- This is a short video explaining contour lines on a map. It is meant for those who have had a problem comprehending exactly what they show and how they actually depict the topography. Hopefully it does what it was meant to do.

this is actually good. I walked into seeing the old maps thinking that it is going to be boring but this man kept it brief without missing out anything. I really did not expect there to be a mountain model. I think this is what really makes this video stand out.

I learned to navigate before GPS back in the late 80's while in the infantry with the 3/75th but this is a GREAT training aid and very well done. If someone still can't grasp navigation after this, and some dirt time......well they should just stay on the hard pan in town. Keep up the great work.

Great video! The use of the training aids really made a huge difference. When I looked at the contour lines then watched you start to stack the mountain that proverbial light bulb went off. That really helps a person see how a flat two-dimensional image relates to a three-dimensional object in the real world.
That was great your a super good instructor. My trip to S.E. Asia 1960s had me learning real fast how to read a map this with the help of some good guys. Been many years since I used a map but you just snapped my memory back in place. Thank you much.

Someone has probably already mentioned it, but I would add the Knuckle Tracing Exercise. Best visualization I've ever seen for contours. All you need is a pen and two hands. And you can fist and flatten your hand a thousands times to visualize it.
