Applying Leg Wraps - Standing wraps and Polo wraps

- In this video we are going to review a basic skill in horse management - leg wraps! I will show you how to apply standing wraps, which are used to protect an injury, prevent stocking up, or support a horse's legs during shipping. I will talk about and demonstrate how and when to use polo wraps, plus the differences between the two types of wrap material.
This videos is perfect to explain to a greenhorn like myself the difference between wraps. I hate asking people at the stable because I often feel like I’m being judged. Thank you so much. I am also an older rider getting back after a long absence. Was not taught any of this years ago.

I love all of your videos. I have learned so much from you . Being an older rider,I am very self conscious and have had some pretty nasty instructors. I gave up taking lessons and almost on riding. I have learned more from your videos then any of my former teacher without feeling like I am being talked down to.
Ellie Mathews I know this is an old comment, but I just wanted to encourage you to keep going with trying to find a decent place to take lessons! I was in the same boat as you until a month ago. I took a year off lessons due to multiple reasons, but I've finally found an instructor who I love and who loves to teach everything to everyone! This is my 7th or 8th barn and too many instructors to count in 13 years of riding and I've finally found my spot in the horse world.

Ellie Mathews I am exactly like you plus I’m a bit overweight and out of shape. 😂 I’m not perfect or claim to be but every single “trainer” instructor has different ways or methods I want to say. It blows my mind the way most people do things.

Tendons need way more than wraping

Excellent video; yesterday I accidentally used a non-stretchy wrap on my lesson horse guy, and it came undone while riding. Luckily he didn't trip. Now I know what to do better.
How do you wrap a horses hind leg and which wrap (the easiest) should i use for a permanent pulled tendon???
There is an exception. I use polo wraps with leg quilts for injuries where the horse is permitted exercise in a paddock. The leg quilts are necessary for cushioning and to absorb any oozing coming from the wound that goes outside the gauze, and the polo wraps grip better than the standing wraps.
Thanks sweet heart! I knew i was right when i talk to a friend the diferences between both of them. She insists that i should put that white wrapping with the polo too when i was riding the horse
Thanks for the video! I noticed that the polo wrap ended with the velcro across the tendons. Is this an issue at all? A barn owner told me that the velcro should be across the bone instead of the tendons, because it could constrict or damage the tendons. Have you ever heard of this? I'm hoping this is not true since it takes me quite a few tries to get the polos to wrap so the velcro is not over the tendons.
The only problem with where the velcro ends is that the horse can accidentally take off with their own legs/hooves

Hi I really liked the video my polo wraps keep getting loose and wrinkly at the the top and then it don't look right but the rest is perfect o and can you wear polo wraps in the trailer.

Is not if you need or not. Is if you want to. Anyway to provide injury is recomendable for your horse. But i will say that if you do hard work with trotong on hard ground, jumping or shortaf you should put it to your horse

Can you were polo wraps in the trailer? And I am a beginner at this and would not want to injury my horses leg is it better that I just not do it

It seems like you are saying to snug the wrap against the tendon. The other videos I've seen says not to pull against the tendon, but to snug the wrap as it goes across the cannon bone. Which is correct?
The tendon. We wanna give suport there. If you pull the bone it wont aply the preasure correctly and can interfuse with the correct circulation of the blood
You NEVER want to pull across the tendons at the back of the leg.That could cause a major bow to the tendon. If you are going to pull it snug, you should always pull across the front.
Pressure on the bone always, never on the tendon, can cause a bandage-induced injury.
Can I use a polo wrap on the outside of the standing wrap?
no, on the outside of the pillows/quilts you want to use the standing wraps like she uses in the video or a wrap called a track wrap which are essentially the same thing.

Don't wrap your horses knees. They won't be able to bend it very well while exercising! Also don't cover their ankles if your exercising.
