For those asking about charging the Raspberry Pi and iPad while they are connected, I've been testing the Inateck 9-in-1 hub that has a full downstream USB-C port and works great for this use case: th-cam.com/video/Au2Gtv-gQno/w-d-xo.html
Answering your questions: 1. Much prefer this way of displaying content rather than in a blog post. I think you provide enough details in your video descriptions that if people want to find out further information they can find it easily enough. 2. Would personally love more content for the Pi. I’ve just ordered my RPI4, so hope to start tinkering with it soon! Excellent video as always, as a new iPad Pro user this is all revolutionary to me!
Two questions for you all: 1. Would you prefer to see a roundup-style video like this as a blog post instead? 2. Do you want more Raspberry Pi content? I'm thinking Apple Home extensions, disk sharing, printer sharing etc. Let me know below!
Another vote for more rasberry pi content, especially the integration with iPad Pro, your workflow was a mind-blowing revelation to me when I saw it last week.
Please do a video on how you wrap a python program in docker and save to git. Seems like a very interesting way to make your programming projects mobile.
Keep ‘em coming! Nice videos! A blog post would be easier to follow when trying this on our own. I would like to see what else could be done with a Pi and iPad, especially if you find any solutions for older Thunderbolt iPads.
Reasons for the lightning issue if you were curious! The 2018 iPad Pros have a new feature which allows you to charge your phone directly from the device. This is a huge change coming from the lightning connector, which has always been extremely limited in power output (even some smaller mechanical keyboards require too much power to work on my 2nd gen iPad Pro. A workaround for this (which I believe was mentioned in the video) would be a battery bank that can provide at least 2ish amps at 5V, with wifi to communicate with the device.
Probably not the answer you want but for “1” I choose “both”! Blog post and video. And for “2” the answer is “yes please.” Could you do more on disk sharing? Is there a way to replicate the WD Wifi hard disk on the Pi for example? What about running Plex on the Pi and streaming to the iPad?
Would definitely love a blog post outlining the steps to get this set up working. I’m already looking to get a pie to get this set up for myself. I’m loving this content with the pie. I feel like you can’t find this content anywhere else on TH-cam. You truly got a unique perspective here Rob. Thanks for making this content.
Good stuff! 👍🏼 Would love to see more content combination of iPad pro + python + raspberry pi - beginner programmers like me are always looking to improve our skills. Just a thought. Your presentation skills and no nonsense attitude is just what people are looking for 🙂
You shouldn't need to add the the "sh" to the entry in "/etc/rc.local" but I had assumed that people would know to make the file executable with the command "chmod +x /root/usb.sh". I have now updated the instructions to include this.
Way to go the extra mile and a half with all of the questions. Most people wouldn't go that far. Your 1st video did it for me, but not everyone has the same chops. You got a sub for all of your hard work and quality content
As someone who does some coding in Python, has run into the limits of some of the current iOS Python environments, and uses Jupyter Notebook regularly, I was absolutely taken with your idea and would like to see more exploration in that direction.
Again, thanks for sharing this video! I actually ordered one Raspberry Pi since I saw your previous video and trying to set up at my leisure time. This video comes in time.:) I love data science and would like to do my Python hobby anytime anywhere with my favorite device - iPad Pro. Pls do share more Rapsberry Pi and Siri shortcut videos. Cheers!
8:50 If you're using an Android tablet, you could use the app Termux. It's a terminal emulator which comes with the APT package manager so you can install programming tools such as Clang and Perl. 11:38 It would be useful if you could use the iPad as a gateway, but that's such an obscure use-case that I know it'll never happen.
Thank you so much for helping people with their iPad pro tech specific stuff ... I wondered of the Pi could be used for the iPad , since I'm using the Pi a lot whether it was IoT stuff or streaming etc etc ... it's awesome to know that it could be used for the iPad as well P.S you've gained a new subscriber, from Saudi Arabia as well (:
I followed the directions in the links and it works like a charm. I got an active cooling case (fan + heat sinks) from Amazon. I’m using the Anker cables (the red Powerline+) for both the connection to power and connection to the Pi. I got the HyperDrive hub which is quite slick. The power cable is USB-C to USB-C, but the Pi connection is the USB 3.0 to USB-C. I originally didn’t know if this would work, but it’s fine. The only thing I haven’t gotten working is VNC; I get a “cannot display desktop right now” message. I’ll keep tinkering with it. Thanks for the videos! I never would have thought of it....
I've seen that weird error message before. For me it was because I hadn't set a resolution in raspi-config. Once I did that, everything started working again. Very odd.
Tech Craft Ooooh, yes! I forgot about that. You need to edit /boot/config.txt and set “hdmi_force_hotplug=1” “hdmi_group=2” and “hdmi_mode=46” Thanks for the reminder!
Magic ! Thanks very much for the follow up video. Following your first video - I was able to get my iPad Air to connect to a pi zero using the lightning to camera kit (which has a full Usb) and a full to micro cable. I had to use the usb on the pi zero and power it independently (either via power or a power bank). But it’s still a great solution and the pi zero weighs nothing (the cable and adaptor take the same amount of room). Ideally I’d like to share the internet from the iPad (ie just have it connected to WiFi for example - I don’t have an lte iPad)- but I’ll have a play with that as I am sure it’s possible. Great video again and thanks !
Thanks Mr. Tech Craft, I love the potential of the Raspberry Pi4. I have just bought one on Amazon and look forward to it arriving to install the software as you described... I used to use a BBC model B micro computer when I was a teen ager - that shows my age, and I think this falls inline with the exploration attitude from that era. All the best and keep up this informative and motivating channel. Kim J.
I knew most of the answer, but wow you were explaining so well. I have been using my pi 4 with my ipad since I saw your first video :) Thanks a lot for your help
Dear Rob, just discovered your videos today and I am a huge fan. Keep the great work up! I was wondering if you have thought about doing a step-by-step walk through video on how to set up the iPad Pro RPi setup. I would be super interested and believe others might as well. Have a great weekend.
man, you should have millions of followers your videos are great thank you!! I have a question would you use or have you checked out a Jetson Nano?? what do you think about that?
Hey Rob, these pi and your shortcuts videos are awesome. Great work! I have a question about your pi setup - you’re using powerline for the prompt on the pi, right? Is that the standard powerline config or have you tweaked it?
I just discovered your vids and I use my iPad for almost everything. It beats my laptop hands down. But the limitations that I have when working with Microsoft Office and the lack of storage frustrates me. I’m planning on going to grad school and I think with what your describing will help out incredibly. I’m going to get a new iPad and pursue the raspberry pi for more functionality.
have you checked out the magic keyboard for ipad and how that changes the charging situation? i am able to charge the ipad through the keyboard’s usb-c port and use the ipad’s to charge an iphone/airpods/etc so think that might solve the issue you spoke about. and the magic keyboard is pretty great for coding in my amateur experience...
Just got 4GB canakit pi with cooling fan, heatsinks, 64GB sd card, video cable, etc. i’m not affiliated in any way but have to say it’s awesome. The card comes with OS on it so piece of cake to get going. I did use my PC to run through the initial setup (connected the pi to my 4K monitor, wow), and then did Ben Hardill’s setup to get the cable link to iPad working.
I have been intrigued by this setup for sometime since I saw your first video but I cannot wrap my head around if it’s remotely convenient for me or not and my conclusion is “no”. I have the 2018 iPad Pro model too and I think this thing awoke everybody’s wet dream of having an ultraportable setup with no compromises but sadly iPadOS is locked AF, I have my beef too with the Files App (it doesn’t work, period) and doesn’t resemble its full feature parent, MacOS, if it would, even a little, I wouldn’t have the need for a laptop AT ALL, I’d buy directly a desktop rig. Now I get that this setup is good for your coding needs but in my case, I wouldn’t know where to start with the Pi machine but I’d like to do a similar setup with small windows NUC to have access to all the programms limited to Windows only.
I tried all the things you mentioned plus a USB-C hub to connect my Raspberry Pi 4 via its USB-C port directly to my iPad mini (5th gen) lightning port and I couldn't get it to work. It works fine if I run the Pi headless and connect the iPad to my Pi via my local network using a ssh client such as blink. I prefer using RPD for remote GUI access to the Pi, since the RDP protocol also supports audio, but you need to compile the pulseaudio xrdp modules on the Pi to get this to work. I am also finding not all RDP clients are equal. The Windows 10 remote desktop connection app works well, as does Microsoft's RDP app for iOS, but Microsoft latest Android app version has poor latency performance, worse than its previous version. I have yet to try the MacOS version of the RDP client. The Xtralogic RDP client for Chrome OS also works well. I have used VNC, but the free version doesn't come with audio support.
Based on your recommendation I picked up a pi 4 for for my iPad pro. Right of the bat ran into a few issues, had to buy a wired keyboard, USB C, a known issue, HDMI interference with WiFi, metal enclosure for cooling compounds WiFi issues. Not so convinced pi4 is a great accessory for iPad pro as you stated.
Using Hyperdrive's 2018 iPad Pro USB hub, I was able to plug the iPad into power while also connecting to the Pi over USB. This is handy for long sessions while away from a WiFi hotspot.
I love the RPi, but if I can get some kind of internet connection (even cellular tethering), mosh onto the home machine via Blink appears to be the easiest option. Nonetheless, Kudos for getting this to work! If Apple releases a low-end iPad with USB-C, I'd buy one to try this out! I only have an old iPad Pro with a lightning cable.
My preference is also to dial back home, but sometimes I just don't like to risk the bad connectivity. For a WiFi-only solution I've been using this setup: th-cam.com/video/YbvSS8MJm2s/w-d-xo.html
ahaha. I was trying the guide and I cannot believe I missed that ‘sh’ at the end .... now everything works 😅 tested with the usb-c cable that came with my pixel3
Can you please explain what you have connected exactly? I have an iPad pro with lightning port but I don't really understand. Isn't RJ45 Ethernet? And why do you connect Ethernet to the iPad? Thanks
@@SandwichMitGurke As Onnie Koski says below, there is a USB to lightning dongle that you can plug a USB/RJ-45 adapter into. The lightning port can not do networking directly like a USB-C port does, so the need for the above kludge. The USB to lightning dongle needs to be a model that has a power lightning input into it as the RJ-45 adapter will otherwise draw too much power and won't connect to the iPad/iPhone.
I had originally seen the first video and was amazed that I had not thought of using a Pi along with the iPad Pro, I have just recently gotten an iPad Pro myself and am looking forward to using it myself as a backend developer. I however have a question regarding text editors for the iPad Pro. I have been looking around on the App Store for the best editor that would support the capabilities I need with code completion for multiple languages (C-based, Java, Common Lisp, Swift, etc.) as well as use a terminal ssh client to access the Pi's command line to compile/run executables. I have been looking at the Buffer Editor and am about to purchase it for HEAVY development. I am curious if you have used this editor at all or at least heard of it, I haven't been able to find any reviews regarding the editor and to be honest it looks very good.
I haven’t see that one but I’ll get it because I’m trying to try them all. I’ve been using Kodex on the iPad directly but more often now I’m just using the vim that comes with the a-shell app
You mention when you code from iPad pro you connect to a desktop machine? What app do you use to do that? Can you connect even when your not at home over mobile internet?
I've been able to make an SSH Connection from my iPad 9.7" 2018 Model, using a lightning to USB adapter, followed by a usb to Ethernet adapter. That way the iPad has a wired connection to the Raspberry Pi over it's RJ-45 Port. It doesn't look particularly great, but it works. Atleast this way, I can use Wifi on the iPad simultaneously, so I can still browse the web while also connected to the Pi. I'm powering the Raspberry with a powerbank over it's USB-C Port, but in theory you could also use a PoE Injector to supply the Pi with electricity, but that would be even less portable, I think. In the end, you need to make sure that you find out the local IPv4 Address of your Pi, when it's connected to the iPad, to simplify this process you can assign it a hostname, so you just have to type in during the SSH setup, instead of having to find out the IP Address.
@@tech_craft Thanks! Your idea sounds pretty interesting. I've never connected to a raspberry over bluetooth, that would be really fascinating to see. By the way, do you know if there's a way to pass through the internet connection from the iPad to the raspberry over any of the previously mentioned connection methods? Because in some places it would just be easier to connect the iPad to the available wifi than the raspberry.
That's good question. I believe if you connected a hub with Power Delivery to powerbank, Pi and iPad you would be able to power both devices. Maybe Rob can test that.
Thanks so much! Was looking forward to this. Just a quick question, so I’ll need the newest RaspPi for this (4th gen)? I only have the 3B+. Will it work with that?
Nice video, thanks! +1 for the comment saying more Python! Also, you mentioned you did some data science. What can you reasonably do with such a setup? Some data exploration? Maybe light machine learning with being able to install sklearn on the Pi? Really curious on that, because I’m getting pretty frustrated with Juno not being able to get some machine learning libraries. A bit more technical I guess, but would love to hear your feedback! :)
Very little machine learning, but plenty of data preparation, data exploration and basic notebook creation. My rough process is that I'll take a random sample of the data, work on it on the Pi and then when I'm back connected to a bigger machine, I'll use the same code, but just switch in the bigger dataset. It's not perfect, but it's way better than being stuck unable to work.
I think when you use the pi with a ipad with lightning port, it requires additional power supply to make it work. I have tried to connect a mouse with an Bluetooth adapter to my ipad 6, turns out the set up works with additional power supply.
Many thanks for the good video documenting! I'm sorry to take your time, with something I should be able ot fix myself, but I'm wondering how you installed Jupyter Notebook on the Raspberry. I've given it a few tries through the Arm Conda ( latest ), but it ends up having trouble getting the ipython kernel going. Any help would be greatly appreciated for sure!
@@tech_craft many many thanks for that info. I've been scratching my head endlessly and banging it slightly too. Hope I can find some good way of reciprocating the info-generousity from your end. I've recommended your videos already, previously. Many thanks again in any event!
Hi ... First of all .. Thank you .. thank you so much for this idea .. I did not have ipad keyboard, or rpi4 .. had previous ones though ... but, I loved the idea that I can code anywhere ... specially that I needed that lately alot, while having only the ipad.. so I bough both. My worst nightmares after buying the keyboard and the rpi4 .. and getting everything working.. ssh vnc etc .. i could not get main programs that I use at work ... that has only 64 bit releases .. not arm ... still trying with chroot .. but so far .. I love it ... Thank you again.
It's absolutely possible to connect the Zero but my experience with it as a dev companion wasn't great. It's a little underpowered for working with a lot of languages.
Hi Tech Craft, many thanks for the great videos to the topic. I use my Raspberry Pi for demo purposes at customers as it is easier to carry than heavier alternatives. Apparently I have missed something. My Pi will not boot when I connect it to my iPad Pro 11. It works like described when I connect it to my Macbook Pro. Do I need to configure something on the iPad to enable more juice for the power-on?
Sounds like that might be the cable. If your Pi works from a wall socket with the cable, then it's not the cable, but if the cable doesn't work from the wall socket, then you'll need to switch. Tom's Hardware has this list of known working cables: www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/raspberry-pi-4-usb-c-cables-that-work,39869.html
Hi, firstly I'm loving the content on your channel, so please keep up the great quality of work. I got the RP4 working with the IPad Pro, so again thanks for the guide. I have a question though. I have many tools such as terraform that I would love to get working on the RP4, not seen anything explaining how to do this or if possible with the Rasbian image. So would it be possible to have a Ubuntu image on RP4 (which I've seen many videos working) connected to the IPad Pro in the same way as you've setup the the RP4 ?
For sure it is. I’m not sure if the instructions port _exactly_ across to Ubuntu, but it should be reasonably easy to figure out the differences. Terraform should absolutely run on the Pi. They have an ARM binary which should be an easy install. In general, Raspbian will run most things that you can find on Debian provided there is an ARM version available.
For the Raspberry pi 4's overheating issues. There is new firmware for the SoC that does a great job at mitigating the heating issues when under load. "apt install rpi-eeprom" run rpi-eeprom to confirm the firmware is up to date, and then reboot to actually make use of the new firmware. That should handle most temperature issues so that the fan is not really needed. As one of the ones that really would push for the surface over the ipad, and as a user who is primarily a Windows/Linux user vs your Mac/Linux background, I can understand your take on this. While I can make due in a mac environment if I need to, thanks to a fair amount of similarities it has, thanks to its BSD core, and general Unixyness at its heart. The same really can't be said going the other way around. Windows handles at its core, a lot differently, and a lot of things would need to be relearned to really become just as proficient in the environment. Though watching this and the previous video I have to say I am glad that you approach it from the direction of your investment into the ecosystem overtime, and not from the direction of some false superiority that I've seen from many others when proposed the same workflow change. My only counter argument is i feel a tech professional should be as fluent as possible in as many ecosystems as possible to maintain and raise their value as an asset as much as possible. Though I come from a repair background rather than a coding background. So, the more I can work with the better off I am. Mac's wear down just as much as PCs. :D
The updated firmware does seem to make a big impact. I have to say though, the aluminium case feels a bit sturdier so I’m not too unhappy at having upgraded. I doubt the fan case will ever actually get a proper use now. I’d love to understand Windows more than I do, but like most people I imagine, I’m sadly lacking in time!
@@tech_craft I'd likely learn Mac os more myself if it wasn't so cost prohibitive. Though from your side, a vm with windows on it would be enough to learn the os. Of course time allowing lol.
George Rounds lol indeed! I feel like barely have enough time to keep up with the tech I use already. Finding the balance between depth of understanding and breadth of understanding is an ongoing issue.
I think connect ipad -lighting to ethernet adapter-raspberry pi would work. I would try it out myself. However, since I am not that familiar with this kind of intense configuration nightmare, I would be appreciated if you can try it out. Thanks
Thank you for this video - a very nice wrap-up of some common questions. When it comes to Pi network connectivity, the best option would probably be to automatically use usb-c cable connection - but that may not be possible at all, or how? The second best option would maybe be to have a Shortcut where you could choose either iPad hotspot or then give ssid and pw for some WiFi. Maybe someone has developed such a script already?
@@tech_craft That actually sounds really good, thanks for the tip! Do you plan to make a follow-up for this "Answering your questions" video? This could well be a relevant topic in it. Especially wondering about how to configure it correctly so that it works with static IP address set to Pi4...
for ipad pro gen 2 12.9, i use wifi to ssh, and use the free apps "terminus" and "koder" to connect to my pi and do my basic cs homework. and i use "vnc viewer" app to use the pi in other basic uses. i'm not an expert but i get by and have fun learning that way.
Can you share a link? This is something I haven’t seen and google only shows kitchen towel 😂 In general, I’m not massively coupled to any setup beyond not wanting to lose my investment in learning how everything works.
@@tech_craft now i guess my question falls off after i read the specs myself. But you know apart from disks usage, this single tab defeats the purpose of carrying raspberry pi everywhere. Since it kind of is an ARM linux computer
Hi! Thanks for the tutorial. I have a question about VNCing on the iPad via Screens. The Pi doesn’t boot to the desktop when not connected to an HDMI device before powering up, so I have to connect my Pi to a screen every single time I want to VNC it to my iPad. Is there anyway to get around this? Like boot to Desktop no matter if an HDMI device is connected or not? Thanks!
Yes, you can set the pi to boot to a gui login or logged in as a chosen user. Use the raspi-config command line tool to enable this. I can access VNC using the realvnc client on the ipad but for some reason screens just wont work for me.
Hi and thanks so much for your video. Did you try powering the PI from a MacBook Pro USB-C? In theory should work but don't know yet, waiting for a bunch of cables but guess won't see them soon...
I apologise :) gave myself the answer with the last test. I tried with 3 or 4 USB-C to USB-C cables (the Apple power adaptor USB-C cable as well) and didn't work. Tried instead a USB-C to USB Adaptor and connected a USB to USB-C cable, Mr PI4 is up and running perfectly.
Hi there, thanks for your content it is excellent! I just managed to setup rasperbian lite with succes. One question however, how do you replicate the 'tilde' character with the Logitech keyboard or the iPad keyboard? Thanks a lot.
With the Logitech keyboard there is a tilde key next to the left shift. I don’t have the iPad keyboard to hand to check, but I don’t recall having a problem with it.
I’m wondering if the lightning based iPads would be able to connect to an RP using a powered USB hub. I still use my 10.5” iPad Pro. Just haven’t seen a need to pay the money for the newer iPads yet. And the lightning issues seem to be predominantly, if not entirely, due to power constraints. Do you think this will work?
I tried a powered hub and it didn't work. Maybe the hub didn't have enough power?! At this point, I think a different approach is needed for the Lightning-based iPads. One that has the Pi get power from one place with network connection handled differently.
Tech Craft So, you’re saying that the RP could draw enough power to work properly connected to the powered USB hub, but it still didn’t work with the iPad?
Brian Gardner yeah, I couldn’t get any further with it. I think WiFi is the key for older iPads, and somebody in the comments pointed me at an open source project that provides a really nice interface over the WiFi that I think simplifies that workflow enough for it to be widely useful. I’m going to see how far I get with it over the weekend and I’ll put out some material next week.
I've just got it to work with my Lightning 10.5" iPad + powered USB3 hub + Lightning USB3 Camera dongle. This is the USB3 hub I used - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07M5LMGXZ/ref=pe_3187911_189395841_TE_dp_1 - it is powered by MicroUSB.
I'm so grateful I discovered your previous vid and can ditch the laptop once and for all. I just love working on the iPad Pro but there's only so much I could do in terms of programming. Until now! Now I have a pi3 at home for remote and just finished setting up the pi4 to work on my commutes. Couldn't be happier and would love some more raspberry pi content from you.
You mentioned that your coding has you logging in remotely to another computer so that would need internet connectivity if you were to do on the go, or what am I missing?
will you do a video on how to use a old macbook as a server, then use the ipad pro to connect to the macbook to do python coding/using jupyter? i have a old macbook that i want to set up as a server
Thanks. Can you explain about configuring chrome cast or better Airplay on Pi? It could be a great connectivity device. I use miracast device with Airplay, but the build quality is awful.
This is cool to see the ipad use cases. I work in IT and have a windows laptop that sits at my desk. I have been using my personal iPad Pro for awhile now instead of my laptop for rdp sessions, user account management, and our office 365 stuff. Most things I can do I can use remotely like our servers and user pcs. Emailing and chat I can do on the ipad too. Doing any networking diagnosing is easy with a network troubleshooting app. The only thing I need my laptop for is managing our security system configurations (windows only software) and configuring switch ports and CLI stuff. If anyone knows of a way to do this on the ipad I would love to get informed lol
I think you should add a PiJuice or similar UPS hat to the setup. It will save you some time when you want to sent shutdown command to Pi and quickly unplug the cable.
To mention it here: You can also configure a WiFi-Connection via the 'raspi-config' command. Under Section 2 'Network Options', you can configure your WiFi's Country Code and the SSID + Password it should connect to. With that, you should not longer need your 'DashButton'-Application on your iPad to configure WiFi.
That’s an interesting challenge! Now you’ve got my wondering what’s possible. I’ll have a scout around to see if there is a way to capture HDMI input...
Currently I don't have a solution for charging the Pi while it's connected by cable to the iPad. I'm on the hunt for a hub that has an extra, powered USB-C hub. I'm also going to look to see if the network connection can flow over the USB-A ports instead and then power can be delivered to the Pi from a battery or similar.
@@tech_craft thank you for your reply ! I know this is an older video, but I'm just now working on setting up my raspberry pi to work with my iPad. Is there any way to access the localhost and ports of the raspberry pi through the iPad browser. For instance if I'm writing a react app on my pi and I run the development build on port 8000 could I some how navigate to that on the iPad browser?
Great videos, mate. Love to know if the lightning iPads (I have the original 10.5" Pro) can connect to the PI via a cable and do the same. Although I guess I can just connect to the PI via wi-fi (wi-fi hotspot on the Pi i mean, where there is no wi-fi network) and just need to ensure the Pi has power.
I still haven't managed to get Lightning working, but WiFi is a good option, and I'm working on a dual WiFif setup that has the Pi connected to the iPad and the Internet over WiFi
By the way, can I get the raspberry pi to get internet from the iPad through usb/network ... My current setup is, RPI is DHCP server, so it is the gateway for the iPad, and, iPad is providing internet to it, through WiFi .. so, that would consume much battery.. I think if there is a way to get iPad to provide internet to the usb through usb, and get rpi to use it, that would be great, and allows me to shut both wifi interfaces on rpi and ipad. I hope you have an answer for that. Thank you.
I haven't managed to get this to work - I discuss a little about this and the workarounds at 11:36. Ultimately, I think this is going to need some changes to the iPad so it share a connection over the wire and not just over WiFi or Bluetooth.
Is it possible to network the raspberry pi and the iPad using bluetooth. This would provide a consistent way to log into the pi from the iPad, the as was mentioned in the video, the pi can be configured to use the iPad as a hotspot or to use what ever wifi is available. I think my worry would be to lose a way to get into the pi if it in not configured to the same network as the iPad.
Vanderfleet Martin I believe Bluetooth is absolutely possible, I just haven’t managed to find the time to get it working yet. When I do, I’ll be sure to post an update.
After using the RPI and setting it up, and get my x86 apps to work, First, I love it, second, I found that battery life with continuous usage is around 6 hours.
The Pi Zero definitely supports USB OTG on the USB power port, but I’m not certain how well it will work adapting to USB-C. I have a Zero sitting on my desk to experiment with. I kind of hope it’s as easy as just using a USB-C to micro USB cable once the Pi Zero is configured.
Tech Craft sweet, I’ll have to do some research into it, 3D printing something for a pi zero would save a lot of space and you might be able to power it just with the iPad

Great insights! Thanks.
Thanks. I really appreciate the comments. Going to fire up the website very soon so I can start throwing out some blog posts.
Good stuff! 👍🏼
Would love to see more content combination of iPad pro + python + raspberry pi - beginner programmers like me are always looking to improve our skills. Just a thought. Your presentation skills and no nonsense attitude is just what people are looking for 🙂
I'd love to do that - stay tuned!
🙌🏽
You shouldn't need to add the the "sh" to the entry in "/etc/rc.local" but I had assumed that people would know to make the file executable with the command "chmod +x /root/usb.sh". I have now updated the instructions to include this.
Thanks Ben, and thanks for providing such awesome instructions for the setup.
Way to go the extra mile and a half with all of the questions. Most people wouldn't go that far. Your 1st video did it for me, but not everyone has the same chops. You got a sub for all of your hard work and quality content
Thanks. I really appreciate that. I wasn’t sure if this kind of video was even something that would be interesting but I’m glad that I did it.
I fully agree about the iPad-as-gateway, it would be a real boon.
I recently started using Termux on my Android tablet - really pleasant app.
Thank you so much for helping people with their iPad pro tech specific stuff ... I wondered of the Pi could be used for the iPad , since I'm using the Pi a lot whether it was IoT stuff or streaming etc etc ...
it's awesome to know that it could be used for the iPad as well
P.S you've gained a new subscriber, from Saudi Arabia as well (:
Would love to see your set up on how to connect to your machine back at home!
Cheers!
Hi , just found out about your channel and already have seen around 10 of your videos.
Great videos and great editing! Keep the great work.
I have been thinking about that. I think it would be a nice video to shoot.
Really enjoying your content. Very helpful and practical!
man, you should have millions of followers your videos are great thank you!!
Or is it something like oh-my-zsh with powerlevel9k/powerlevel10k?
Thank you so much for all your videos, they’re awesome and have helped a ton!
I just discovered your vids and I use my iPad for almost everything. It beats my laptop hands down. But the limitations that I have when working with Microsoft Office and the lack of storage frustrates me. I’m planning on going to grad school and I think with what your describing will help out incredibly. I’m going to get a new iPad and pursue the raspberry pi for more functionality.
have you checked out the magic keyboard for ipad and how that changes the charging situation? i am able to charge the ipad through the keyboard’s usb-c port and use the ipad’s to charge an iphone/airpods/etc so think that might solve the issue you spoke about. and the magic keyboard is pretty great for coding in my amateur experience...
more RPi thanks your video is fantastic very useful and understandable ..... great presentation
Hi, does this work for iPad Air 4? (With USB-C port just like the Pro)
This! Does it really work on iPad Air 4 too ?
Hi, do you mean HyperDrive 6-in-1 USB-C Hub ? How it's possible to do both things considering there is only 1 USB C port on this hub ?
I’m curious about your shortcuts, can you do a video showing them? And maybe programming them too :)
For sure. I do a regular video on Shortcuts every Sunday so I'll happily program that in.
Thanks! Great and useful video!
ahaha. I was trying the guide and I cannot believe I missed that ‘sh’ at the end .... now everything works 😅
tested with the usb-c cable that came with my pixel3
Is there a way to power the pi 4 while keeping it connected with the type c to the ipad? Powering with pins or maybe with a hub could work?
I have a hub that I’m due to test. Currently though I switch the Pi to WiFi if I need to power it separately.
@@tech_craft Thank you. Any update? Did you test it?
You had a great idea and your videos are a success:) tnx for sharing
iPad Pro standard usb c cable works ? Isn’t mentioned on both videos. .
I was able to connect to my iPad mini via RJ-45 to USB-network adapter plugged into powered lightning USB adapter.
Can you please explain what you have connected exactly? I have an iPad pro with lightning port but I don't really understand.
Isn't RJ45 Ethernet? And why do you connect Ethernet to the iPad?
Thanks
@@SandwichMitGurke there is a dongle that connects RJ45 to your lightning port.
Dear Rob, thank you so much for comprehensive guide and answering my question. you are great 👍
GREAT video, great series! If you have time, I would watch another one :-)
What about if you have a previous generation I Pad pro still with a lighting connector?
I haven't managed to get that working. I talk a bit about what I've tried at 7:46
I've been able to make an SSH Connection from my iPad 9.7" 2018 Model, using a lightning to USB adapter, followed by a usb to Ethernet adapter.
This is brilliant! I want to try something similar: power the Pi from a battery and then either use Bluetooth or direct WiFi
Because in some places it would just be easier to connect the iPad to the available wifi than the raspberry.
so when powering the pi via an external battery, is it still possible to keep it connected to the ipad via a dock?
That's good question. I believe if you connected a hub with Power Delivery to powerbank, Pi and iPad you would be able to power both devices. Maybe Rob can test that.
I haven't tried this yet, but it's on my list of things to experiment with.
Maaan, this changes everything
Thanks so much! Was looking forward to this. Just a quick question, so I’ll need the newest RaspPi for this (4th gen)? I only have the 3B+. Will it work with that?
I’m not totally sure. I don’t think it’s possible in exactly the same way but you can still use WiFi to talk to the Pi
Tech Craft ah ok! Guess this will work with a hotspot via the iPhone then too
Nice video, thanks!
@@tech_craft Thanks for the answer! Seems like all of that should be doable with pandas, matplotlib and numpy, in Juno then?
You certainly can but there are some things that I haven’t got in to Juno successfully like Seaborn. Anything depending on Scipy is out currently.
Is there a remote handheld for the IPadPro 12.9 that can scroll and laser point for pages?
Can I use this set up as a coding study tool till I get a proper linux or mac machine?
I used pip3 for installing on the Pi. Saves messing about with trying to get a version of Conda working.
@@tech_craft many many thanks for that info.
I've been scratching my head endlessly and banging it slightly too.
Hope I can find some good way of reciprocating the info-generousity from your end. I've recommended your videos already, previously.
Many thanks again in any event!
miska knapek It’s my pleasure!
Hey @Tech Craft is your Raspberry Pi overclocked?
Love your content! Would a Zero work as an iPad dev companion?
It's absolutely possible to connect the Zero but my experience with it as a dev companion wasn't great. It's a little underpowered for working with a lot of languages.
My ipad don't have type c port. can i use lighting to type c and get the job done...???
@@tech_craft Ok, Thanks, I assumed the cable works when using Pi MBP it would with Pi iPad. I have ordered one of the cables from Tom's Hardware list.
Thanks
WORKED!!! run dnsmasq on pi as DHCP server is the key!
I had something like this using SSH and wpa_cli. It worked pretty well, but I've totally replaced it with RaspAp now.
@@tech_craft That actually sounds really good, thanks for the tip! Do you plan to make a follow-up for this "Answering your questions" video? This could well be a relevant topic in it. Especially wondering about how to configure it correctly so that it works with static IP address set to Pi4...
Ari Kontiainen I certainly can put something together around that.
Tech Craft Excellent!! 👏
@@tech_craft Whenevery you're ready... ;)
for ipad pro gen 2 12.9, i use wifi to ssh, and use the free apps "terminus" and "koder" to connect to my pi and do my basic cs homework. and i use "vnc viewer" app to use the pi in other basic uses. i'm not an expert but i get by and have fun learning that way.
Nice setup!
Does this work on iPad Air 4 too ? Any updates ?
Would you drop this setup when PinePad comes out?
Can you share a link? This is something I haven’t seen and google only shows kitchen towel 😂
In general, I’m not massively coupled to any setup beyond not wanting to lose my investment in learning how everything works.
@@tech_craft www.pine64.org/pinetab/
Sorry, it was PineTab i was typing from my mind.
@@tech_craft now i guess my question falls off after i read the specs myself. But you know apart from disks usage, this single tab defeats the purpose of carrying raspberry pi everywhere. Since it kind of is an ARM linux computer
TH-cam replikvlt that’s really interesting. I’m definitely going to grab one.
Since you’ve mentioned video encoding - have you maybe tried/compare/considered the Nvidia Jetson Nano as a more GPU capable alternative to the Pi?
Would you recommend a RBPi for a non-terminalninja user?
Nic Box hi, how to boot into Desktop without plugging in the HDMI? Thanks!
Hey awesome video. Where do I start learning command line? Like for ssh etc. Thanks for your content.
There’s a great tutorial from Codecademy: www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-the-command-line
Man, that's incredible!!
Can you do a video on Jetson?
I have an I pad air 4 and a raspberry pi 3 would I be able to use my I pad as my display for raspberry pi ? And how to install shh
I’d like to try this with the Ubuntu build for the pi. Have you messed with this at all?
Hey! Awesome video but which usb cable did you buy? I’ve tried two and they both don’t seem to supply power.
I got the Anker Powerline+. You can find a list of supported cables here: www.tomshardware.com/news/raspberry-pi-4-usb-c-cables-that-work,39869.html
@@tech_craft Thanks! the Anker one worked for me.
You mentioned that your coding has you logging in remotely to another computer so that would need internet connectivity if you were to do on the go, or what am I missing?
That's my default workflow. The Pi I use as a backup if I can't log in, or when I'm doing coding for the Pi itself.
will you do a video on how to use a old macbook as a server, then use the ipad pro to connect to the macbook to do python coding/using jupyter? i have a old macbook that i want to set up as a server

This is great. Thank you
This is cool to see the ipad use cases.
What a great suggestion! I don't know why that hadn't occurred to me.
This should’ve been your first video on the Pi
True story! Much was learned doing this and the previous one.
Can you make a video recorder like small hd or atomos ninja.
Also anyway that you can make it ?
That’s an interesting challenge! Now you’ve got my wondering what’s possible. I’ll have a scout around to see if there is a way to capture HDMI input...
Sir I swear to god if you make it I will make a video specifically replicating your video and will also owe you one big time. Thanks for replying
are you connecting the iPad to pi thought USB-c as energy source only ?
I think it should work with a lightning iPad. But you should have a powered usb hub! Should Counter: 3
You think or u actually tried?
S4ndwichGurk3 think.
how do you charge the ipad while it's connected to the RPi4 ?
(I have looked for an adapter that would allow that but I haven't found it)
thanks !
maybe just connect the RPi4 to the usb 3 port of the usb c hub that you recommend and then charge the ipad through the usb c hub ?
or maybe get an usb c hub with a gigabit ethernet port and connect the RPi4 to that ethernet port and the RPi4 power input to another source ?
Currently I don't have a solution for charging the Pi while it's connected by cable to the iPad.
I'm on the hunt for a hub that has an extra, powered USB-C hub. I'm also going to look to see if the network connection can flow over the USB-A ports instead and then power can be delivered to the Pi from a battery or similar.
@@tech_craft thank you for your reply ! I am eager to get updates on your findings ! :)
in the meantime I stumbled upon the aukey cb-c44 usb c hub with 2 type c ports www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Adapter-Type-C-MacBook-ChromeBook/dp/B01MZ6B2AF ( or the CB-C48 ) but from the comments it doesn t seem to work well ...
on xda / androidcentral they are talking about the OSCOO FBA_OSC-CH-005 usb c hub www.amazon.com/OSCOO-Adapter-Charging-MacBook-Chromebook/dp/B01N0R1F1M/ref=cm_wl_huc_item but it doesn t seem to work so well either ...
Can i Code Java on the Raspberry Pie or on the ipad native?
Great videos, mate. Love to know if the lightning iPads (I have the original 10.5" Pro) can connect to the PI via a cable and do the same.
Although I guess I can just connect to the PI via wi-fi (wi-fi hotspot on the Pi i mean, where there is no wi-fi network) and just need to ensure the Pi has power.
I still haven't managed to get Lightning working, but WiFi is a good option, and I'm working on a dual WiFif setup that has the Pi connected to the iPad and the Internet over WiFi
What about a pi 3b+ and iPad 7th gen ? Will that be the same ? It was what I could afford
@@DiaaKasem0 6 hour is not bad at all.
Do you think that using a usb c to Zero Stem on a Pi Zero would work?
The Pi Zero definitely supports USB OTG on the USB power port, but I’m not certain how well it will work adapting to USB-C. I have a Zero sitting on my desk to experiment with. I kind of hope it’s as easy as just using a USB-C to micro USB cable once the Pi Zero is configured.
Tech Craft sweet, I’ll have to do some research into it, 3D printing something for a pi zero would save a lot of space and you might be able to power it just with the iPad
