LMU Animation 2021 Thesis Film
Thank you for watching!
GREY is my directorial debut senior thesis film about the duality of man. Following an orphan wolf pup and a villager in medieval Germany, this short gives an introspective and remedial take on the classic human canine relationship, one that I believe many viewers can draw new meaning from. Grey won the Golden Lion Award at the SFTV Industry Awards 2021, and was featured at the Newport Beach Film Festival 2021, Animotion Film Festival 2021 in Florence, Italy, and the Animation Film Festival in Paris, France.

I was hesitant about the style from the thumbnail but it completely grew on me when I saw it in motion. The way it looks like a children’s book adaptation is really charming. I really like how the horse looked even though he wasn’t meant to be a main focus. I love to see big horses with thick legs and sloping backs get animated with the same love as slender long leg horses get.
Thank you so much! This means a lot.
I think the horse is a shire horse

@@vasilinamikhaylova133 Thanks and the animation is AMAZING!!
I feel sad for the wolf puppy, especially being traumatized of its mother being killed with an arrow in a flashback after the man killed the brown wolf near the end.🥺 4:39
What an adorable baby on the thumbnail, hope nothing terrible happens to it.
Well technically nothing happens to the wolf.
D: I feel for both the human and the young wolf. That's sad.. tho the man shouldn't have, the wolf that was a threat was no longer and was about to run away. You'd think the man old have given it some thought before shooting, because he raised a pup and you'd think some part of him would see the pup he raised in that wild wolf. This was a nice little animation, kind of would love more story with the future, or even a movie of this.
There's actually more coming!
@@user-wo3zl5dz9d oh good!!! I'm excited to see then!! Thank you!!
He was worried about the safety of the wolf he raised.
@@w1ndgeneral226 Right . . hm.
The horse knew it would end badly.
This is adorable and deserves a lot more likes! The artstyle reminds me of that wolf show that I forget the name of off the top of my head. Wolfrunners or Wolfwatchers, something like that.
Its Wolfwalkers but yeah it gives off the vibes!
wolfwalkers but it not a show it's a movie.
The movie is called Wolfwalkers
The second wolf was in retreat. He didn't have to die. Grey is a smart little thing.
I find it interesting how much this parallels with another animated short called "Small Sacrifice". (SPOILERS) In that short, a fox decides to raise some baby rabbits, and, in doing so, loses her mate and decides to give up hunting prey for their sake. Soon, she lets the rabbits go free and dies of starvation.
Both these shorts teach harsh lessons about compromise. To me, they kind of subvert the Disney-inspired wholesome story about characters of different species becoming family, by showing just what that kind of relationship would imply. To make it work, there needs to be a balance in what is compromised. A predator can't just become mother to prey and expect not to deny herself the need to hunt. On the other hand, a man can't tame a beast and expect to continue hunting their kind as he has always had. In the former's case, the fox mother compromised too much and she lost everything, including her life. In the latter's case, the man compromised little and lost his relationship with Grey. It's much worse for the man, though, since at least the fox was still appreciated by the rabbits for her sacrifice after all, while the man will have to live with the fact that very wolf he raised abandoned him and may even try to kill him the next time they cross paths, and that it was his own fault. Either way, the lesson is simple: Compromise everything, and you'll lose what you already have. Compromise nothing, and you'll lose all that you've gained.
The ending hit me right in the feels. I didst expect such a turn, but it was a very interesting idea. The animations are really good, too.
Great work and an awesome story ❤ Will gladly watch more from you in the future!
I think we also need to remember that maybe he didn’t kill the wolf because he was mean, but for survival purposes. Although I certainly don’t blame the other wolf for leaving-😭
I love the concept of this story and seeing this as a movie would be absolutely sick!
Wonderfull short film i love the story the wolfs are nicely drawn in this.
Thank you!
i think the man is still the villain even if he didn’t kill grey’s mother because he shot that other wolf even though it was about to leave. it is possible he thought they were still going to fight but grey took down three of them at the same time, so they probably could’ve gotten rid of the last one without killing them
I think there's no need for villains in this story. Mistakes were made, but not out of malice.
@@redravenriot3650 i get your point, there doesn't *need* to be a villain, but what i meant was the man was still in the wrong regardless of who killed the mother wolf because he killed the other wolf when it didn't need to be killed
@@thefakebluejay5394 I agree he was wrong, he made a mistake. He likely wanted to help, but in the end only did harm.
@@redravenriot3650 ye
Well sorry, I would have killed the other wolf too, unfortunately humans are not able to communicate properly with animals much less if they attacked us, that's just nature.
THE ABSOLUTE BETRAYAL AT THE END THERE. He should NOT have shot that wolf.
This is fantastic. It has a compelling story, and the animation is well done, too. I'd love to watch more of this and see what happens next
the fact that nobody seen this masterpiece yet
I don't know how my heart can recover from this-- 😭 I feel so sad for everyone, yes the man too, he messed up but he's not an evil villain and he obviously loved Grey 😭
I read some of the comments here and a lot of the people are saying that the hunter didn't kill Gry's mother which in truth I believe he did. This is the way I see it.
The hunter was out in the snow storm collecting wood, when the mother wolf attacked, he shot her and she ran off back to her den.
on his way back to his cabin, he heard Gry's cry and went to check it out. So he goes looking only to find gry crying over his dead mothers body.
not realizing that the wolf was a mother he felt sorry for what he had done, and for orphaning little gry.
He feeds Gray, and gray realizes that staying with the hunter is his best chance of servival.
at first it was a road for Gray to trust the man, knowing full well that he was a human.
but over time a bond formed between them, till trust soon blossomed with a new found friendshio between man and wolf.
but while out on a ride one day, the three wolves attack the man after he was knocked off his horse and Gry saved took on the three wolves by himself, and saved the man.
but as soon as the leader realized that Gray had bested him, he nods his approval and was going to run off back to his pack, only for the unter to go and shoot him right in the neck and right in front of Gray, who comes to the realization that his new friend was the one who had killed his mother.
fearing for his life Gray runs off into the woods, feeling betrayed.
this is a good Animation Short telling of Trust, Friendship, Bonding, and betrayle at its finest.
Gray had no choice but to trust the man as a put in order to servive,
months pass and a bond and friendship were boren,
only to lead to betrayal after the man shot the other wolf down, and he came to realize it was him who took his mother way.
now the only thing I had a slight problem with is the fact that the man didn't have a bow and Arrow on him when he went riding. it wasn't tied to his horse' saddle and his horse ran off after he was knocked off. there was never a Bow or Quiver shown at all when he fell. but the moment he shot the black wolf, he had one, and there would have been no time to just MAKE one, making a bow takes time.
this was the only thing that didn't make sense to me, but really it was a good story of Trust, Friendship, Bond and betrayl.
The animation of the head turning and the way the wolves head shaped reminds me a lot of South Park animals for some reason.
Not sure why it does but it does.
The running animation of the legs looks fantastic and realistic though. But the heads and eyes feel lost for me.
I think it uses a frame-by-frame and cutout animation mixture, probably they used more the cutout for their heads
I DIDNT EXPECT THAT TWIST ENDING!?!?!? AAAAH
/inhales/ … wtf sir?!
I like how he call her grey
This reminds me my childhood 😊😊 nice work
Interesting and unique story! The music and the soundtrack are beautiful! This is so underrated! I want as much people to see it as possible!
Awesome!
Outstanding! In real life, an unprovoked pack of wolves would not attack a man as shown here. And because there is greenery, it was not winter where a wolf might starve. But the video is excellent, as is the story. Yes, the man should NOT have killed that wolf with the arrow, but should have waited to see what it did. That part was shocking. And the little wolf running off after seeing what the man did was so poignant.
OH GEEZ THAT ENDING! THAT KNOCKED THE WIND OUT OF ME!
This was so awesome! Great job Vasi🔥🔥😊😊
Thank you so much 😁
Why did the man even kill that brown wolf with the scar? Grey had already fended him off & they were no longer in danger.
The wolf finally saw him for what he truly was
i dont blame the guy though
@@LinkfromTLOZ28 the wolves were leaving yet he still decided to shoot them..
@@theotheseaeagle he may have just thoughy it was gettin up to fight
Beautiful
Wow I like the ending
So good!
that was so sad. :(
who know if the wolf the man killed at the end had a wolf pup and the same thing would of happened to it like it happened to grey
The spoon slap got me, reminded me of boss baby. And fox and the hound
Loved the guy at first
Instantly hated him after he killed the wolf
It was completely unnecessary
Grey wilf is better without him now that shes grown
She can go be alpha
Looks like the last wolf and grey had some conversations with their eyes around 4:25 of the video, as if grey is telling the other wolf to leave, doesn't look like they have fought. And then the guy killing the last wolf, a little bit mixed up in the end.
Really enjoyed that.
Was he the one that killed the mother?
No I think he found her
Actually maybe yes
How to lose a friend for ever...

Hi vaslina? I animating your characters in Crazy war.
With everyone's characters saving multiverse too vaslina, with tankman and pico from newgrounds. Evil purple things killing them. Those evil purple invasion are super strong, and very powerful too. :'(
oh look the film on my name Grey
No brunnuhville music wss used ?
Doesn't this remind you a movie Wolfwalkers?
I don't blame the man for shooting that wolf. How would he be to know it wouldn't try to kill him again, or try to kill his wolf friend? The wolves shouldn't have attacked him.
noooooooo wolf are my fav animal 😓😓

You can't simply take a wild animal
Was the man the one who killed the pup's mother!??
The humans are cruel

Wow what a trash human
He had NO REASON to shoot that poor wolf
Then he had the audacity to expect Grey to just obey him. Pathetic.
no he's not
he probably thought the wolf would attack again
i dont blame him tbh, but i dont blame grey for leaving either
and besides he probably didnt understand the wolves body language
I don’t like sad animation. seems to be a thing these days. I think animation should uplift you.
Cute but there's no way it won those awards, garbage clickbait.
This is literally beautiful omg this def deservs way more likes and the concept of the person you trust turning out to be the type of people you hate is justt so deep❤🩹❤🩹
