She's a virtually unknown MASTER of the piano and composer to boot. Saw her live a few times and she never failed to set the joint on fire. Amazing player...so much energy/ideas/technique. Super nice to talk to as well..I chatted with her at the Ottawa Jazz FEstival one year and she was thrilled at the response she got from a good sized crowd, many of them non jazz fans.
I saw her for the 1st time in the 80s at Bradley's w Cecil MC Bee , now among other things she s a master teacher at Berklee Boston...amazing Jazz player, she s a Giant
WOW! Thanks for this. Amazingly I stumbled upon her performing in San Francisco in '95 just diggin on her good feeling, humor and style. She still has great chops and soul! Thanks for sharing.
She's ridiculously talented. In about 1976 I was playing piano with a band, traveling the country. We a had a week off and we spent it bumming around NYC. I walked into this really crappy little bar in the Village, late one night, and there were about 6 customers - and she and a bass player were performing. No one was even paying attention. It was like a factory bar in Michigan. Tiny place - I asked her name and she kinda growled, "Joanne Brackeen". She's incredible.
I can"t believe she shrugged after her solo. Thank you for this clip- anybody remember Ancient Dynasty( with E.Gomez,Joe Henderson,Jack deJohnette)? Tappan Zee records
The one time I got to talk to Mulgrew Miller he was on tour with T.Williams and I had been on a recient Brakeen kick so I asked him what he thought about her. He said he knew her and liked her playing. He continued to think a bit and finally said she should relax into her ideas a bit more. I could tell he liked her.
Joanne is a great composer. She starts off in C and it's all dissonant and then.......suddenly there's clarity. She plays so hard that the keys need a rest after she plays. She's fantastic!
I met her the last May in Jazzfest in Puebla, México The only thing I have to say: She's an AMAZING PERSON, not just for her extraordinary way to play piano, also she is a beautiful human being
I remember that album. It was the first one I heard of her. Unfortunately, it's out of print. I e-mailed her and she actually personally e-mailed my back and told me so herself.
She's the best ! Congrats Joanne Brackeen and TRIO !
JoAnne Brackeen is an under appreciated genius. Her playing, her composing...I can't get enough.
The intensity of Tyner or Coltrane!

Her work with Stan Getz in the 70s, plus her solo stuff on Concord in the 90s brought me here. She's an amazing artist.

pure fire boy does she get all around the keyboard great left hand great time and she can really swing hard
Joan Brackeen is one of the best female pianist I ever heard!
+Rolf Westerberg in my opinion she s probably the best female Jazz pianist ever...
How about one of the best pianists in the world period. No gender, just TALENT
Always liked her she was able to hang with a very hard core crowd. Check out her composition "Einstein".
