@@jordywilliams You do realize that Willie had a nerve damage done to him in the quarter final? he played the quarter final, semi final, and final with 10% feeling and 70% range of motion in his left arm. Thats why he made mistakes. Plus you can't start Steyn since he's the Utility back.
Even though he barely played in RWC2019, his versatility in covering any backline position has allowed Erasmus to have 6 forwards rather than 5 on the bench. Thanks to this, SA have destroyed opponent sides in 2nd half and won the RWC.

Could kick long n short range penalties, and he had good speed and versatile as most. And something most players didn't have, which he did even as a 19yr old, confidence and bmt.

One minute to go - dropkick from 30 m on the right in open play. Sneaks in and over. The crowd roar...........................sorry, dreaming again.
I always watch the game live with the SA commentary and subsequently watch the game again with the opposing team's commentary (thanks to TH-cam). When Frans Steyn kicked that monster penalty, the Welsh commentators said that he has been doing it for 12 years, Except that he has been doing that for a lot longer than that, considering that he was in the World Cup winning Springbok team in 2007 (14 years ago) and did similar feats for his province before that. In anyone's books he should have racked up 150 test by now. Except that he is his own man, who does his own thing. He plays the moment and is not a stickler to a pattern. That is why so many previous coaches did not choose him.
He was at the 2011 rwc maybe the 2015 one not to sure, coaches also have to take in consideration talent, they don't want to overuse a player and then he gets injured. But yeah he is certainly something special, he gave prince harry a beer at 2019 rwc lol yster
Agreed. Back when he started, I would have stuck him into one position, 15 most likely but why not 10. And why did we never use him as our primary goal kicker. If you can boom them over from 60m at his success rate, one has to realize that he does have accuracy as well as length. The further the kick the smaller the posts, even if you are 'in front' of the sticks. I feel because of his all-round talent teams did with him what was best for the team. Nothing wrong with that, but many times overlooked when giving credit to players. Brilliant, brilliant. Rugby great.
this kid was a He-Man on the field and a lekker boertjie off of it. I hope to see more fresh young talent come out of Free state soon with the Cheetahs taking on Europe.

I know I didn't have to do this but I feel I have to for the sake of those horrible subtitles. At a point I became hyperactive probably, then became skinny and ended up playing Flyhalf. Reporter in English. Francois: Standard 6 (Grade 8) I went to Grey's in Bloem (Grey's - School & Bloemfontein - City), it was a very good school to me. I still believe it was the best school I could have attended. They looked at me and helped me out in time, yeah, and I played Rugby for the Under 14's and developed myself in the ranks. Coach De Bruyn: Frans (Francois) is very mature, you can have a conversation with him, you'll notice when you talk to him that he's mature, that way I believed he was ready for anything like this, he was completely ready. If he wasn't the top player then he was at least in the Top 3. He's outstanding, he's passed are phenomenal and when he kicks he kicks a mile away. Francois' Father: You know, he began as a Hooker (Not the stripper kind😂), then Under 13's Craven Week, a player had dropped him on his head, so badly he had to spend 3 days in intensive care. It was a pitfall and he thought he'd never play again, and when he came through, he said there's nothing he wants to do but play Rugby. From there, through all his injuries and all the problems off and on the field, he took it head on and that's why he's here today. Reporter: As a Flyhalf, you make your debut with the Springboks as a Winger, what do you expect in the game? Francois: Sir I really don't know, we'll see, uhm, I don't know, I'm looking forward to it, it's like Jake said, "No one knows what to expect Saturday", we'll just see what happens Saturday. 👍😎👌

Needs to learn to pass more though. My biggest issue with Steyn (and de Allende) is that they hog the ball and play crash rugby. They completely stuff up any running threat that our backline might offer. My favorite center pairing in the last 5 years was Serfontein at 12 and Kreil 13.
It was only when I saw Nonu try and intimidate Steyn by standing up to him face-to-face, but Nonu's face was the height of Steyn's chest, that I realized the size of this guy! He was/is certainly an under-utilized talent of SA Rugby!
Back when Steyn started he was my favorite, it's to bad his not playing for us permanently, ex. Super 15 and the Tri nations, my opinion is he is the only kicker that can kick long distances
My immediate take when we lost that Quarter Final to Australia in 2011 WC, was that if Frans Steyn had not been injured in the final pool stage we would've won that game.
The Springboks can't afford to let players such as Francois Steyn, Marcel Coetzee, Combrinck, Habana, Duane Vermeulen (etc) fall off the radar. These are world class players, many of which have abilities unique only to them (as is the case with Steyn's kicking abilities). These guys aren't finished yet, and need to be included in the Bo squad, at all costs.
For all that he has achieved, 2 world cup wins, 2 lions series wins a number of tri-nations/rugby championship wins... He still has not fulfilled his full potential... He will go down as a legend of the game but he is still short of his full potential.

Yes. South Africa has a rich history of wasting talented players. Amazing players like Ruan Pienaar, Francois Hougaard, Pat Lambie and Frans Steyn. These players were such gifted footballers that they could (and did) play in almost any position. And how were these talented players rewarded? Slapped with the title "utility back" and relegated to the bench. What makes this habit particularly irritating is that South Africa is not traditionally blessed with a lot of back line talent to waste. We had better not waste the genius of Cheslin Kolbe and Herschel Jantjies (Unless of course, we want to remain second to the old enemy, who seem to grow talented back line players like weeds).
Not sure how accurate that is regarding Pat Lambie. He suffered multiple concussions that forced him out of the game for lengthy periods until it got to the point where one more could have proved fatal. He was advised by a number of neurologists that to keep playing would be a risk to his life. Just google something like "what ended Pat Lambie's career?" There's plenty of info out there. I do agree that he may have been moved around the park too much to allow him to entirely settle and I know what that can do to one's mindset/confidence, but I think if he'd stayed injury free he would have made his mark.It would be interesting to have the stats regarding his career to help come to a more informed conclusion.
