      ​@@hihi-rp2uyoh it's worse than that. Essentially the manufacturer engineers warned the o-rings could fail in the conditions NASA wanted to launch. So yes, part of the joke is NASA was warned ahead of time this was a potential outcome and they launched anyways.
      So that's why they're quoted as saying o-rings are important.
      It's actually a pretty interesting story that's worth learning about. Especially for what happened to the guy who warned them.

      This is the “mandrel” that they were talking about at 23:58. They mentioned that they “would have gotten glue on the mandrel”. This would then mean that the core’s burn surface would have bits of epoxy all over it. Not good for steady and consistent burns.

    I was always interested in the stack up of these bigger rockets so this was super interesting! As a former mold maker and current engine installer/tester for a jet manufacturer I can attest to the benefits of double gloving! Rock on Mr Barnard!!!

    Something you have to admire about rocketry is to the untrained eye just looking at the parts you'd think "That looks simple enough" but inevitably everything down to the last fraction of a millimetre has to be within spec else it can snowball into a complete balls up. The planning alone before even having parts to assemble is amazing to see. I don't think I could stomach spending as much time and money on something that will instantly reflect a mistake in glorious high speed failure. That takes immense character and strength of which I can only hope to possess one day.
    With that being said I love how entertaining and encouraging you all are when setting this up. The way you make it seem so attainable to mere plebs like me whilst also making it clear effort does go into this is awe inspiring. I look forward to seeing how this progresses as with the other builds

      We're done with that series - sorry! I stopped enjoying producing those videos. I know they're helpful, but I wanted to focus on projects I found fulfilling to stay away from burnout.

      @BozoTheJew if you scroll through the channel, the next part of Landing Model Rockets series has been covered in Joe's NAR presentation, where he discusses how TVC works, and provides a broad overview while going into workable detail about the flight software. The specifics, as always, are upto the DIYer.
      So now, you have the early Scout videos for airframe assembly, the parachute section has been covered in vivid detail recently, and with enough practice and Googling skills, you can recreate the TVC mount. That's (a) the airframe (b) the TVC motor mount (c) Parachutes - done. The Landing Model Rocket series covers the flight computer building and assembly, and gets into cursory detail about the Arduino environment. Then comes the NAR conference presentation where Joe explains how PID control works in TVC.
      So I guess the Landing Model Rockets series has already been concluded completely.

    just wanted to comment, that anti-static bracelet, grounding the motor and doing all propellant loading on a humid day, in a humid environment are all essential to completely eliminate static discharge igniting the motor. The speed you were adding the fiberglass fins, could definitely build up a charge.

      @@alex4alexn It takes an open flame or a red hot resistance wire making contact with the propellant. I've set some off with a solder iron. Many hobbyists 'cook' their rocket fuel for better ingredient integration, the flash point is fairly high. Depending on the formulation, of coarse.

    BOTTLENECK Resolution - Have 2 people applying epoxy to the grains so there isn't a pause waiting for you. Also, you can have a dowel in the grain core to keep them lined up as long as you pull it out incrementally to avoid gluing it into the grains permeately. Great vid.

    Hey man :) I work with epoxy often and you really should ventilate the room or wear a filtered face mask from 3M. You seem to be doing bigger and bigger rockets so it'll mean more epoxy curing in your home. To ventilate the room, you make a filtered intake twice as big as the exhaust and you pull through the intake. The room will be positive pressure so no dust will come in.

    Me thinks the grain manufacturer and casing manufacturers should think of keying them to make assembly a WHOLE lot easier and less error prone.
    Explosives are fun and all but you want boom boom making rocket go up

      Most of the time you don't need to key the grains, because the core is symmetrical. So most of the time, the key would just be a needless extra bit of machining.

    So two friendly options/suggestions for next time: One, use a slower epoxy, there's an endless number of formulations out there, I can eagerly suggest any SmoothOn products. Two, if you want to keep using the same 10min epoxy, throw both components of your A/B epoxy in the fridge before mixing. Then store the mixed epoxy on a bed of ice/coldpack while doing your assembly. You'll dramatically slow the chemical reaction and give you a lot more time to work. You should still ATTEMPT to make it all happen within the advertised pot-life, but that extra wiggle room, if something goes wrong, is an absolute life saver when you find yourself slathered in goo and with popsicle sticks stuck all over your gloves. I use these methods all the time with all of the catalyzed polymers i use when I know things may go slower than the pot life (silicone, epoxy, vinylester, polyester, etc.). Conversely, if you've got a piece that has a long pot life and you are done with your job, you can set it out in the sun on a warm day and it will cure up dramatically more quickly. (Fun fact: almost all epoxies will gain additional strength from an elevated temperature post-cure, bonus nachos!)

      Cesaroni supplies the glue with the motor. I believe that the glue isn't actually epoxy, but HTPB, which is also the binder in the propellant. A different adhesive would probably work, but you might be tossing your motor warranty out the window.

      @@neutronium9542 I am not aware of a 2 component HTPB formulation, that doesn't mean it's not out there but I've never seen it. They just said 'epoxy' a whole bunch of times but 'epoxy' is often used very generically, to your point. Either way, even if it is some unusual HTPB two-component polymer, the fridge trick will still almost for sure work; as it does to retard almost all chemical reactions. If you have any more info on the precise adhesive Cesaroni use, i would love to read up on it. I'm very interested in adhesives and polymers. Don't put too much effort into finding it on my account though. Cheers!

    @bpsspace... Joe, I know nothing about amateur rocketry, but is it not critical that the holes in the 6 motors are aligned? If so, could you use a broomstick or pvc pipe to align as you load them into the sleeve? Love your content...I was hospitalized for 1.5 years for heart failure and became interested in space and rocketry with the help of your channel. Thanks for helping me through a tough time

    Watching Charlie and Joe (and Co.) working to insert that grain was like something out of a movie - I was absolutely on the edge of my seat despite knowing it was all going to be ok. 10/10 better than Scorsese

    I've really enjoyed all those over-produced JB only vids with all their comedy and even 'Retro-Joe' to his roots with Bo Burnham flare but these recent collabs with Xyla really brings it down to earth (do both)

    I'm glad to see you enjoying yourselves, but after the first one you didn't need to coat the circumference of the grains since it was being scraped off as soon as you pushed it in. 👍

    to save orientation for all holes you can use a ... plastic stick. Put all the briquettes with fuel on the stick through the holes and remove the stick after that.

    could you use indents in the plastic lining and engine grains to guide them during assembly, and prevent them rolling during flight? sort of like a ridge in the side that acts as a guide rail?

    Maybe you could put the grains up on a stick, glue the ends together, cover the whole stack in epoxy and shove that into the liner?

    Thank u, i from Mexico, I'm working in a aluminum roket because i don't have enough money to buy something like that jajaja, I'm doing all the pieces of the roket with less than 100 dollar, i said, it's no the best quality but it works, get me luck for the first launch 🐥

    The proper way to mix resin in a cup with a stick (according to millions of dollars worth of government research) is a figure 8 motion while scraping the sides and bottom of the container.
