I use helmet, gloves and butt protector always and depending on the spot, I’ll use the back protector. Everything has saved me from imminent death at least twice

@@sk8bor3d aside from the obvious helmet and gloves, the butt pads need more recognition. Those have quite literally saved my ass numerous times.

I feel very secure wearing loose fit jean/denim shorts with Triple 8 Bum Saver padded shorts. I've bounced along on my ass far more than hitting my knees or elbows...

For me, there is 3 essentials, slide gloves, kneepads and helmet. But I also use crash pant and elbow pads.
And back protector for faster runs (personnally I use a Dainese Pro Armor, certified for race motorbike, so I think it's good enough for longboard, aha :)

Good video as usual. Bcoz I’m a noob, I got thicker padding until I get better. One item that may be unique is forearm nomex/Kevlar sleeves: oddly to protect my tattoos. 😆 I got lucky on my first wipeout and only a little ink came out result of deep abrasion.

bushing setup is tough, it varies alot person to person. I'd recommend using stock and the going harder or softer dpending on what you want

Love your vids and posts on Longboard Family, I highly recommend you upgrade to alpine stars padded compression shorts, as they use hard plastic outer shell and soft padding inner lining. These are very helpful for those slides that eat your pants or shorts, that way you slide on the plastic plates.

Hey Mr. Downhill! This is just the video I was looking for. I took a fall a month ago and couldn't walk for two weeks due to swelling around my knee. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge you've collected. I started on a cheap eskate for commuting, but your videos helped me pick out the parts for my first non-electric longboard. So fun continuing to build longboarding skills.
Just wondering though, do you own an eskate or have you ever thought about getting one? It's kind of like being able to put a hill under your feet anywhere, no?

Hey man, have a question that I can't find a lot of info on online.
I have a Switchblade and I've used it to learn how to slide. It's been amazing so far. But it seems like when I try to put on some slidier wheels than the stock mini zombie hawgs that came with it, I get worse sliding performance. I've heard that the truck width should be close to the width of the board for best performance. I have the stock bear grizzlys gen 6. With the mini zombies, the tips of the wheels do indeed match the width of the board. But with the other wheels that specialize in sliding, the width is shorter. A few centimeters. It's kind of easier to highside as well because of it. When sliding it feels like the wheels are digging into the ground even though they have rounded lips just like the zombies. I think this is another issue caused by the width. I mean imagine having really narrow trucks on a wide board, obviously it would be easier to highside and the wheels would dig in more.
How do l fix this? Would the other wheels preform better if they matched the board width? Me and my friend thought of putting a spacer behind the wheel before mounting it to make them stick out more and match the width. Idk how safe this is though. The contact patch of all the wheels I've bought are all the same as the zombies, but the core on the zombies is much "inward" so they stick out more when mounted and therefore match the board width. The other wheels have a more centered core.
Sorry for the long question, hard to find the words to explain such a specific problem. What do you think I should do?

I've been thinking about getting some high top. They may be more comfortable when foot braking. Adding a little protection between my ankle and the edge of the board.
Also, they may protect from an ankle brake in an awkward fall.
    Your thoughts?

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

yes high tops add more support and some protection. I loved my Vans hitops cause they protected my ankles from scrapes.
I don't really suffer a lot of the same injuries these days but yeah :)

Hi, Nice video.. i like your videos.
i use to be skateboarding on 90's and now i return after 20 years but on cruiser board. I really love it.
but my landyatchz is very fast but so scary ..
I would like to now if you can share with us which wheels are good for pebbles but less speed than other ones. i would like to start with good wheels but not too fast yet.
I am using fatties 63mm great wheels but so fast for me now!! can you recommend me other ones? or do you think they are almost the same speed?

The problem I have is how to protect my pants when I fall ?
Because, when I fall on my butt, even at slow speed, that makes a hole on the pants. And under the pant there is my crash pant "TSG crash pant A", which is not cheap... so I don't want to destroy it!
I was thinking to add a piece of leather on the pant, on the butt, but I don't have a sewing machine, and by hand it's difficult. And I don't know if it's possible to glue it, which glue, etc...
Maybe a piece of soft PVC like canyoning butt protection, etc...
Do you know some tips and materials to protect the pant on the butt ?
    Thanks ;)

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Sewing in leather is worth it. It would be worth taking a few pants to a seamstress to get it done for you. Idk about gluing, doesn't seem reliable. But yeah the pants will liekyl last you a very long time!

    • @-zoave-
      @-zoave- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@downhill254skate Cool, thanks for the advice Abuga ;)
So I'll try to sew some leather patches (probably by hand, and by myself !)
I think I don't have enough money to pay a seamstress, unless I find a cheap one. I was thinking to try to use my mom's sewing machine...! But it cannot sew leather. Leather need special sewing machine. Much strong than standard ones. I also saw on internet that there is a sort of simple small manual sewing machine for leather, called automatic sewing awl, it's just a needle on a handle, with a roll of thread. Maybe I'll get that. But I need first to find leather patches !

I feel like you missed a very important part, the one I was curious about the most when I clicked tbh, how do you protect your pants from getting obliterated? I usually just go to thrift stores and buy anything with the thickest fabric/denim but I still blow through them like the Marlborro man through a pack of smokes. When I started sliding I would use a considerable amount of ductape that would last until the end of the sesh more often than not, but I was wondering about more permanent solutions
