Beautiful painting! I love painting butterflies. About the Caran D'Ache set: They have made a couple changes from when this video was made. They switched out the gray for magenta, for one; and, two, the set comes wrapped in card stock that has the color names on it for swatching. You just match the number from the side of each pan to the number on the swatch card and it gives you the name of the color. Still no info on the light fastness, though, as far as I can see. I received mine as a gift, and I just love it. The only thing available locally are the cheap ones, and I didn't care for them.
This 🦋 is so beautiful! Thanks, Shana! This is an excellent set. In Europe this is clearly a student set, recommended by schiols everywhere. It is not that expensive as in the US. CDA describes it as a 2-in-1 set. With added white, they work as opaque colours, otherwise they are more like watercolours. I find them not that opaque straight from the pan.
Thabk you! Yeah, they are definitely not as opaque as I would expect from a regular gouache, so that makes a lot of sense! They are pretty good for a student grade product, though! Thanks for watching!
The Caran D’ache pan gouache is an absolute pleasure to paint with. I also find it easier than tubes and at first I couldn’t understand why, then I realised it is because the gouache has very little colour shift. This is a GOOD thing, since the more that gouache colour shifts, the more filler/opacifiers it has in it - which shows what a quality product it is. I just wish Caran D’ache would do an artist version and supply pigment/lightfast information. PS: Did CD’ache ever get back to your query?
They really are awesome to work with, I love them! I agree with what you have said about color shifting! I wish they would add the pigment and lightfast information too. Unfortunately, I never did hear back from them, which I was quite surprised about. 😕
@@CautionArtistatPlay That’s a shame they didn’t get back to you, although sometimes emails get lost in the nether regions. I gave my CD gouache to my (adult) son last year as he started getting interested in art though has little time to do it being a lawyer. I’m considering re-purchasing them again after watching your video because I do miss them. By the way I don’t know where you are located but single pans can be purchased here www.greatart.co.uk/caran-d-ache-studio-gouache-paints.html
I have that set and haven’t used it yet. I also have tons of those Strathmore cards. I have 9 grandkids and try to paint them each a birthday card, Valentines Card, etc. So that keeps me busy. Thanks for the demo. Will have to try them out now.
Great work! I'm in the decision of either buying the pans or the tube form. Your video helped in my decision. Thank you very much. Can't wait for more videos.
Just beautiful, Shana❣️ I love the way the tree bark set off the butterfly (great idea to add a little blue), and the composition with the diagonal line is so pleasing. Have you tried colouring over gouache with coloured pencil? I learned it from Val Webb’s “Birds and Butterflies on Vintage Postcards” course. The chalky surface is perfect for colouring on with pencils, even light colours over a dark base.
Thank you Sabine! No I have not tried that! I have used colored pencil over watercolor but haven't done it with gouache! I will definitely have to try that sometime, thanks for the tip!!
I got this gouache paint set. Just like any gouache paint set whether it’s going to be in a tube or jelly paint or a pan when you put a white paint on top of another paint for highlights the white is going to mix in with the paint underneath it simple as that.
Yes, for sure, that does tend to be the nature of gouache. That being said, I have worked with other gouache brands as well and found my white Holbein gouache to layer a bit better and be a bit more opaque than the one in this set, at least in my experience. Some brands tend to work better than others just as with other mediums. I really do love this set though!
Yeah I couldn’t find any information on these just the pigment is great and it’s cheap so yeah thanks a lot for this video you’re info is so helpful thanks ^^
When I first saw your post of that butterfly on Instagram, what immediately came to mind was, I hope she makes a TH-cam video for this piece. At the beginning of the video, I thought you were painting the butterfly against a brick wall, due to the shapes I saw you making. Also, I regularly buy Strathmore watercolor greeting cards to make birthday cards and such, so if I ever decide to try gouache, which I probably will, I'll keep your suggestion in mind.
Lol Thank you Sara, it's funny that you thought it was brick, I can see why you would have thought that. It's always interesting to see how a painting will progress from start to finish. I loved this paint on the strathmore paper, worked out great!
I mainly use synthetic taklon brushes, typically inexpenstive brands. In this one I used the one that came with the set and really like it. I also like Simply Simmons and Royal Langnickel brushes quite a bit. I don't tend to spend a lot on brushes.

Custom cards for each of the grandkids is a wonderful idea! I love these paints, they are a ton of fun to play with!

Glad I could help!!
Beautiful! Do you have a preference for acrylic gouache, or regular gouache?
Thank you! Honestly, I love them both. Just kind of depends on my mood, I guess, and how I feel like layering.
