Yet when I googled ‘how long does a potato battery last’ the answer was ‘until it goes bad’ but now I’m confused, because you can’t make energy out of nothing, but the potatoes energy isn’t what powers the LED so.... when does the battery go bad, assuming the potato is immortal? Does the metal rot? Where’s the energy coming from? What’s going on here?
As a student I learnt alkaline batteries consume themselves while providing current. After some time being used they become pretty much physically empty. So I guess after a while the potato runs out of the acid inside that was necessary for the reaction to happen. There must be more chemicals going on but I'm not well informed about those. There is a chemistry practical where you use metals and metal solutions to make a battery using an electrically conductive salt bridge to connect the two metals. My guess is the fluid in the potato here acts as the salt bridge.
For real long run time easy LED lighting google this: "Sims dead cell candle". For 2 dollars you can run a LED for about 8 weeks. It will also run just fine on used D cells from one of those touchless paper towel machines (free batteries). Plus does not smell after a month.

It's complicated. Eventually, the metals will no longer create a current, but usually the potato rots before the metals themselves lose the current.
