    Slight side note about Shiver, so far the only person who has said that Shiver is female is an SVP of Nintendo of America, named Nate Bihldorf. The significance of it being him specifically is that he was also on the team responsible for censoring that Vivian the witch in a PURPLE dress from Paper Mario is trans-femme in the NA English localizations

    One thing about Shiver and the Binder you mentioned. There's a traditional form of binding a chest in japan that both men and women have did called "Sarashi". It was done by Samurai to resist injury and woman when wearing a Kimono to present a slender figure. I heard from some friends it was sometimes used as basically a Bra.
    I wouldn't really call it a Binder personally but it certainly can be used as one. Just thought this trivia was neat and wanted to share it. Have fun with Splatoon 3!

    As someone who spent several years denying their gender because of assuming that people would "just know" they are trans/NB, I feel like it's important to note that not all trans/NB people are immediately aware of their gender (or lack thereof). If you are questioning your relationship with gender, it's is important to do research on gender and identities to best understand yourself

    • @madeliner1682
      @madeliner1682 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Strong second! I assumed as much for many years because I had only been aware of one very rigid definition of what gender dysphoria is, and things I have said while 100% believing I was cis include
      "My quality of life would be better if my body was on a 24-hour hormone cycle instead of a monthly one"
      and
      "Having boobs sucks low-key, not really worth it you lucky you don't gotta deal with that shit" (to a cis man)
      and
      "pregnancy is a body horror nightmare. Even if abortions were free and easy I'd rather die than know that I have been pregnant" (and knew I wouldn't have kids since I was four 0_o)
      and I thought that since the bleeding part of my cycle didn't cause major trauma it couldn't possibly make me dysphoric (even though that's the half of the month I function worse and find it almost impossible to bathe regularly)
      Plus I have almost never been able to self-inserting in media as female, and unless I'd made a character as close as possible to my physical body, I always choose male avatars in games
      Mostly I just wanna put it out there that if you have random unexplained depersonalization/derealization symptoms that you just can't quite put your finger on the cause, that could be a way gender dysphoria presents
      (please excuse my decompression rant, I found out last week and I should have realized a long long time ago ):

      Strong third, generally you should just play around with presentation and find what feels the most correct, or realise that all of it kinda sucks (like I did) and just live in constant confusion that people do have any inherent meaning of what gender even is, come to terms with the fact that you kinda exist outside of all that, and just be a happy lil person that no one knows understands just by being looking at :D

    Undertale and Deltarune is an odd example because there's actually some debate in the games' fandom over whether the human characters are meant to be gender-ambiguous blank slates or if they are specifically intended to be nonbinary. Proponents for the latter note how these characters start off seeming like standard silent protagonists to project onto, but are later revealed to have their own distinct personality traits and thoughts, so them being nonbinary would serve as a *subversion* of gender-ambiguous blank slates.

      For kris specifically I feel like we can say they use they/them pronouns atleast, because unlike frisk their life before we see them isnt ambiguous. I feel like Apex does diversity in general perfectly. Just like you said near the end of the video, their characters that are part of the LGBTQ community or a minority are never shown off for their gender, sexuality or race. Hell I didn't even know a lot of the characters were gay or non-binary until I looked it up. But the fact I loved the characters without knowing shows that the representation was done right and wasn't something they they used as leverage to improve their character. Just my two cents.

    • @bentowers3614
      @bentowers3614 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      This, wholeheartedly, is how it should be done. Make a good character and then don't label them. Let people find out themselves through the character's actions, dialogue, etc. If you want to normalize that sort of identity or group, you cannot make them standout as being different.

    • @bromo8874
      @bromo8874 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@bentowers3614 Hmmm. I take issue with this approach. While it's of course good for characters to be fully fleshed out despite their identities, pretending like you're not allowed to openly acknowledge or focus on their identity isn't really the solution imo. The truth is, the groups you're referring to ARE different. And accepting that doesn't immediately make the story bad. It's possible to have good characters whilst also not letting their identities get sidelined. This kind of logic completely erases the possibility of having stories solely focused on the identities of marginalized people. These stories are valuable because they remind us of the very real differences that exist between folks of different racial/sexual/gender identities. Not every story needs to do this obviously but simply saying we should just make no effort to acknowledge the differences doesn't really help.

    • @valhalla_1129
      @valhalla_1129 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To me that's the issue though. For me, personally, I think Apex simply overdoes it. Putting representation in is fine, but does a game with like 25 characters need a non-binary, a trans, an autistic, an ADHD, a gay, a lesbian, a pansexual, a bisexual, an unsure, another lesbian, and a near perfect 50/50 split in gender all at once? If the idea is realistically representing people, it's not right.
      And why does the one Indian character need to look and sound stereotypically Indian if they're half British? Why are they British and Indian at all if humanity has been mingling in spaceships and on other planets? Are the ships racially segregated?
      Apex clearly does it for brownie points and I think it's far too obvious to seem genuine anymore. I'm not a fucking medal to be put on a wall of virtue signalling, I don't even necessarily want to be represented a lot. It's marketing.
      To clarify, I don't think the Devs necessarily don't mean it, but at the end of the day the person approving these changes is running a business and that business is to sell in-game purchases to as many people as possible.
      I just want a game that's fun. Make all the characters straight for all I care, I don't give a shit as long as the gameplay is enjoyable.

    Honestly Shiver's situation is bizarre because you could make the argument that her being confirmed as cis is yet another way Nintendo of America isn't being true to the original Splatoon localizations. The person that deconfirmed Shiver as some brand of non-binary was just one guy, and allegedy some people have gotten replies from other NoA representatives that claim Shiver IS meant to be non-binary.
    It might just be me coping but it's weird that every single localization (barring Portuguese) went out of its way to never refer to Shiver with pronouns or gendered language in her introduction, even in languages like French or Spanish where you REALLY have to put in work to refer to someone with gender ambiguity. If the intent was to always keep her cis all that effort just seems misplaced (and a tad queerbaity.)

The introduction we received in the direct for Deep Cut, all three of them avoided pronouns. Does that mean Frye and Big Man are non-binary? Why is it only Shiver?
      People are just looking way too into it to find scraps that aren't there. Honestly, the best way to properly represent non-binary types in games is to never call them non-binary. Just have them be a normal, honest-to-goodness, character like any other. Random things to note as a person who obsesses over the Xenoblade series:
    Xenoblade 2 did also have a seemingly nonbinary character in the form of Roc. Much like Juniper, Roc being neither male nor female is backed up by in-game gender values (which for Roc is set to the number 4). Unfortunately Roc gets barely any focus, let alone character development (because the Blade System leads to bland, one-note characters that can't do anything outside of their Drivers) but hey, at least Roc isn't a walking stereotype.
    Roc is Roc. Always has been; always will be.

    Purple is genuinely my favorite color because society hasn't declared it masculine or feminine: it is the color of royalty.
    As someone studying game development, character customization can be difficult if gender options (or lack there of) are attempted to be retroactively made fluid. However, developing from the ground up with fluidity in mind can save a lot of hassle in the long run regardless, so long as there are accommodations for customizable traits (sliders are a blessing).
    Respect game dev's declarations of character's gender & sexuality. I know it's not directly related to non-binary characters, but Bridget. Testament was a straight-forward and well-done evolution of the character from He/Him to They/Them. Conversely, Bridget went from being born He/Him to dressed and conformed to She/Her, to actively defying said conformity by declaring themselves as He/Him, before later re-actualizing their identity as She/Her. It's a journey that many transgender & genderfluid/non-binary have struggled with, which is overall positive representation. Where it gets muddy is when translations have been used as evidence against their identity, the canonicity of endings, and people clinging to wanting Bridget to be a femboy.
    End of the day: Testament is Testament, whose hobbies include:
    Fashion magazines, DIY, collecting makeup, plastic modeling (esp. giant robots), sightseeing, fishing, pottery, river trekking, road biking, appreciating opera, weight training, fortune-telling, bonsai, gardening, watching wrestling, baking, mahjong, painting (not well), embroidery, mountain climbing, nail art, golfing, star-gazing, touring hot springs, board games, writing sci-fi novels, barbecue, belly dance, beach volleyball, watching baseball, making dollhouses, liquor (they're a non-drinker), snowboarding, watching shark B-movies, collecting occult trinkets, and scrapbooks, who also so happens to go by They/Them.
    And Bridget is Bridget (who, after doing hours of research, in modern canon, now refers to herself by She/Her pronouns)~

      @@EmperorTyrael That video was definitely insightful (didn’t realize the Twitter & Pixiv drama escalated that far). My interpretation of the events in Strive is Bridget re-claiming their female identity for themselves separate from their upbringing in the village after years of introspection, doing so for herself rather than from the pressures of society (though I can still see how people interpret the situation as Bridget falling back into gender grooming childhood. I interpreted it similar to how one finds religion independently for themselves later in life despite a traumatic religious upbringing).
      Still happy to see the excitement and influx of new players because of Bridget. Be it representation for transgenderism, gender non-conformity, a cute boy in feminine clothing, a cute girl, or simply for a fighter that wields a yo-yo while tagging in a possessed teddy bear. End of the day, the reaction to the whole situation says one thing: we love Bridget: the gender-mixup yo-yo master who keeps on yoing~

    As a nonbinary person myself this video was a really enjoyable watch! It’s interesting seeing a lot of characters and series which I grew up with and love show up here as well, makes me wonder how it took me this long to figure this stuff out sometimes…
    Speaking of, Kirby is a pretty important character to me due to nostalgia and also partly because of their gender ambiguity. When most people think of Kirby they don’t focus on his gender - they just think it’s Kirby! Everyone’s favourite lil puffball. Even if most people predominantly use he/him for him due to him being presented as male in the west, that’s not what people focus on. The reason I realised I was nonbinary is because I didn’t want to be seen as male or female; I wanted to be seen as me. So in a way Kirby means a lot to me cause of stuff like that (and also many other reasons)! It’s like with the colour purple - that colour hasn’t been assigned a gender with it, it’s just purple :)
    I could honestly go on about a lot of the characters mentioned here, Kirby, testament, Juniper - they all mean so much to me because they’re representation done in an authenticate way.
    Even if Shiver is confirmed female seeing her still makes me happy because we’re starting to see more nonbinary figures in media slowly come out, especially in splatoon 3 and animal crossing where the idea is obviously there. We’ve got a long way to go, but even the small rep makes me happy. I know it would make younger me inexplicably happy too, just like Kirby did.

      It’s late where I am and I’m tired so I rambled a bit, but I did want to say that people can obviously be male or female and still be seen as them. Just for me, being seen as myself is not being put into the binary categories of male or female. To others, that category is them, and being perceived that way means they feel like who they truly are.

      @@skulllatte3352 Adding to this, our idea of a middle ground between masculine and feminine is subjective and flawed. 'Neutral' designs will often just be masculine-lite (eg. Kris) because we treat that as default. Other ways of designing characters to look neutral, mixing masculine and feminine traits, can still skew one way or the other to most audience members depending on what they focus on.
      Basically, discounting an enby character (or person!) because they look more male or female, or present more masculinely or femininely, is silly. There's no obvious, consistent middle.

Non binary people do not need to use they/them of couse, and can have any style or name they want. As the game goes on and our characters learn about love and attraction, they also begin feeling that attraction. The game doesnt fall into the traps of overly sexualized fanservice though still. The characters feel attraction and there are some very hot characters, but they're never sexualized. Also I would love to see a non binary or a male idol in Splatoon, I think it’d be a fun switch up! Big Man was clearly a trolly compromise from the creators, and I loved it so I’m fine with that lol. If you ever do another video on these kinds of topics, do you ever think you might do one about Autistic characters? It's really something that media struggles to get right, with the only really good example of an Autistic character being Donnie from Rise of the TMNT. Besides that, I really can't think of any for video games. This is all coming from someone with Austim myself btw.

    In my case, Im a cis, straight man, and I don’t really consider myself agender or androgynous or anything. However, there are things that I like doing or that I want to try that the common populace would deem “girly”, but that doesn’t mean anything to me. I want to cosplay as Bridget and wear a skirt, but that doesn’t mean anything to me. I just want to do it ‘cause it sounds really fun. Same goes for learning a dance choreography thats very “feminine”. It looks fun, I wanna do it, that’s it.

    Just a little correction, Testament was always supposed to be agender, even as far back as the original Guilty Gear. It was a mistranslation that gave them he/him pronouns in English, like how Justice also got he/him pronouns even though she is a woman.

    Slight mention to Hollow Knight, the vessels literally have no gender, it was removed as they got tossed in The Abyss and consumed by Void (dark power). They'd fit into the 1st category of Genderless Beings. [In contrast, one of Hornet's titles is the Gendered Child, as she's the only offspring of the Pale King who was not "Voided".]

    The point about Frisk/Kris being ambiguous is a huge misconception due to people glossing over the final twist in Undertale. The player is lead to believe that Frisk is their avatar for most of the game, until their real name is revealed right at the end, separating the two parties. Deltarune instead does this right off the bat by immediately undoing the initial character customization and showing Kris rebel against the player's control multiple times. In light of these twists, the exclusive use of "they" for both these characters would mean that they're NB.
    And as someone else already pointed out, the case with Shiver is straight-up censorship.

    Totally agree and loved the video, I just wanted to add that whether you make your NB character make a deal out of their gender or lack thereof or not, both of them are ok, people that play all these video games don't even know there are so many NB folks in it and that's fine, but it's ok for them to be more explicit about that too, to add more awareness, depth and much-needed representation to it, or not, again it's ok, it just depends on the character itself, and you can even use the opportunity to make a good story out of it, add some depth and problems that NB folks face or whatever the f u want the story to be, again is ok for them to talk about that OR NOT that's not forced inclusivity, they're literally just talking bout themselves and their problems of their day to day life as if literally any cisgender character would do without even get flagged for it.
    But people are quick to assume that that's "forced" because NB folks don't even have the chance to exist and be themselves normally outside in the real world and talk about them and their problems like everybody else does, that's why I think is more important if they could be more explicit about it even though again, I do agree that is totally fine if they choose not to.

      Being non-binary in the world of Xenoblade 3 means nothing ultimately. The characters have no concept of masculine or feminine traits and traditions. They aren't born naturally and do not understand the biological capacity for creating new life. Gender and even sex, does not exist in Xenoblade 3 as far as the Keves/Agnes characters in the game world are concerned.

    the shiver situation was disgusting... nintendo threw a bone to transphobes and let them run wild for like a WEEK. nobody had any reason to consider shiver female until it was explicitly stated, yet the Gamers(tm) just HAD to take the opportunity to be transphobic towards fans who were just having fun and hopeful that theyd be represented in one of their fav games. like youd have to be a real sad sack of shit to seek out and harass fans of a *kids game* to enforce the gender binary on a cartoon octopus person just bc they have long hair and a hint of purple in their colour scheme
    regardless, trans girl shiver is great too and im glad shes living her truth😌
