  • This video is about a Melonseed Skiff sailing adventure on Lake St. Louis (Montreal, Quebec Canada). The Melonseed skiffs Grenville and Beyefendi sailed from the Baie d’Urfe Yacht Club to Pointe-du-Moulin on Ile Perrot where we managed to crash a wedding!
The Pointe-du-Moulin windmill is the oldest working windmill in Quebec. It was built in 1708. This heritage site including the adjacent miller’s house (built between 1785 and 1791) offers guided tours to visitors. The site also hosts weddings as we discovered on this adventure!

Sailing a classic boat in calm waters with a good breeze, one of the most enjoyable gratifying activities one can do and still keep the clothes on!

Ahhh...glad to see you're back. It was a long winter without your updated, wonderful videos. I acquired my (used) Melonseed in January and have been having a wonderful time sailing it in lakes in Central Texas. Your previous posts introduced me to the Melonseed and inspired me to get one. It was one of the best decisions I've made. Hold Fast!

Wow … so glad that you’re enjoying your Melonseed. They are really special eh! Any chance that you’ll post a video of your sailing adventures? I’d really like to see that! Also, have you signed up on the Melonheads chat group?

I once sailed in that region on a friend Siren 17 (From The club de voile Île Perrot.) I also went trough the canal Lachine on my Sandpiper 565 and spent the night in the Ile Dowker bay. That is a good place to sail. Nice video by the way! 😎👍

Merci Michel! PS: I hope the water level has dropped sufficiently to allow you to launch your boat … it’s July already!!

@@GrenvilleMelonseedSkiff496 Hey John! Yes! The water level is OK now. The docks are not installed yet but it is not a big deal! I will be on the water next week for sure. The season has a late start but I hope for a late ending to compensate! 😉 Take care!

Well if it's July 5, it wasn't Albert crashing his niece's wedding on the 31st. hahaha. He raised my consciousness about this design, and now I am taking a look at it. It's interesting, has potential. A very nice video, too. Thanks.

I hope to build one. I am curious which is faster - Goat Island Skiff or Melonseed? Any idea?

I’ve never sailed the GIS but since it is lighter than the MS with a longer waterline it might be faster? On the other hand, the MS sprit rig performs very well in both light and heavy air. The GIS might be easier to build. Good luck with your boat construction project whichever design you choose!

Beautiful boats. These dont look much bigger than a sailing canoe. Do you need to change sides when tacking? I didnt see any tacking in the video.
I have just started learning to sail my own little sailing canoe and realised it is quite different to sailing a normal dinghy.

The Melonseed skiff is a beautiful design indeed! At just 14 feet in length, they are not as long as some canoes but they are definitely more “sailboat” than canoe. I do occasionally use a paddle mostly when approaching or leaving the dock in light airs. The boat can be rowed but I prefer to sail it. It tacks and gybes like any sailboat. It has a pivoting centreboard. In light airs I can sit on the leeward side but when the breeze builds I move over to the windward side. The hull shape and sprit rigged sail provide good stability in heavier air. I’ve never sailed one but I do like the idea of a sailing canoe! I wish you many happy adventures as you learn to sail your canoe and well done on your boat building project!

@@GrenvilleMelonseedSkiff496 Thanks for the reply. If you are interested I posted a video of my first sail here. th-cam.com/video/AJJTMAS4q7E/w-d-xo.html The design is similar to a Sabre, but narrower, with a flat bottom, and a lug sail. It is only 85cm wide. I learned on my second sail that it makes no sense to change hands when tacking, as it is not possible to sit sideways anyway. I am looking forwards to trying some stronger winds to see how it handles them.
