Thank you for making this video. I turn 62 next week......filed to get social security this is money I earned, I want it back hope to be in phillipines soon
What if you are already on ssdi before you go to the Philippines? I always receive my check on the 3rd . I never understood when people talk about getting there check depending on the day there birthday is on.
People that get paid on different days during the month is only if your address with the SSA is in the US and depends on the day of the month you were born and is only for regular retirement SS. If address is the Philippines then your paid on the 3rd for SS and SSDI.
I seen other vloggers that say its best to setup ss in the us, and make sure 1 or 2 direct deposits go through, then the only thing to deal with the proof of life form yearly, does that sound right?
A lot of people say that, but they probably never had it set up in the Philippines also. You never here anyone that has direct deposit in the Philippines have a problem with SS. But as I away say, you must do what feels right for yourself
@@piratecovephilippines4711 Aloha, I have a question I can't seem to find an answer, so I thought I'd ask you as you obviously know more than anyone, my question is about the proof of life form that social security sends out yearly or every couple of years, would you know if a virtual mailbox would work for that? My concern is I've read that mail in the Philippines is hit and miss, and if social security doesn't get a response for that letter within a few months they stop social security payments...any advice is appreciated, thank you
My mother has a SSA in Virginia my mom got sick 2002 and she died here in Philippines 2003 . How to get survivor benefits in SSA ? What am I going to do .I didn't receive anything from social security in Virginia USA
Just my opinion, I would not recommend direct deposit to any Phils bank. The problems I've had with the biggest bank here, BDO, nixes any trust I would have with direct deposit to them. I personally have my SS deposited with Wells Fargo, NA. Then transfer online what I want thru their partnership program with certain Phils banks. Been doing it for 5 years now & no problems with Wells Fargo, only issues have been with BDO
I received a email from Social Security in Manila. They will not get involved before your benefits are stop. Also I was told that I'm not to send it to America with FedX are LBC..im supposed to send it by regular mail. I was told I could not send it by fed X in a package and then have a family member open it and put it in the mail. Seems crazy but that's what the email said...
That's correct what they said, the SSA office in Manila only will deal with it if payments are stoped You must send it to the US office in the US and they must receive it before the end of the year. I sent mine Philpost registered and had no problem. However if I had received the second one and time was short I would send FedEx or LBC , they have a back up address for that as FedEx and others won't deliver to a PO box.
Here is the back up address. Social Security Administration Data Operations Center Att: SSA-7162 Process 1150 E. Mountain Drive Wilkes- Barre Pa. 18767-7162
You cannot use Medicare in the Philippines. I will op out of part B as the wife and I both can get a good insurance plan with that money. Thanks for watching
You just file online with your Philippines address, after you submit the application the SS office in Manila will contact you and set up a phone interview. It was really easy, but it takes a few month before it starts.
If I'm not mistaken, people who're about to retire can also apply for the Social security card. And they can easily check their balance online. (Although it's a bit risky since it can get lost or stolen).
Here's another option people can consider. It's what I'm doing.I'm retiring next April (65) & moving there to Bohol.Find an international bank near you in the US,that has branches in the PI.I just recently opened an account with Citibank where I'll have my SS direct deposited.Citibank has a big branch in Cebu, which is a 2hr ferry ride from Bohol and where I'll be flying into when I come.Once I get there I can go to the branch in Cebu, & have a debit card issued from that branch off my account.MY SS will be deposited to my account here, which I'll have access to through the branch there.By the time I leave next May(or early June) I should have about 75K in my account with what I've already saved & will save between now & then.Once I get there I'll be taking probably about 50K of that & depositing it in a Philippine bank.I'll be applying for a SRRV (special resident retirement Visa after I get there. One of the requirements is to deposit at least 10K in a Philippine bank. With a debit card from the branch in Cebu,I'll have access to & be able to draw my monthly SS from my Citibank account for monthly living expenses. The rest will be a security blanket. Also for Buying a vehicle,furniture,exct... I also have my online portfolio which will be connected to my Citibank account.I'll be selling off some of my holdings from time to time & using the proceeds for trips to other places in the Philippines & SE Asia,
I am on Social Security and still in the U.S. When I move to the Philippines I am sure my Medicare will not work there and I will have to get insurance there. My question is will S. S. put the money for payment back in my check for the Medicare insurance?
Since you have made the Philippines your full time home, did you keep any bank accounts and or retirement account open in the US and just transfer funds when needed to your bank in thr Philippines?
No , I closed all my accounts after about 18 months of moving here. I had no plans to return to the US and haven't been back in 10 years now. My pension and SS are direct deposited to my Philippines bank and have never had any problems doing so.
Hi sir, good day! I am a Filipina living in Philippines and married an ex military 3years now, my husband wants to claim me as his beneficiary in his military but they said I need SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER(SSN) Now my husband called the fbu manila but then they seems don't have idea about it, they said I'm not eligibLE for social security number, the fbu manila denied it.. now we send a proof that I eally need a SSN for me to claim me as his beneficiary
You must get the ITIN # , but it's very hard to get and is often not given. Best to get in touch with the veterans association here in the Philippines as they may be able to help. Sorry I don't have any contact for them here.
I'm already drawing SSD AND Military Disability pay each month .... do I still need to see a Dr there? And with already getting this how hard is it to get these checks DD in a bank there
As for seeing a doctor here, that would depend on your case. Would need to talk to SSA and the VA, some never have to see a Dr here. Direct Deposit is easy with the SS office in Manila after you are here. And I know guys get the military payments also but I'm not sure about the process. I'm sure it's not hard to do. Thanks for watching
Oh Yes, many people do that. Some use debit card, and some use money transfer service. But just know it will Cost a lot and the exchange rates are not as good. Thanks for watching
It all depends on how much you get at 62, everyone is different as to how much you payed into the system. At 62 mine was just over $2,300, easy to live on here.
Also, could you link me to the video about Proof of Life or if it hasn’t been done yet, tell me what that entails? Will he have to visit the doctor to get it affirmed, or just his own signature every 6 months?
Proof of Life is a form SSA 7162 and is sent out to you each year only if you list your address with the SSA as abroad. It's a simple form with 4 question, signed and mailed back to the US .
@@piratecovephilippines4711 Thanks. So if he just leaves his official address in the US and keeps getting his social security deposited to his US bank, there’s nothing else he has to do? That seems like the easiest option. And then he can still use his US debit/ATM card in the Philippines.
It depends on what you want to do, you can keep it going to your bank in the US and just use ATMs and money transfers or you can have SS change your direct deposit to your Philippines bank.
If you collect SSDI and live overseas, you are required to return to US every 6 months, stay 30 days, provide proof of stay to SSA. Wash, rinse, repeat every 6 months. I THINK you can get around this by maintaining your US address and putting your cash benefit in a US Bank. Just make sure you have a friend or family member forward any SSA correspondence to you as quickly as possible. Fill out the forms, send it back to your family and have them mail it to SSA. My disability is considered permanent and I have not had a re- evaluation since I started collecting SSDI in 2017.
Negative, you are not required to return to the US to keep SSDI in effect. Many stay here year after year with only a Philippines address and funds deposited into a Philippines bank.
Well, I called SSA yesterday and asked that same question about SSDI and they told me that I could only stay out of United States six months and then I had to inform them that I had returned so what is the real deal then@@piratecovephilippines4711
Back in early 90's I received SS Disability that has since been converted to regular SS but I was never checked by any local Philippine doctor so I not sure about that and I am 71 now been living here in the Philippines over 35 years. I also use BPI with Dollar account along with my US Bank never had a problem with BPI but have problems with my crazy US Bank
As I said when on SSDI "in some cases" you may be required to see a doctor for review. I know of a couple of guys that had to do this. As for US banks , I know a lot of people with that had problems and hard to deal with being so far away. Thanks for watching
At what age did your ssdi turn to ss. I’ve been on ssdi since 2001. How did you receive the short forms they send every 7 years. I feel like a prisoner because of ssdi but it’s gotten to the point that I can no longer at to live in the USA.
@@ohno-zx4if I think my SSD turned to reg SS when I reached age 62 and had been receiving SSD since I was early 40s. Living in the Philippines SS would send a form every single year to make sure I am still alive and nobody has taken over my payments. I am now almost 72 and still kicking but have many problems that I have to deal with daily.......
Sir, may I know what is your health insurance you use there in the Philippines which you said it cost less money, I am also looking for the best health insurance in the Philippines
Current I have Philhealth, but it's not really insurance, but it will cover about 25% to 35% of your bill. I'm in the process of looking into regular insurance and the best I have found is Pacific Cross. I'm also looking at a program that's going around , you invest into a hospital corporate fund. You invest about 350K and you receive 50% off all services. And you can still use Philhealth to lower the bill more. Of course you still must fund the balance yourself.
I believe it will change to regular SS retirement at 65, but I'm not sure about how all that works. As far as living here it won't be a problem at all. You can even have it direct deposited into your Philippines bank.
Hello, i have a question. I was told that if you have medicare part A and part B and you move overseas since they ( SSA ) doesn't cover medical expenses and medical bills and i asked ok then can i not get the part A and part B SSA then told me that i will lose my benefit. So is that true or not.
No, you don't lose it unless you op out. Many keep medicare but have to return to the US to use it. For myself I will op out of part B as I can get good insurance here for both the wife and I for less money.
Actually, you could have specified when you wanted to receive Social Security payments to be effective and they will honor that. For instance, if you wanted to start in February; they will send it with any other months they are behind when it's all up-to-date.
I'm SSDI from september 2021 living in Alaminos Pangasinan do you maybe know wich dr.offices are legit or authorised by Social security administration so I can visit tham are thay only in Manila or all around Philipines. Thank you very much in advance.
Hello. New subscriber here, trying to get a SRRV for my dad. He is 78 years old and has a pacemaker but is otherwise in good health. Would he qualify for SRRV classic?
@@piratecovephilippines4711 no he isn’t a veteran. Yes his Social Security retirement is over $2000 a month. He had an aortic aneurysm a few years ago which required a surgery and a pacemaker. He actually got an otherwise clean bill of health recently, although he does LOOK old and frail. I know you’re not a doctor, just wondering if you know how strict the requirements are for the classic SRRV. We really don’t want to have to go with the “human touch” SRRV since that requires private insurance and would be more complicated.
He should have no problem with getting the classic. They do required a medical exam, but sounds like he's doing fine. The cost will be. Bank deposit of 10K USD Process fees of 1,400 USD Yearly renewal fees of 360 USD Just make sure he has a good way to cover medical cost, at any age we need to make sure we all have a way to get medical care.
In some cases that my be required. If you haven't been seen in the US for a evaluation, then probably won't need it here in the Philippines. Thanks for watching
I just came across your channel and just subscribed. Unexpectedly surprised that US Embassy have Social Security here. Good infos thank you so much. Still have a few years and thinking when I’m gonna start mine. Just a question do you pay tax on your pension payment?
Yes, it's nice to have SS office here to help with anything that may come up. US citizens are not required to pay taxes on their pension in the Philippines.
@@gratitudetouniverse3754 , if you don't have other income and don't meet the minimum income limits, then you don't have to file, but some say it's still a good idea. And yes you can file online or just fill out on paper and send it to the IRS.

You can apply 4 months before you are eligible for social security, my birthday is in early March so I am eligible to begin receiving my benifit in April, and my first direct deposit will be in May. So 4 months before my eligibility which is the first full month I Am 62 is April , I went on-line December 1st which was the first day I was eligible to apply. All went well, it was a little mind bending trying to answer the question of "list the last four times you were in the US for 30 consecutive days" and list the dates, so my last four visits to the Philippines I had to do the backwards, sideways math... it was difficult for me anyway, sometimers disease? It allowed me to list my under age kids and wife so hopefully they will give me the dependent child allowance as well automatically. I will report back Walter and tell you if it went as yours did with the phone interview ect. and if the eagle shits in May as expected. Did you begin receiving your deposit on the third of every month after the delay with your first deposit?
@@piratecovephilippines4711 Did you begin receiving your deposit on the third of every month after the delay with your first deposit? (Because you are living out of the US?)
Sorry, I don't use BDO, so I can't say for sure. I have heard many say they would never use BDO again, and many others say they have no problem with them.
I tried to make an appointment with the Manila social security for 4 months via email and they always replied we have no appointments available. 2 weeks before my 62nd birthday I flew back to the US to file for my benefits.
I sorry to here that. You could have filled online, then the SS office in Manila will email you with a phone interview within a couple of weeks. That's how I did it with no problems at all.

Walter, From the comments below, it's possible to have ones SS $ direct deposited into a bank in PH, but is it a good idea to have 401k, Roth ira, or Roth 401k $ direct deposited into the same acct there as SS $, or is it better to have retirement $ deposited into a separate set up PH bank acct? @sdsomar1 , yes I explain that in my videos. But it's not a problem at all. You go to the bank, withdrawal from the SS account and exchange for pesos and deposit into your regular pesos account that has ATM and all other features like transfer and bill pay. No problem at all.

Hello Sir, Just doing research .. I found out from other Expats that they open a Charles Schwab account before moving to the Philippines and have their pension directly deposited there. I've read too that Schwa reimburses ATM fees occurred at the end of the month
I am a Schwab client. Rebates on ATM withdrawal fees will appear as soon as the withdrawal is posed in the account history, usually one to two days. Sadly, Schwab sent me an E-mail on 6 October 2022 that they will no longer allow Americans to hold any account type if living in the Philippines. Effective 6 December all accounts will be "restricted" and going forward, only closing translations will be accepted. Japan and Viet Nam have partial restrictions, you may not open any new accounts. South Korea, Thailand and Cambodia have no restrictions. Funny but sad world we live in these days.
@@travelinghobo Yes, I believe that is true but I am not planning to fly home to open a new bank account and then potentially have it closed. This is why we are so thankful for the information posted here on Pirate Cove Philippines about direct deposit to an approved Philippine bank. In addition to my trading accounts, I used Schwab bank for international money management while Beautiful Bride was building out her local business ventures and one account for the purpose of receiving my Social IN-Securiy checks when the time came to collect. That is all gone now as of 6 December. I am still waiting for my appointment at the US embassy in Manila to renew my expired passport. That is one requirement that local banks will not skip for any reason. MY 13A was not enough
You never mention there will be a Service fee charge to transfer it to the Philippines like the 4348 E-link they charge $6.50 monthly. No big deal but $6.50 is $6.50 to a fix income like us . But in the anyway on the other hand it’s easy to access my money in BPI in $ or ₱ whatever ever I want it. Take care bro.
Also you have to use A passbook to access your account personally no ATM withdrawal , No transfer or use it for payments. U have to open another savings account.
I'll have to look at that again, guess I didn't say. But you more than make up for it with the good exchange rates. The rates are the most important thing with money transfer.
I only lost about $2 in the exchange $ to ₱ in Western union + .99 cents for service fee total $3.00 so I still lost $3.50 the bank manager didn’t even tell me upfront you won’t get the exact amount you get from U.S. Bank so there is deceiving also the initial deposit now is $ 100.00 no more $5 like you said in the past of your blog.only the waiting period is longer 4-7 days to get it to my BDO peso account. It’s a pain I the neck get the money in BPI deposit it to my BDO savings account. Cause I don’t have any account except for that Foreign Currency savings Account. For the record The FBU confirmed that the difference of $6.50 on my pension was the transfer fee of that 4348 elink remittance portal. It’s not direct coming from SSSA treasury to BPI .Just to klet people know that they won’t get the exact amount of their pension kin the U.S. Bank if they transfer it in the Philippines 🇵🇭 local bank.
The US makes it pretty simple for Americans. I have a friend who had been living in the Philippines for 7 years before he reached the age he could apply for his Australian government retirement pension----he was told that he had to reside in Australia for the two years immediately prior to his application----so basically, come home for two years and then apply

@@piratecovephilippines4711 My understanding is that you need to be 30 days past your birthday before you become eligible to start receiving your funds. There are also some other quirky rules concerning your actual birthdate in terms of the day in which you were born that will affect when they activate your account at least in the US.
Example: birthday is January 5, January then will not count. February is your first full month of benefits. That will be paid in March. If receiving in the US , then will receive on 2,3,or 4th Wednesday of the month. If paid in the Philippines, all are paid on the 3td of the month. Example 2 : birthday is January 1st then January will count and paid in February.

Sir how do you go about applying ss here in the Philippines for appointment they said you can apply here and you don't have to go to U.S.
Yes you can do a lot with the online page.
Do you have to make an appointment in Manila to the social security let me know thanks
You can, but most things can be done by email.
If you are applying for SS, it's done online.
Please advice sir thank you
Just ask whatever questions you have.
I also have my online portfolio which will be connected to my Citibank account.I'll be selling off some of my holdings from time to time & using the proceeds for trips to other places in the Philippines & SE Asia,
Sounds like a good plan, hopefully it works out.

I am on Social Security and still in the U.S. When I move to the Philippines I am sure my Medicare will not work there and I will have to get insurance there. My question is will S. S. put the money for payment back in my check for the Medicare insurance?
Only if you stop medicare, its not automatic.
But if you decide in the future to start medicare up again the premiums will be at a higher cost.

You must get the ITIN # , but it's very hard to get and is often not given.
Best to get in touch with the veterans association here in the Philippines as they may be able to help.

As for seeing a doctor here, that would depend on your case.

Sir one question
Is reduced benefit begun early at 62 y.o enough to live off of if there are no other incomes???
It all depends on how much you get at 62, everyone is different as to how much you payed into the system.
At 62 mine was just over $2,300, easy to live on here.
Sir it's ok to go walkin at the U.S embassy to check the SSA of my relatives to know what requirements to pass. Ty for your feedback sir
I'm not sure about walk in, but maybe with appointment.
Check the website.
If you are already receiving SSDI in the states and decide to retire in the Philippines. How does that work?
My bad, I was just going by what SSA website said a week or two ago. They give very conflicting info.

Allow me to ask a few questions to give you the correct info.
1) is he a veteran?
2) does he have a pension of $ 1000 a month or more ?
Bank deposit of 10K USD
Process fees of 1,400 USD
Yearly renewal fees of 360 USD

You can apply 4 months before you are eligible for social security, my birthday is in early March so I am eligible to begin receiving my benifit in April, and my first direct deposit will be in May. So 4 months before my eligibility which is the first full month I Am 62 is April , I went on-line December 1st which was the first day I was eligible to apply. Also you have to use A passbook to access your account personally no ATM withdrawal , No transfer or use it for payments. U have to open another savings account.

That would really suck to have to go home for 2 years.

Hi would you be willing to exchange emails? I’m moving to the Philippines in a few months and I’ve got some questions about Social Security, and I’d like to talk to another person. I came across your channel doing a search. If you’re not interested, I understand and respect that.
Anytime, piratecoveph@gmail.com
First contact your social security office
Everything can be done by email from the SS office at the US embassy in Manila.
