There is so much to get from this documentary but can I just say how cute these two are? Like they are just so happy and you can feel their almost child-like joy exuding from both of them. I don't think I've ever smiled so much watching a doc before.

@14:09 That is my wife's grandfather Joseph who was geologist who assisted in choosing lunar landing sites exclaiming a volcanic mix when Astronaut excitedly discovered orange soil. She was so proud of him. Now she is with him in heaven. I love you Pattyann.

    • @Rune3D

That's so cool! I was actually starting to wonder because he really stood out to me! Seeing him so excited over orange soil on the moon is just so honest and pure! It kind of broke my heart a little bit to see him go from unbottled excitement to dissapointment when the flight director said "What we go is what we got." He looked like he really wanted to say "Just a few more minutes, the others can wait..." 75 hours on the moon seems like a long time, but when there's so much to see and explore, it's almost no time at all.
Thank you for sharing! My grandfather, Sandy was also a geologist :)

Going to the moon must've been such a bittersweet experience, for one knowing you've been somewhere no person has been before must be awe inspiring, but the sadness of knowing you'll most likely never return to the moon must be deep. The fender on the lunar rover. Fixing that with the maps they had and some clamps is all the proof I need.
This by far, is the best documentary of all the Apollo missions. It is just so phenomenal, so spectacular, so incredible, it should be mandatory for everyone in high school to watch and have an exam the next day to see if the students can fully comprehend and appreciate what it took to accomplish- in my opinion, the greatest achievement in the history of the world. Mankind's ultimate quest to touch another world.
Just so beautiful. So utterly magnificent.
I don't know what created all of this- the moon, the Earth, and the stars, but whatever it is, it's so beyond our ability to comprehend, it's so profoundly complex, yet I feel it admires our courage and curiosity.
We will probably never understand how this was all created, but at least we have been given the tools to try.

The ending was so beautiful, but also so sad. All put together you as a viewer feel like the third explorer with Cernan and Schmitt. You go on this incredible journey into the unknown, see it all up close, almost as though for yourself. Look back at our fragile blue marble in the sky void. Yet you know where it all went, and we've been stranded in low orbit for nearly half a century. Reach out mankind, touch the stars.

The Apollo program what a great accomplishment, certainly ranks up there as one of mankind's greatest achievements, a wonderful documentary that celebrates the expertise and ingenuity of NASA and especially the bravery of all the astronauts, one thing that surprised me was the way Eugene Cernan (R.I.P.) and Harrison Schmitt seemed to be enjoying their experience on the Lunar surface.

Ideals have long since been lost. Nothing wrong about SpaceX and its rivals here. What I mean is that the spirit of America is different, or maybe even lost. Questions to hoaxers:
      - Is there on earth a vacuum chamber large enough to install a movie set big enough to film the EVA's of Apollo XI to XVII ?

When I was a kid in the 80's I was an Eagle Scout. I received congratulatory letters from both Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan. But at the time I was only "Neil Armstrong"! Who cares about anything else? Then in the 90's with Apollo 13, both the book and movie, was all the rage. Yet now that I've had decades to reflect on the science-side of going to the moon, I find Apollo 17 to be the most interesting. I'm so grateful that I got that letter from Gene and wished that I would have appreciated it more at the time. This documentary expertly covers the "why" America went to the moon. Probably one of the best documentaries on any subject that I've ever seen.

    • @rockethead7
      @rockethead7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Cernan is (was) definitely one of the best ones to talk with. The man knew exactly how much detail to give when answering your questions. He put everything in very laymen terms if he was talking with an average Joe. He could easily switch to speaking at an engineering level if he was talking with someone about very technical things. His mind was intact well into old age (unlike a few of the others). And, of course, he spent more time on the lunar surface than any other astronaut.
As for the missions themselves, it's a little bit like picking your favorite pair of shoes. It can change with mood. It's easy enough to dismiss Apollo 12 and 14, because they weren't the first, but, they weren't J missions like Apollo 15/16/17, which stayed for 70+ hours and had the rovers. Apollo 11 was the most "vanilla" mission, traveling the least distance away from the lander, flattest terrain, only one EVA for a couple of hours. But, it was the first, so they just wanted to get there and get home safely, no bells and whistles. So, if you didn't want to be first, and you just wanted to have longer stays on the moon, and see more grandeur, yeah, you need to go with Apollo 15/16/17. In today's mood, my favorite is Apollo 15. Hadley Rille is just such a spectacular site. But, yeah, Apollo 17... truly amazing site also. Maybe in tomorrow's mood.

@@rockethead7 I think that they're all exceptional because of the incremental challenges and/or purposes of them. I certainly will look into more of 9, 10, 12, 14, 15 & 16 at some point. There's a great documentary on Apollo 8 as well. Sometimes I put on apolloinrealtime.org and just listen to mission audio in real time. Oh to have been part of that when it happened (granted almost most all of it happened just before I was born)!

Looks like it was filmed in LM simulator or so as the DSKY on actual Apollo 17 flight had those 4 extra lights. 2 of them (NO DAP and PRO DISP) were added for later missions (i think Apollo 15-17) as those extended stay missions used modified software for both AGC and AGS.

I was only 13 years old when Apollo 11 lfirst landed on The Sea of Tranquility almost 50 years ago and I was living in Guatemala City. By the time Apollo 17 returner from the Moon I had a tremendous desire and hunger for everything related to Space. Apollo - Soyus followed and Skylab went into Earth Orbit as our first Lab In Earth Orbit. But nothing compares to The Spirit Of Apollo that remains intact in my memory and my heart even after 50 revolutions around the Sun. so I just want to salute the men and women that took part on this fantastic journey almost 50 years ago and to All The Apollo Program Astronauts that executed their missions with Honor and in Good Faith for The Benefit of All Mankind . They came in Peace and left a tremendous legacy for All future generation to continue the exploration of the Lunar Surface and beyond. This Nation has been directed to Go Back To The Moon in 5 years and I believe we can do it once again only this time we will not abandon The Moon ( The Spirit Of Apollo Is Still Alive) any more and we will find better and new ways to reach distant destinations and Know We Are Riding On The Shoulders Of Giants.
