I spotted one of these in the Midlands, England yesterday, the wings beating so fast they couldn't be seen. It was beautiful! It loved my lavender flowers, I have never seen one before.

One flew into my house two nights ago and has just stayed here and has been real docile. The first night I left the door open so he could leave but he's still here! Now he's in my kitchen window I have the screen so he can go if he wants. He has really pretty markings.

I saw one in my garden 22 May 22 in Yapton near Arundel. So beautiful. The probiscus was long which confused me when I first spotted on the wall flowers that I have in the garden this year. I was not sure if it was just a very large bee - it was hovering that confused me. I feel privileged to have this visiting my garden. Just wish I could catch it on camera!

first saw one of these last summer out on my side patio in Council Bluffs, Iowa, kept thinking it was the oddest hummingbird for the longest time and trying to catch a still pic of it, loves me Cloeme flowers. Then it landed on the side of my house and i was like IT'S MOTHRA.... lol baby ones too later on in the summer, grew used to them but definitely startling the first time I realized was a moth and not a hummingbird, great video!

We have a few of these that lay their eggs on the Gardenia bush at the front of our house. One laid so many eggs once that the tree had no leaves left, and it's a good size too. Strange looking, but fascinating moths!

Nice filming! Saw the first ones in 1996, late august they were huge. They disapeared after 2001 and appeared back after 2005, but smaller. I learned later that the Macroglossum stellatarum (or Humming bird Hawk Moth) is a migrating day-flying moth from Northern Africa. Till then they had been known up to the south of the alps. The smaller ones seen today are born locally, north of the alps. They have been seen up to the southern Sweden. We babtised them UFIs (unidentified flying insects) :-)

One got in my house last night. I discovered it this morning, resting inside the window, leaning on the screen, as if catching the cool night air. So, at LEAST I got a great look at it. And, now, came here, to post. What a coool little insect. Amazing how it really LOOKS and moves like a hummer! Loves my Agastache flowers, that the hummers have now, finally, left behind. 09/05/13 ;( (slowly opened screen, and out he flew.) ;)

Wanted to see this video just to make sure I HAD seen a Hummingbird Hawk Moth. I had, it was just like this one. However the wings seem to be beating much more slowly in the film but I think this is due to technologies of video, like when you see a recording of a helicopter in flight and the rotors seem to be going slowly. Anyway, this WAS the moth I saw in my garden; I live in Hertfordshire.

I saw something that looks like this in my yard by a Rose of Sharon bush. Do these have dark brown and white strips. I thought it was a hummingbird, but not sure. Thought some kind of moth maybe. Couldn't see its face, basically body. It's wings were moving fast, didn't seem frightened of me. What else could it be?

dont be, they cant harm any living thing because moths, like butterflies only have sucking mouth parts that is only used for sucking goodies from plants. Compared to some insects like the mosquitoes, they also have sucking mouth part but it can penetrate through the skin of animal flesh to suck blood from their arteries... or so Ive learned! But!, after me taking up Entolomogy subject, my fear of insects including moth and beetles all flew away! so, yeah I think this might help your fear...

That was probably a hummingbird moth from the genus _Hemaris_, a genus endemic to the Americas. The moth in this video was a hummingbird hawk-moth from the genus _Macroglossum_, and is only native to Afro-Eurasia.

+Ronda Adgate : I had a butterfly bush a couple of years that would attract these amazing guys. Our WI winters are too severe for a butterfly bush to survive most of the time. I have all nectar rich perennials in my yard, but haven't seen one of these since my butterfly bush died off. I do live in the polluted city, tho.
