This episode is also relevant to those who use gas in their campervans in order to comply with regulations in most, if not all states. I learned heaps thanks to Kevin. Good questions too!
Ziggy have released a caravan specific model with the flame out protection. I’ve seen comments online that Weber are in the process of making an upgrade / retrofit for the Q series to allow them to be connected to caravans.
Most definitely, I’ve put off a purchase until it gets sorted. I didn’t like the Ziggy nomad hood setup and the grill area shape. Weber is nice but expensive. Gasmate’s look good but no flame out device.
I'm looking forward to this. The subject will relate to my ute build as well. I have pumps, tanks and a gas hot water system (EDIT: and a gas stove) to set up on my ute.
My better half and I have a 12 month old forward fold camper van. I had extra gas bayonets fitted at the front and back so I can Bbq with my newish Beefeater Bugg. Q. It has no flame out system is it still legal to use it? I never bbq under the annexe as the flame grilling a steak makes too much fatty smoke.
I'm not entirely sure of where this all sits legally, Peter, and I'm in no position to provide solid advice. My understanding is that while a standard is not a law, if something was to happen on the basis of you not following the standard then it would be mud on your face, and that could get messy if there is a third party involved. ~ Ben
Holy cow! That caravan explosion story is FULL. ON!!! Scary! They’re so lucky they came out of it that well!
Yeh, very lucky. ~ Ben

Ziggy Nomad has the flame out protection. Still no updates for the weber retro fit solution.
I've heard that Weber are making changes, it would be in their best interest to make sure their products can be used by caravanners. ~ Ben

1lt of liquid lpg makes 270lt of vapour with a flammability range between 2 % - 9%
Thanks, Wandering Wes, gives you some perspective on how quickly an LPG leak can turn into a large flammable ball of gas. ~ Ben
gas is heavier than air so it settles reducing the chance of you smelling it
sorry i posted that before the explosion story
Pretty scary story, the people inside were very lucky. ~ Ben
