  • Welcome back to The Making Of A Pilot. This private pilot series is rolling on after Jonathan flew solo in the last video. Watch that here:
    • Jonathan's FIRST SOLO ...
In this episode it's time for Jonathan to learn how to do short and soft field takeoffs and landings. They aren't easy at first, especially after just mastering normal takeoffs and landings but they are crucial for pilots to master too!
Enjoy the flight and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any episodes of The Making Of A Pilot!

Did my first short field takeoff today, between the lower amount of fuel we had on board and the strong headwind, we practically took off like a helicopter. I could still see the thousand foot markers at around 200 ft.

Love how fast Jonathan picks up on things. Should probably change the name of the series, he's already a Pilot, just yet to be certified! Awesome job, Jonathan. Great video, Lewis!!
Can't wait to see the x-country. Have a Blessed day.

Great video Lew! A little bump of power (100-200RPM) during the flare helps me arrest my sink rate and make those soft field landings super soft. Keep it up Jonathan! You’re doing great!

Thanks for this. I've missed flying for the last few years and your video delivery (wing cams and all), physics explanations, and thinking face brought me straight back to flight school. Like riding a bike, you never forget learning all this. Awesome job making these, for real.

Good job. I've got my Sport check ride in March. Been struggling with hitting my short field landing. I'll take the pointers learned here to my next flight.

I think it's great that you make these little fun challenges for the students. I try to invent challenges for myself, every time I fly. Otherwise flying circuits is just bloody boring.

I always do soft-field take-offs in a C172 with a roll of nose-down trim to balance the lift of flaps 10, otherwise the pressure required to keep the nose down and in ground effect is excessive IMHO. Early in training, I would always pop out of ground effect and climb early like I saw in this video, but adding the roll of nose down trim changed that and allowed me more control.

I too have trouble w/ the flare in my 74 Archer 1 (32' hershey bar wings). Making smooth small adjustments when pulling elevator back at the right ht above rwy is the difference between a good flare or a total balloon fiasco. 300 landings and I'm still learning.

As a nonpilot, I'm wondering if you can put some forward slip to lose height on the short field landing?

Damn, go big or go home, right? DVT here, not a student except in the broader sense of "there's always more to learn."
