I saw one in my garden 22 May 22 in Yapton near Arundel. So beautiful. The probiscus was long which confused me when I first spotted on the wall flowers that I have in the garden this year. I was not sure if it was just a very large bee - it was hovering that confused me. I feel privileged to have this visiting my garden. Just wish I could catch it on camera!

Edgar Allan Poe never wrote "The Raven," he merely claimed it in a kind of 19th-century "identity theft." The poem's premiere was submitted anonymously to "American Review" under the pseudonym "---- Quarles" by the true author, Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Poe, a critic for the New York "Evening Mirror," finding the poem in an advance copy of "American Review," scooped Mathew in his own paper by two days. Mathew had shared a copy of "The Raven" with Poe in early 1842, so Poe had a handwritten copy in his possession. This enabled him to convince his editor that he had permission to scoop "American Review"--but he mysteriously left the "Mirror" shortly afterwards (suggesting that he may have been fired for lying about it). It is the height of absurdity that the editor of a newly-launched monthly literary magazine like the "Review," would have given a daily newspaper this permission. The real author was not in a position to reveal his identity because of his anti-slavery work and connection with the Underground Railroad, and hence could not publicly defend himself. My paper, "Evidence that Edgar Allan Poe Stole 'The Raven' from Mathew Franklin Whittier," can be downloaded from the following link, or it can be read by searching for the paper's title in Academia.edu. www.ial.goldthread.com/MFW_The_Raven.pdf

We have them in Hawaii! I didn't know that they also existed in other regions of the world. I thought they were our own endemic adaptations to the fact that we lack hummingbirds. Shame the music had to RUIN the video!

Wanted to see this video just to make sure I HAD seen a Hummingbird Hawk Moth. I had, it was just like this one. However the wings seem to be beating much more slowly in the film but I think this is due to technologies of video, like when you see a recording of a helicopter in flight and the rotors seem to be going slowly. Anyway, this WAS the moth I saw in my garden; I live in Hertfordshire.

One flew into my house two nights ago and has just stayed here and has been real docile. The first night I left the door open so he could leave but he's still here! Now he's in my kitchen window I have the screen so he can go if he wants. He has really pretty markings.

first saw one of these last summer out on my side patio in Council Bluffs, Iowa, kept thinking it was the oddest hummingbird for the longest time and trying to catch a still pic of it, loves me Cloeme flowers. Then it landed on the side of my house and i was like IT'S MOTHRA.... lol baby ones too later on in the summer, grew used to them but definitely startling the first time I realized was a moth and not a hummingbird, great video!

James Barnes.... I just bought a framed hummingbird moth from Camaroon..Tonight, while checking out this video, I figured I should point out - there's a semi famous Jimmy Barnes.. part of an Aussie band called Cold Chisel. They would have been a much better choice for the music for this video. Hope you listen and enjoy - start with Bow River ;)
