A few things we’ve learned and would do differently next season:
    1. Remove plants at the first signs of wilt. This will help reduce the possibility of beetles spreading to other plants.
    2. Applying heavy mulch around the plants can discourage beetles from laying eggs.
    3. We learned of a method of using something called a “Trap Crop”. Essentially, you plant vegetation - (cucumbers, squash, pumpkins…etc) as a LURE for the beetles PRIOR to planting your cucumbers. Once the beetle numbers build up in these traps, treat the beetles with an effective pesticide to minimize future damage.
    4. Obviously… Keep the beetles away from the plant. One of the best methods to do this is by using a row cover EARLY in the season. (As soon as you plant) Keep in mind that it needs to be removed before the cucumbers start to flower.
    5. Be more vigilant. Checking for cucumber beetles - especially the striped beetle - EARLY in the season and OFTEN is vital.
A big thank you to Robins tiny homestead for your question. ❤️

Everything looks so nice, it’s a shame your cucumbers got wilt. Gave some great information about this, thanks. I could watch those pigs all day hilarious that one was having so much fun. Have a super Sunday, lisa@moneypit homestead

Thank you very much! We appreciate that! Yes, the pigs are very comical and super friendly. (Which makes it a little more difficult at the end of the year when it comes time to process. Hope you had an amazing weekend! Blessings! 🙏

Man oh man what is it about vine plants and bugs? Squash bugs, vine borers, cucumber beetles. All of my vine plants (squash/zucchini/cucumber/pumpkins) have just been slaughtered. And watching those pigs was a treat. I feel like that could be a toast or a blessing: "May You Be As Happy As A Hosed-Down Pig." Thanks for the update Jay!

I hear ya buddy! It’s crazy! I’ve been doing a lot of research (something I should have done in the beginning of the season) and I am now determined not to go through this ever again!

If borers are a major issue, try wrapping the base of the plant in tin foil. Tried it this year, had absolutely zero vine borers on the plants with foil, the ones without got 2-3 each. Still have to look for eggs above the foil line but it’s a lot easier when your head isn’t 2 inches from the ground.
