interesting way + talented way, written! U really know how to write! Are gifted with a gift of writing, so beautiful and captivating way! You can imagine the place and everything so well! When reading! It was so good book! I’m sad how Anne Lister let her traumas of Marinara, Vere and other failed relationships, harden her heart and life was so hard for Ann with Miss, Lister…..
