The lyrics aren't exactly fantasy, but rather metaphor. Something that the late great Ronnie James Dio excelled in. This song is from 1992, and Ronnie’s second tenure in Black Sabbath out of three - though for the third tenure, lasting until Ronnie’s death in 2010, they went by the name Heaven and Hell since the Ozzy Osbourne-fronted version of Black Sabbath was also active at the time. Many tend to forget that the Godfathers of doom also had an uptempo side to them. But they most certainly did! Their most famous song, “Paranoid”, is a prime example. “Time machine” is today arguably the best remembered song from Black Sabbath’s “Dehumanizer” album, since it appeared on the very successful “Wayne’s world” soundtrack. However, the lead single off that album, “TV crimes”, is an even faster and even better track. It was, however, a victim of unfortunate timing. Its lyrics are a tale of televangelist hypocrisy, so the song was overshadowed by the Genesis hit single “Jesus he knows me” which was covering the same theme and released at the same time. Other examples of uptempo classics by Black Sabbath include - I have picked one with each of the five singers who ever appeared on albums with the band - “Symptom of the universe” (Ozzy Osbourne), “Neon knights” (Ronnie James Dio), “Digital bitch” (Ian Gillan), “Turn to stone” (Glenn Hughes) and “I witness” (Tony Martin).
I took it to mean that everyone lives in a time machine, it just moves forward one second at a time. But like having an actual time machine, you can choose where we you want to go and who you want to be. Just that your possibilities are endless, just have to go make it happen.
I got used to the version that was on the Wayne's World soundtrack, which is a bit different. Still my favorite on the album, and one of my favorites with Dio.
This is a great album. One of my faves in the Black Sabbath catalog.. RIP Dio
Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
From this same album the song "I" is the best tune on Dehuminizer, and may be the hardest nastiest song from Sabbath since the mid 70s.

Same album has what I consider one of Black Sabbath Dio era songs. It is simply called "I". Powerful driving song, definitely a great listen.
There darkest, heaviest album. Love it! The guitar tone, compared to the others, is incredible!! A truly underrated album! 🤘🤘🎸🎸❤️
still feels almost like their "happy" album compared to the later "The Devil You Know" (band renamed to "Heaven & Hell", Mrs. Osbourne's fault).
