JJ was the most hated player but it had to be matched by the love of his fans. He was my favorite player and is probably my all time Duke favorite.

I am a,die hard Duke fan. Right in the middle of NC here. Surrounded by UNC fans. My mother is a Duke fan, but my brother is a UNC fan, all of friends, and alot of ex friends too as UNC lovers. (I'm being nice not using the term I usually call them lol). But, I will never forget I had to defend Greg Paulus to those Tarheel fans. I got into a huge verbal argument they were making fun of him. UNC fans are the absolute worst on earth. People say Duke fans,are but I have brutally verbally attacked by UNC fans for many years. Laettner is my all time favorite player. Kids today go who? I was in HS when they won back to back championships.
JJ got hit hard by so many fans .I was in constant defense of him also. Love all the Duke players. I try naming a top 5 it's so hard. Grant Hill just legendary too.
I love how JJ stood his ground and went back at the fans. I had no idea all he went thru though. So much strength against adversity.
Now, I will get really mad if someone goes after Coach K. I usually just leave the area.

I think everyone has had one of these moments where their life's work just kind of blows up in their faces and the fragile reality falls apart and you start questioning everything. Glad JJ was able to get thru it. Usually takes help. He got it. others aren't as fortunate.

I wanna throw somethin in on this, and see how it grabs ppl. I've been watching JJ for a long time now. I'm a Duke lifer, and approximately the same age as him. He's always struck me as incredibly intelligent, but, even above that, painfully self-aware. The kinda awareness that notices the circus of sports for what it is. When I listen to the beginning of this clip, it makes me think of the saying that "ignorance is bliss." My comeback to that has always been, "If ignorance is bliss, then intelligence is misery." I wonder how much of his struggles before he got a handle on things stem from the very same intelligence & self-awareness that makes him so good in the space he now occupies... 🤔

In the NBA he would have been cut. No coach would have come to get him and help dig him out.

He is the reason i watch basketball his senior yr at duke was my 8th grade year. and reggie bush was the reason i watched football.
JJ put up a lot of bricks in his Duke career, but his senior year was pretty good: 47% from the field, 42% from three, 28.9 points a game.

@@ramsnation196 Because he was given stuff he did not deserve. For example, he won the Sullivan award as the best amatuer athlete in the county. Mind you, not only did Duke only made the sweet 16 that year, but JJ beat out 2 Olympic gold medalist, 2 World Champions, as well Vince Young and Reggie Bush. The great Bill Walton is the only other men's college basketball player to win this award. That is the biggest reason why people hated him.
