HaHaha!! That was me falling off my bike and almost taking out your camera! Sorry about that brother! The boy in Orange is my son. We were really thrilled to meet you! Thanks for everything Seth!
Richard Anderson yeah i rode a long time with high saddle but in a downhill park i forgot to lower it and in a jump i smashed my ass haha just wanted to keep you from this experience xDDD
헨드릭 Hendrik yeah, for sure brother! In truth I'm riding a cross country bike, I really need to get a propper trail bike. It's still so much fun though! 51 years old. but I'm out there giving it hell😊
Content like this is the main reason I like and subscribed to this channel. If only others could explain MTBing this way. It seems their main motive is showing off.
Yeah I was starting to get worried, but she proved me wrong too. After she started mountain biking on her own she somehow got twice as fast and twice as confident. Next time we'll get her to do the 28 foot step down at Santos!
This reminds me of my friends who are just getting into it. There is that awkward stage with some people. Once they pass it, if they do, it then becomes a comit for most obsticles.
You have to spend time on a bike when you`re a beginner. No matter how long your trips are, but RIDE. I were never able to do wheelies. After 7 months working as a bike messenger, riding all day, i suddenly were able to do wheelies without practicing. Just spend time on the bike!
So I’m nearly 40 years old and haven’t ridden a bike in years since I got in a pretty bad BMX accident. I have been looking into getting into mountain biking but question my ability and fitness since it has been so long. Seeing what a true beginner rider looks like is giving me the confidence to get out on my local trails.
I think some commenters are being unnecessarily harsh on the beginners. They aren't kids who ride with abandon and are a natural. They are adults who've never ridden off road.
So, Jake, what's your point? That they should buy crap bikes and never hope to improve much? I think they should buy what they want and can afford and build skills to the level of the bike. Have mercy.....no one gets to skip being new at something.
They could have atleast started on a cheaper bike. It appeared they've never riden a bike before, so why would they start on a bike that costs as much as their house? Like that one girl, she owned a really nice bike and she could barely ride up a hill. They should have atleast tried biking before they spent all their money.
howesfull8 yeah sure be new at something. Do something you have never done before. Yeah but don't turn up to a meet with a Canyon sender fully spec'd out when you cant even ride over a log. You know why because we are jealous; jealous of these people and their exuberant wealth when for the entirety of our lives we have been killing ourselves to go faster, do better on a piece of shit that we may never be able to upgrade from. So yeah go on, be new at things.
Seth, your videos of riding advanced trails are what peaked my interest initially in the world of mountain biking. Two weeks ago I watched one of your videos for the first time and yesterday I bought my first mountain bike! Just wanted to say thanks from Texas!
This video series really helped my wife and I get off the ground. She's already riding over stuff with ease just because of a few tips. Thanks for these videos!
I'd be pretty annoyed that some dude came up to me and botherd me trying to tell me how to do things when i didn't ask, then degrading them by calling them a quitter lol
@@dragon93092 exactly.. Thats not a nice thing to do.. He could be riding for his first time or second time ever on a mtb and some dude harassing you makes you want to quit the whole fking sport lol.. I don't know why, but I get goosebumps by watching this. I'm 27 years old and also always loved driving the bike. Now I but myself a really nice Mountainbike and got it Tubeless. I wanna train stuff like that too. Seeing people who also started somewhere growing in their progress also helps mentally kinda. Lisa made a really good job. Also you pushing her and motivating her was a real hero move. I liked that a lot. This is a really cool MTB Channel. Gonna advise it to friends. :)
I would love to see the series continue. It's so cool to see Lisa just trying again and again and making improvements and you giving hints on what you can do better. Yesterday I finally got my first Mountainbike. I ride bicycle since I am a child, then went on to motorcycles but just on the street, the same for bicycles. The last years I got a little bigger :D and after watching your videos over and over again I decided it is time for a new bike. Before mountain biking was so popular I was riding smaller jumps with no suspension bicycle for children. So there are things that are just natural to me (like standing up, or look at where you want to go and not at what you are afraid of ;) already saved my life a few times). But after years of pause and never really riding MTBs before I still need to learn some things and practice, practice, practice. - AND I probably will show Lisa trying to my wife; she said that I will never get her to ride like this - maybe Lisa will inspire here a bit.
Loved the video. I want to congratulate you for doing work like these we need more ppl like you. From Costa Rica Pura Vida come down when ever u want 😉
I appreciate you and your videos even more after seeing how thoughtful you were with the beginners. You are the kind of people that we need to make MTB even more common. I feel really honored to be your viewer. Great work!
This is a great series. I want to learn off road biking and find the amount of information overwhelming. This is a great series to break things down. Hoping I can get setup and start learning on the trails I have in my own wood lots. But this also has me wanting to find some official green trails in my area.
I wonder why I never feared any of these things, When I was a kid I would ride over the curbs and whenever my friends brought ramps out I would try to jump the highest. But I never feared falling or going fast down a steep section But everybody is different so I guess this is just me.
Leo Dickson If you observed the video there were teens who were having a struggle even with some small logs,Not everybody is comfortable with these things like this but nice try.
Its like anything some people have natural talents for certain things in life. Our brain chemistry and bodily coordination is different for everyone. For example, Im on the shorter side and I notice that I have more confidence than taller people, due to the fact short people don't go down hard. I know being short is not the only factor its just an example. I know tall people can shred like cheetahs too!
Part of that is cus you're a badass, the other part however is physics. When you're a kid you're smaller, meaning you're shorter and weigh less. Since adults tend to have more mass and height (more distance to accelerate with) there's more force upon their bodies when they fall. It genuinely hurts more to fall when you're an adult, more than you might think. The same spill a kid can take and walk away from, an adult could get seriously hurt, possibly break bones. There was an experiment done a long time ago (Newton's era I believe). A mouse falling from 8 stories will get a little shock but scurry away just fine. Upscale the math and we find that a human would splatter and an elephant would explode.
Great work. Your channel is a refreshing change. Ego mininum, info maximum entertainingly delivered without saturation overload or pretension. This series is fantastic. Ordered a Giant Fathom 2 not long ago and can't wait to get out and about in my local area. This series has really helped me prepare already. Thank you.
I appreciate you putting this video up. Some of us are older and new to trail riding and have some fears about getting over obstacle. This helped a lot in knowing how to maneuver you way through. I do appreciate you posting this.
Thank you Seth for making these videos, I am 12 and getting a specialized rockhopper for my birthday and these vids are getting me pumped up and ready for that bike
I remember finding this channel and specifically this series when i first searched how to mountain bike. That was 2 years ago. Im now jumping stuff and love the sport so much.
Nice job Lisa! So inspiring. I'm going on my first mountain bike ride this weekend in Sedona! I rented a bike but watching this makes me want to go right out and buy one :)
Always impressed when people can introduce and in turn make the path to our passions easier. This type of even headed training is what is needed to help people embrace our sport. Kudos.
I'm just going to say a few things to help maybe clear things up for those that take these basic skills for granted. I used to ride a little bmx and had a few Wal-Mart mountain bikes growing up. always jumping everything I could, pedaling fast and riding with no hands for the entire 10 blocks of my neighborhood and turning without hands and everything. I stopped riding when I was about 12-13 and just picked up mountain biking on trails for the first time in over a decade.. I'm 26 now. honestly you lose a lot of what you learned.. You feel way more off balance and things are more difficult. granted i have no problems standing up on my bike and I haven't eaten complete shit yet and I am trying things someone of my skill level probably shouldn't be but it really is tough. I think I just am confident since i used to be so comfortable but my skill and my mental ability are different. Just remember to encourage new riders and they will someday be great and laugh at these older videos of themselves but everyone's starting points are very different
I'm no professional mtn. biker (I'm only 14) but ever since I was little I knew how to ride over things even at high speeds. This video shows everything I've done over several years but on a couple minutes. Great video keep it up!
I rode BMX for years and when I first got into big bikes every time I went to go up a hill I stood up. The way to break it is to have good seat position and have it in your head that you’re going to sit down... sitting down while climbing is considerably more efficient
I got into mountain bike 5 months ago and your videos have made a difference thnx you 1 bike trek marlin 6 now I’m a proud owner of a chisel comp soon will get a full suspension bike
Am I missing something about that one root between the trees with the ramp down afterward? She does much more sketchy stuff immediately afterward in the video.
Probably because it built confidence to do stuff. I'm in an area with tons of rock gardens and it's amazing how clearing one sketchy obstacle sets you up to not hesitate on other stuff. And hesitation is usually what leads to the loss of momentum and control needed to clear obstacles.
No as the video stated they were beginners. It would be like you trying to play golf, snooker or something else you don't do. You wouldn't be eloquent or skilled if you were a beginner now would you??
Smug caucasoid No i wouldn't be skilled at something im a beginner at, but I definitely would and do laugh at myself for sucking at something im a beginner at. All about havin fun!
MtbFiend Guy are like tho. We can laugh at ourselves & not care to much. Women on the other hand..... They would be letting the air out of your tyres when you weren't looking as payback for laughing at them :)
Smug caucasoid Smug caucasoid True! Haha yea i was laughing at the crash on the first 6 seconds of the video lol I think if any guy in general laughed at a girl would get more than air out of the tires hahaha
Huge respect for all the participants and especially Lisa. I'm from the Netherlands, so riding a bicycle is second nature to me. I saw the struggles these people had but they kept trying and I respect that a lot. And for Lisa, it's great she found this much joy in riding a MTB. Seeing her clearing these drops and branches was really nice to see. As a new subscriber I hope to see more of these type of videos. Have a nice day.
I love this series, even if its old still has a good showing how can beginners can overcome their fear for some not so smooth surface to ride. And i am really happy for Lisa to do that. Good for her!!!
All of these people on new, nice full suspension bikes that can't even ride over some little logs and I'm over here struggling on an old beat up hardtail hitting jumps and crap lol.
We all got to start somewhere. Kudos to them for taking some lessons. I've been trail riding since I lost the training wheels and learned things the hard and painful way. Not everyone is lucky enough to gain that kind of experience at a young age. BTW, log stacks can still sketch me out sometimes.
Came early on this one! Seth, one question: My rear brake always runs out of the liquid when i do a wheelie, and than after a few minutes it goes back. But now it wont come back..... "What should i do? Will re bleeding it fix a problem?
Yes bleeding your brake will fix it. You have accidently found one of the ways a shop will test if you need your brakes bled, by raising the bars to force all the air in the system into the lever unit and thats why your brakes temporarily stop working well.
This is really great video. Your mixture of honesty about what is happening, commitment to help someone grow and joy you express when someone succeeds is just wonderful. As a beginner I learned a lot, thank you.
Brilliant! This is exactly what skills videos should be. People genuinely learning the skills and improving their riding and confidence. Also the line “makes you happy to be on a bike” is what it’s all about 👍
think *never standing up*, *never shifting weight*... front tire will absorb a lot of shock at teh cost of a lot of speed, rear tire with all the weight on it will take you to a standstill when hitting the root... and wehn you're standing still on a bike... you're going down... unless trackstand but that's a little above her current level I guess
Thank you for this series! I've been biking my whole life and have not seen such a well presented tutorial for beginners. Well done! I'm learning a ton- since I'm a roadie!
Thanks so much! I'm a new mountain biker and although I live in BC, Canada, I followed all your steps in various videos and now I am able to ride very fats and hit some jumps! Means a lot Seth!
Can anyone shine some light on the difficulty so many people have with standing up on the pedals and moving forward and backward? This is like THE NUMBER ONE thing required to ride even simple trails and it seems like tons of people really struggle with it. I'm trying to get some buddies into mtb riding and they're having the same problem. I'm struggling because I don't want to discourage them but it's like... got off the damn seat! Stand up! Lean back! Lean forward! And they just sit there bouncing around on top of the seat, no control. How can I help?
glide down a calm big hill and get them to just stand up. No weight shifthing just ass off the saddle. Once they accomplish it they will automatically start shifting their weight.
One can do it, maybe it's just a bad habit or they don't have the muscle memory to do it consistently. Get in a manual car and use your right foot to press the clutch (not moving obviously) and see how hard it is for your right foot to do it, then use your left foot on the gas, you'll feel like you've never driven a car before. Muscle memory play a massive part on everything, from drawing, to sports.
Some of the comments here are pathetic. Jeff Bezos easy to ridicule people who want to try something different. But I supose that makes you feel superior. At the age of 65 I have retired and am about to start mountain biking. And yes I will be buying a bike in the £700 range. I have worked for 50 years and I can afford it. I am also learning to play guitar. And before you talk about mid life crisis I am a six time Ironman finisher and have run sub 3 for the Marathon. My last marathon was the Mumbai Marathon at the age of 63. I have had a total knee replacement now and can't run anymore. I still backpack around India 4 months of the year. These videos are great and have inspired me to take to the trails. My advice to anyone contemplating a new skill or doing something different is to go for it.
if you have gotten into mountainbiking then id recommend also buying gear for most scenarios on the trail if you haven't. it sucks when you gotta walk back carrying ur bike because the wheel wont move
I know this is an old video but I really appreciate how Seth said “cooperate with your suspension”. That really helped me understand better what he is talking about when he says “timing”. This is what I love about Seth’s videos, he is so thorough and detailed in his instruction.
Bruh I'm more of an intermediate rider and I recently started bingeing this series so i can help myself explain to beginner riders better and i love the way seth teaches it. He puts everything in the easiest and most explainable way possible and i love it thank you seth.

i come from bmx and it feels werd to sit down not to stand up
i got used to it. So will you
julius j that's funny
julius j yeah like ive got into mountain biking from bmx and watching them sit down and get no speed makes me cringe soooooo much
julius j me too
I rode BMX for years and when I first got into big bikes every time I went to go up a hill I stood up. The way to break it is to have good seat position and have it in your head that you’re going to sit down... sitting down while climbing is considerably more efficient
I got into mountain bike 5 months ago and your videos have made a difference thnx you 1 bike trek marlin 6 now I’m a proud owner of a chisel comp soon will get a full suspension bike
please from the bottom of my heart continue the series as it is very good for beginners and inexperienced
And hesitation is usually what leads to the loss of momentum and control needed to clear obstacles.
yeah, you're missing the gopro effect
Yeah Lisa!
Anyone start laughing when the video started?
Haha yea i was laughing at the crash on the first 6 seconds of the video lol I think if any guy in general laughed at a girl would get more than air out of the tires hahaha
i think that crash was planned
Jeff Bezos reading this comment brings me back to elementary school. Lol. Those were the good old days! Did some stupid stuff.
Yeah right, I’ve been trail riding for like seven years and been cycling on two bikes. My current is a SCOTT Aspect 940 with some upgrades...
Melvin Vihagen what's your point?
We all got to start somewhere. Kudos to them for taking some lessons. I've been trail riding since I lost the training wheels and learned things the hard and painful way. Not everyone is lucky enough to gain that kind of experience at a young age. BTW, log stacks can still sketch me out sometimes.
Jeff Bezos I’m out here trail riding on bmx bikes
When will the series continue
Came early on this one! Seth, one question: My rear brake always runs out of the liquid when i do a wheelie, and than after a few minutes it goes back. But now it wont come back..... "What should i do? Will re bleeding it fix a problem?
This sounds like a really weird problem...it only happens during a wheelie? I'd say it would need a bleed at the absolute least!
Every time i bring the front wheel up? Maybe there is air inside which causes that???? IIduno! I have been riding like that for 2 months!
Also the line “makes you happy to be on a bike” is what it’s all about 👍
Wheres the next one
Are there plans to continue this series?
Still waiting for the next chapter
I have clipped a section of this video and I watch it as a motivation before going to the trail whenever I remember. It has been a good motivation.
Watching Lisa clear that root-ramp was great! I was cheering for her each attempt.
And watching your encouragement was great too.
Is this series ever coming back?
In Bulgaria curbs are like the big logs.
In Romania as well. Just bunnyhop those sons of bitches. :))
Hey Seth!!
Bachz hey!
Watching beginners overcome an obstacle for the first time no matter how small is so satisfying to watch. Specially if you're the one teaching them :)
This sport needs more people like you. Thanks.
What happened to this series Seth? Lisa and you both quit it? :(
the logs are one thing but I cant understand how those roots could challenge anyone
She never seems to be going fast enough to clear stuff and she does not stand up when needed.
Abishai Streeter It makes me want to ride it to see what the big deal is all about.
Eamon Kelly same
think *never standing up*, *never shifting weight*... front tire will absorb a lot of shock at teh cost of a lot of speed, rear tire with all the weight on it will take you to a standstill when hitting the root... and wehn you're standing still on a bike... you're going down... unless trackstand but that's a little above her current level I guess
Abishai Streeter oh dear. If a root hits you unprepared you better hold for dear life.
"you're a badass if you keep trying"
Seth you're an og
Thank you for this series! I've been biking my whole life and have not seen such a well presented tutorial for beginners. Well done! I'm learning a ton- since I'm a roadie!
3 years later and I just got my first mountain bike and I can't wait to hit JD park! Your channel inspired me!
whats the bet that lisa does redbull rampage now
teach her how to wheelie next?
this girl really didnt want to fall lol
As a person who teach beginners to mountainbike was this really rewarding to watch. We ge through the exact same struggle and get the same reward
My advice to anyone contemplating a new skill or doing something different is to go for it.
if you have gotten into mountainbiking then id recommend also buying gear for most scenarios on the trail if you haven't. it sucks when you gotta walk back carrying ur bike because the wheel wont move
lol talking about wanting to be superior.
What happen to lisa?
ded
I know this is an old video but I really appreciate how Seth said “cooperate with your suspension”. That really helped me understand better what he is talking about when he says “timing”. This is what I love about Seth’s videos, he is so thorough and detailed in his instruction.
Bruh I'm more of an intermediate rider and I recently started bingeing this series so i can help myself explain to beginner riders better and i love the way seth teaches it. He puts everything in the easiest and most explainable way possible and i love it thank you seth.
