Dear Patricia Hughes, presently I am reading your book: Gentleman Jack, the early life of Miss Anne Lister and the curious tale of Miss Eliza Raine. Your book gives me so much pleasure in reading and learning of the long lost passed time. Those letter correspondence between Anne Lister and Eliza Raine are so heartbreaking and emotional that every word is worth of acknowledging. My deepest respect for your transcription and decoding this masterpiece of the two love ones from 1810 to 1816. The languages which was deployed at that period is just my kind of language, very flowery and sweet. Eliza, having to spend her childhood in India and moving to a distant and foreign England most had been quiet difficult life for her and her sister Jane. I know this from my own experiences. Neither the less you have done and revealed a magnificent work. Many thanks.
Rest in Peace Patricia. Such a wealth of knowledge. I was def curious if there were women of colour that were in these societies (esp queer) and the nature of their experience during this time. I'm def going to get all her books. I think that the research that Patricia was doing on Eliza, her spirit was guiding her to her tombstone.

Incredible. Lister was certainly a chump in some regards, had to do with basic morals and not the times. Such betrayal. Sure, much to admire and be in awe of, but the true history is fascinating, and quite sad for Eliza, another one who became dedicated to Lister; Eliza married her and gave her a gold ring! Wow. Glad Eliza's fortune/money went to the Crown and not Lister. A bit less to admire. SO cool PH found Eliza's grave by pure circumstance. Incredible, just incredible story.
Totally agree with your opinion, there are many women who bucked the social and societal norms to live their lives on their own terms but also had moral fiber and courage, in this relationship we see a less attractive side of Anne Lister more concerned with money and status and morally quite shallow...I was surprised that the interviewer attempted to excuse Anne Lister's behaviour by saying 'we've all done some bad things'...historical icons deserve to be examined in the round and for all of who they were and we do our community a disservice by dieting her...that discredits all the amazing research done by so many volunteers.
Misspelling above should read 'deitising' in last line.

Thank you so very much Pat for organising all these enthralling fascinating interviews which are invaluable in furthering those in depth gems of intricate information surrounding Anne Lister life. As per usual this one in particular regarding the Raine sisters life is both simply fascinating and also very sad. The influence of social norms of British life and class systems and the Empire at the time has much to answer for .
I'm guessing you're an American who has forgotten the demise of the native peoples of North America at your hands? I guess the US also has much to answer for.

This is so sad but I love to know the truth and Ann lister I think needed money but I still love GENTLEMAN JACK AND LOVED THAT I'VE GOTTEN A CHANCE TO KNOW ABOUT ANN LISTER thanks for sharing

Pobre Jane fue estafada, y todo a causa de que en ese tiempo no debían administrar sus recursos, Anne Lister les demostró a varias que sí podían, pero siempre y cuando no fueran propiedad de un hombre.
Lo que le hicieron a estas dos mujeres es criminal, Las mataron en vida. Como la ausencia de empatía y solidaridad hace mal, si la solidaridad hubiese sido una norma por encima de la hipocresía de unas costumbres absurdas, seguramente esta y muchas otras vidas hubieran sido diferentes. una mujer obligada a prostituirse por las personas en quienes confiaba por haber sido violada, que barbarie.
*Estrictos con sus modales*, manera amable de decir que eran racistas y clasistas. Terrible ser mujer en ese tiempo y sobretodo ser DIFERENTE *india por ejemplo.
LO QUE LES PASO A LAS HERMANAS RAINE FUE EVIDENTEMENTE RACISMO PURO. ESTAFA, VIOLACIÓN, DISCRIMINACIÓN.
CON ELIZA RAINE Y JANE NO FUERON DESAGRADABLES, FUERON RACISTAS. ENTIENDO QUE ANNE SIMPLEMENTE SE ENAMORÓ DE OTRA PERSONA, ESTOY SEGURA QUE SI SUS SENTIMIENTOS HUBIESEN ESTADO CON ELIZA RAINE EL COLOR DE PIEL HUBIERA SIDO LO DE MENOS PORQUE ELIZA TENÍA DINERO.
