My Terraria headcanon is that magic flows so freely about the world that it's practically like air. It permeates every lifeform and every biome, and when mixed with different essences leads to things like Corruption/Crimson or Hallow.
There's so much magic, in fact, that it leaks out into the atmosphere the same way our own does...before instantly solidifying and falling back to the world as fallen stars, explaining why they can be used to increase someone's Mana capacity.
As for the Minishark, I think that it uses an ammo recycling system (probably with parts illegally obtained by the Arms Dealer).
