It really is. I can't stand seeing new lawns destroyed because the soil is so bad. It's sad the amount of work that needs to be done to a new lawn to help ot thrive.
I noticed this when they built two houses in my neighborhood. Mine was built 40 years ago but it was the same process when I saw them lay sod on top of crappy construction grade dirt that had been graded or anything it made complete sense. My entire yard has washed away, nothing but sand and clay after 3-4 inches. This video is going to bring my yard back to life!
Watched your prior video on black kow and play sand. Used it on a few problem areas in my St. Augustine lawn. Reapplied twice (probably didn’t apply enough first time.) Grass is coming in well and no needless resodding. Thanks!
I built a new house in the Houston area 2 1/2 years ago on 3/4 acre. Builder filled lot with sand / clay mix. I had 18 wheel truck load of St Augustine installed around the perimeter of the house ( about half the yard). Also had irrigation installed in the same area. I had 5 dump truck loads of real topsoil from a local pasture spread over the clay / sand mix and leveled for the rest of the yard. The area where the topsoil is leveled is well maintained common Bermuda. Appears to be some of the same issues with ST Augustine you have demonstrated in some of your videos (thin, lots of bares spots ) . Where the topsoil and Bermuda live i have supplemented volunteer Bermuda with seed common Bermuda. It does just fine even with Texas heat and no irrigation. Trying to figure a way to fix the ST Augustine. Maybe an experiment with the soil mix is in order? I actually saw my neighbor throw down a dozen bags of compost /manure mix on a bunch of bare spots . My situation is worse than his though.
I started putting this grass into my back yard but the soil is really dry and compact. I dont think it’s going to make it. If i go and mix it with a soil it can grow in should i be okay ?
Chad is 100% right. I have used both of these products and it works. The Command is kind of expensive……..I paid around $16 a bag so I was mixing the black cow and play sand. I would put it down and then go over it with a lawn leveler to smooth out any bumps or dips in the grass.
I’m in south Texas and a new home owner. St Augustine grass got laid out about 3 months ago but there’s also other types of grass in patches and some weeds. I also have an uneven lawn that’s quite bumpy. I was wondering what should deal with first, the bumpy lawn or weeds/different grass?
Is it normal for the Black Kow to have so many sticks and mostly compost in it? I was thinking more like mud in the past. I have a company do my lawn the past 8 months and had sod worms or something show up last month. St Augustine has like bald spots like a bald guys hair with a few hairs still there in some small areas. Will the sand and manure fill those areas back in. Its odd like the lawn guy missed a 3 foot section by 75 ft of the back of the yard. Looks brown and burnt.
Yes, it is. That's why it's good to mix it with sand. If the area is bare, it won't help. I'd the area is thin it will. You need existing grass in the area to fill back in.
I added a very thin layer of black Kow to mt st Augustine grass to help thicken up a dew areas and now those spots have weed galore, but weeds were never an issue in thise spots 😖. Any ideas why? my local nursery sells command, thats going to be my next go too.
Anywhere there is construction there's going to be compaction. I love black kow but I use their topsoil which is sandy/loam like to fill in spots in my yard. The only vice I have for their topsoil is that it does have weed seed in it.
Hello, I would like to ask how to add sand to the soil. Should I spread the sand directly on the soil? If you have a video show, I would be very grateful.
Great video! New construction is mostly a plot of land that has been cleared, stump ground to a minimum, fill dirt brought in (clay included or not) first 1-6” fill dirt depending on wether previous low area. Horrible for lawns/gardens. Soil needs to be amended in order to have success. It takes time. Sod/ seeded is only a temporary solution. Soil needs attention
Hi Chadd, I am in Saint Johns (Julington Creek) and need quite a few bags of Comand Lawn and Turf. Since you are from this area, do you know where I can get them? (I need around 15-20 bags.)
Should I be concerned about adding this mixture with sand to clay soil and it then turning cement like? I’ve seen a lot of opinions elsewhere and it is not advised. I’m in SE Texas.
@@bettercallchadd have excellent st Augustine grass. I am buying the soil. Just asking if you know of someone that can spread it and even it out. Sq ft of the yard is 7k
You are not the first person I have heard this from. I use comand so I haven't bought black kow in a little bit. But I have been hearing this from other people as well.
@bettercallchadd I'm in north Florida, and our builder is planning to lay our Saint Augustine on top of the reddish brown lot fill they used to elevate the lot. Is this a bad idea?
Not sure why but the bags of black cow now are just wood chips and chunks of random sticks and crap.. not very “soil” like. Wish it wasn’t this way since Scott’s soil isn’t any better.
I purchased four bags of black kow to level a small area and out of four bags three bags were useful ... and I had about an entire bag total of sticks and rocks ...very disappointing
The new construction clay situation is so frustrating and no one else online is talking about it.
Really appreciate your videos on this issue.

6:22 I’ve used this mixture on my St A and it works great!
It's an awesome mix.

Nice, I'm glad to hear!! It might take more than one application sometimes!!
Love the vidoes and would love to see your channel grow! You got this

These mixes work great. I'm glad they helped you in your lawn.

Is the red and white bag of black kow the same that’s the only one I run into
I added a very thin layer of black Kow to mt st Augustine grass to help thicken up a dew areas and now those spots have weed galore, but weeds were never an issue in thise spots 😖. Any ideas why? my local nursery sells command, thats going to be my next go too.

Yess!! I need to check that out!! The original black kow can have some seeds in it as well.

That's a video that goes over how to mix it.
What sand you recommended if it's store bought?
Play sand or leveling sand.

Absolutely!! This is happening everywhere. Everyone has does the soil has great success.
I used Comand on a dry spot my sprayer guy left me and a week later it was green. Sad part is I can't find Comand for residential purchase.
Mix black kow 1:1 with leveling sand. It’s the same formula as command per this channel.
Where in Jax can you buy Command soil?
It's very tough to find, unfortunately. That's why the black kow and sand mix is the best alternative.
Mulch masters
My first question is whats causing the soil to be "wet" as you described?
It's the bland of clay sand they use as well as compaction. All three of these factors cause the water to sit and not drain through as it should.
Hi Chadd,
I am in Saint Johns (Julington Creek) and need quite a few bags of Comand Lawn and Turf. Since you are from this area, do you know where I can get them? (I need around 15-20 bags.)
Site one and mulch masters has comand!!
Thank you so much!
John’s Nursery on 210 carries it also
How much comand would need to be added per 1k sq ft?
It depends on how rough the lawn is. I would say, on average, 1 yard per 1,000 sqft.
@bettercallchadd if it'd 1 yrd per 1000 sq ft how many bags of sand and compost of each would you need?
Should I be concerned about adding this mixture with sand to clay soil and it then turning cement like? I’ve seen a lot of opinions elsewhere and it is not advised. I’m in SE Texas.
I have never heard that being an issue.
Can you recommend a to top dress 7k sq ft in Tampa? Thx!
Are you asking how much soil?
@@bettercallchadd have excellent st Augustine grass. I am buying the soil. Just asking if you know of someone that can spread it and even it out. Sq ft of the yard is 7k
What a beast
Haha I appreciate that!!
LMAO!
Black Kow makes a Top Soil now, not sure where you can get it though.
Lowe’s carries it in my area.
I've never seen that!! I'll have to see where I can get it and do a review on it. Thanks for the information.
Chat is it me or has Black Cow gone down in quality. They put so much bark mulch in it now vs manure.
You are not the first person I have heard this from. I use comand so I haven't bought black kow in a little bit. But I have been hearing this from other people as well.
Explains why the st Augustine grass lawn all struggle in NE Texas. We have a one inch layer of topsoil and a mile deep of clay. 😂
Yepp!! That's definitely tough. Get some sandier soil in there as well as doing aerations in the springtime.
@bettercallchadd I'm in north Florida, and our builder is planning to lay our Saint Augustine on top of the reddish brown lot fill they used to elevate the lot. Is this a bad idea?
Black Kow has gotten expensive around here...$6.50 a bag.
Everything feels that way. Lol

Unfortunately, I am hearing this more and more often. That's said because it never used to be that bad.
