The world is crazy. I'm watching a DW Griffiths film in 2021 on a screen 5" wide in my living room. He wouldn't believe it if he saw it. Great performance all around. Incredible how performance conveys plot without dialog

For trying to summarize Tolstoi's RESURRECTION in twelve minutes, not bad at all! Coincidentally, I read Elizabeth Hardwick's essay "Seduction and Betrayal" only last week, in which she discusses (among others) the characters and plots of this novel. Griffith omitted (probably for obvious reasons) the whole subplot about her pregnancy with the Prince's child and the death of the child at her hands. Florence Lawrence is great, as always, but Arthur V. Johnson comes across as an actor too wedded to stage movement. Thanks for the continued upload of these Griffith shorts!

Thanks for providing your synopsis. It would have been helpful though if the film included subtitles or gave some indication as to the reason for the large plot gap for why the peasant girl was hitting the prince.

This movie inspired Victor Frankl, mentioned in his classic book

No, not the 1909 Griffith’s version, it was the 1927 film by Edwin Carewe inspired Frankl due to it being more well known in his day. Unfortunately despite its popularity, the 1927 version is considered a lost movie which is extremely sad, there’s no known copies of it.

Just finished reading the novel. It’s quite epic and stirring. This is it , in a nutshell but the subject of the novel is the hero’s conscience. It should really be called Redemption which said hero ultimately finds in the gospels. No, I’m not proselytizing but I have a hunch Tolstoy was.

I'm sorry, but these guys really need music. Carl Davis's if we can make that work.
