    Trivia facts: Brewster's Millions was originally a 1902 novel written by George Barr McCutcheon where a man named Montgomery 'Monty' Brewster has to spend $1 million in one year to inherit millions more. There were a series of films about it which as follows:
    Brewster's Millions (1914) Based on the play of the same name where Brewster (Edward Abeles) has to spend $1 million in one year or less in order to inherit $7 million (considered a lost film)
    Brewster's Millions (1921) Brewster (Roscoe Arbuckle) has to spend $1 million in six months to inherit $4 million (lost film)
    Miss Brewster's Millions (1926) Polly Brewster (Bebe Daniels) has to spend $1 million in 30 days or less to inherit $5 million (lost film)
    Brewster's Millions (1935) British version where Jack Brewster (Jack Buchanan) has to spend 500,000 pounds sterling in six months to inherit six million pounds.
    Brewster's Millions (1945) Monty Brewster (Dennis O'Keefe) has to spend $1 million in 60 days or less to inherit $7 million.
    Brewster's Millions (1985) Monty Brewster (Richard Pryor) has to spend $30 million in 30 days to inherit $300 million.
    Bollywood versions:
    Maalamaal (1988) This Hindi-language version was released in India in 1988. The plot remains the same - spend 30 million Indian rupees in 30 days or less to earn 300 million rupees. It is an obvious scene-by-scene "Indianization" of the 1985 Richard Pryor film with some additional scenes and a few musical production numbers.
    Arunachalam (1997) An Indian Tamil-language film based also on the Brewster story, with significant differences from earlier versions, particularly in the first half. Many plotlines are interwoven, but the basic concept, spending 300 million rupees in 30 days to inherit 30 billion rupees, remains the same.

    "Marilyn? I could die in this room."
    Fun Fact: Princess Anne visited the set during filming as part of her U.S. tour.
    Lost In Adaptation Fact: This is the seventh movie adaptation of George Barr McCutcheon's 1902 novel. In earlier adaptations, the hero was required to spend only a million dollars.
    Historical Fact: In a few scenes, a train passes through the outfield of the stadium where the Bulls play. In the 1930s and 1940s, that was a common occurrence at ball parks used by teams in the Texas leagues.
    Political Science Fact: Brewster's (Richard Pryor) political party "None Of The Above" (NOTA) is used in jurisdictions or organizations to give a voter who opposes all choices on a ballot a chance to indicate their disapproval. The underlying principle is that legitimate consent requires the ability to withhold consent, and allowing voters to withhold their consent in an election to office is just like voting no on ballot questions.

    Remember that 30 million in 1985 is about 87 million today. It's MUCH harder then it sounds to spend that much when you:
    1. Aren't allowed to have anything to show for it
    2. Can't give it away
    3. Can't have help
    4. Can't destroy anything with value
    5. Must get fair value (can't purposely overpay)

    The best thing Richard Pryor ever said was when he was on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson long ago.
    Richard was done talking to Johnny, so he moved down a seat so the next guest could come on.
    The next guest was some elderly, very light-skinned and privileged woman (Bible Belt area), who was very proud of the "good old days" when everything was wonderful. She went on and on....saying how "We had this, we had that, we had....."
    Richard cut right in and added, "....and lynchings!" Johnny about soiled himself and the audience roared with laughter, while the privileged old woman gave him the classic Death Stare. 😆😆😆

    I love this movie, folks swear they could do it, but most of them didn't listen to all the rules. This would be hard, even today at 80 to 90 million. The advisor was right even the most frivilous spender would still accummulate assets.

    • @Inquiringmind0
      @Inquiringmind0 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What if you hired people to spend the money for you? You would be spending money on the people, and they would find more things for you to spend the money on.

    • @liamwarner5749
      @liamwarner5749 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Inquiringmind0 The big issue with that is the rule that you must get value for money. For instance he could hire the security guard because he's getting value in him being the head of security and the others value in they are protecting thirty million dollars. However hiring Jane to spend three million doesn't actually get you value for money. Not to mention the more you spread the spending out (if you can) the more odds one of them spends it on something that's an asset or does like his friend did and hides it away to help him. Assuming of course you don't have corrupt lawyers trying to make you fail as well.

    • @Inquiringmind0
      @Inquiringmind0 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamwarner5749 Yes, but couldn't you say that the people you are hiring are like a financial advisor? You are hiring people to find things that you want to spend your money on. It would be the equivalent of hiring a car broker to find you a vintage car, or an art dealer helping you find some great paintings. Only here, it would be experiences. The people's job would be to find experiences for you to spend money on.
      For example, if I was to take on this kind of challenge today, I would go spend the money on going to space. I think there was a billionaire, might have even been Jeff Bezos, who paid millions of dollars just to go up in space for like a day. I would just pay to go like 10 times in two weeks, and the money would be gone. This is the kind of experience I would hire the people to find for me if it was the early 80's - the equivalent of going to space.

    There should be a law called Brewster's Law that any ballot must contain a "None Of The Above" entry. Maybe then the candidates will concentrate on what matters to the people rather than just attacking the other party.

    What was AMAZING about Richard Pryor is that he was not a trained actor, he started out as a stand-up comedian and got a lucky break to star in a movie that led to more movies, yet he proved to be a great actor.

    I like to think about all the people he payed to do silly jobs. How the money went back into the community. Maybe the security guard was able to afford braces for his daughter or glasses for his son. Things like that make me love Brewster. I also like to think that he was very generous after he got the big money too. Thanks so much you guys! Great movie. I've loved it since childhood.

    This was a fun movie when it came out. It fulfilled everyone's fantasy. But it also spoke to all the corruption at the time. Especially within New York and politics.

    The lawyer was Darrin's boss on Bewitched. Mr. Larry Tate.
    No, BJ, Denny's, not IHOP.
    Warren was the dad, the Rev. Camden, on TV's 7th Heaven, as well as Captain Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
    You still need to react to John Candy in Stripes (1981) and Splash (1984).

    I love this movie, even in 2023 i still believe it is the best film of Richard Pryor. I have seen this many times over the years and never get tired of it. John Candy and rest of cast are great.

    What many overlook is he gets 30 million win or lose - they said nothing about giving any of that back - only he had to 'waste it' to get 300 million.
    I was impressed when I saw David White in this as one of the Legal Firm's partners as I knew him from Bewitched in the 60's on TV growing up. Larry Tate taught me a little about life at a young age. His ability to flip sides when money was involved is legend.

    See no Evil, Hear no Evil is another GREAT Richard Pryor film.
    Similar films are... "trading spaces", "arthur (the original)"..maybe "king ralph"...and that anne hathaway film haha

    I've watched this movie since I was a kid and I had never had an issue until that reporter said, "Montgomery Brewster just inherited $30 Million dollars, TAX FREE!!!"" Grown up me was just like, NOPE, TOTAL FANTASY!! Not a chance!! Government isn't giving up their taxes for your honky grandpa's game!!!! He more likely starts with $20M lol.

      Unless the uncle paid the tax on the 30 million before he got it because he was going to win 300 million and its 10% of it or whatever
