    Would love to hear you and Dr Emma talk about The Ordinary products and how to effectively utilise them. I love that they are specific ingredients, a bit like a serum with a concentrated ingredient that focuses on doing something.

    Thanks Dr Sam & Dr Emma, another great video. However, I think that nearly everone who has commented has asked for a little more detail re layering, which order. I think this would help us all enormously. Thanks ladies X

    I think we need more info on layering...this video was vague and confusing...

  • @BluesChanteuse
    @BluesChanteuse 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Actually no, that was very generic info. I'd like to know things like "How long do you wait, after cleansing, to apply Retin-A? Do you wait to apply serums after Tretinoin? What sorts of things interfere with Trentinoin's effectiveness?

    • @jenGeeJushawshee
      @jenGeeJushawshee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is all very basic information, anyone that Rxd you tretinoin should have gone over all that with you! It also can be found on numerous YT videos!

      Jen, I'm confused as to why you took the time and effort to offer such an unhelpful and somewhat obnoxious reply.

    Just want to add, that it's really important to see dermatologist when there is a skin problem. Years ago I was struggling with a teenage acne and my lovely Dermatologist got rid of it within a few months. Couldn't be more happy and gained my confidence back. I recommend to anyone with skin problem to go and find a good Doctor instead of trying stuff on your own and making more damage than good. Fantastic job Dr Sam and Dr Emma.

    I agree with others here - as 'not doctors' some of the theory went a little over my head - talking ingredients and stuff like that is great, but when I'm standing in my bathroom morning and night it can get confusing.....
    The one thing that really sunk in, was the 'protect' in the morning, and 'repair' at night....
    But with all the different ingredients our there, how do we tell the difference?? ( besides the obvious that is ;) )

    • @catherine142
      @catherine142 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. I just made an appointment to a dermatologist to help me get on a program. Everything is so confusing!

    • @BluesChanteuse
      @BluesChanteuse 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Agree. Also I've read that applying essenses/toners before/after serums can either help or prevent serums or other actives from absorbing. I'm confused as to which is which.

    • @jenGeeJushawshee
      @jenGeeJushawshee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, one for AM and one for PM would have been helpful!

    • @oreos888
      @oreos888 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BluesChanteuse well for me, the it depends on the density of the essences and serums. For example, I'd use a water based serum first before an oil based serum, if that helps? :) x

    • @RockeyToes
      @RockeyToes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I've heard, generally one goes in order from lightest to heaviest; e.g., cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer/cream and then sunscreen.

    would you still use exfoliating acids (glycolic, salicylic or lactic) if using a night time retinoid? if yes would it be just in the morning or to clear skin at night and help retinoid penetrate better?

    • @cc3204
      @cc3204 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm wondering the same!! I also use a glycolic and lactic acid at night and a retinoid....

    • @jenGeeJushawshee
      @jenGeeJushawshee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, you never mix glycolics and retinoids!

    • @cc3204
      @cc3204 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, but why?

    • @cc3204
      @cc3204 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't irritate my skin, and honestly the results are amazing. But I don't use the retinol every night.

    • @jenGeeJushawshee
      @jenGeeJushawshee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using retinoids and an AHA (e.g. glycolic acid) or BHA (e.g. salicylic acid) actually diminishes the effectiveness of both ingredients. Retinols/Retin A should not be mixed with BHA or AHA because the BHA and AHA can inactivate the retinoid.
      Always use retinoids at night because the sun can also make the retinoid/Retin A less effective.Christina Cassidy

    Hi, Dr. Sam. Layering is an interesting topic. Could you, maybe, do a video with more details on this and also touch on a subject of the Korean skin regime which is famous for layering, as they are taking extra care in their skin care (allegedly as many as 7 steps/products at a time). Thanks in advance.

  • @PlugInKali
    @PlugInKali 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the statement "look at the first five ingredients" is a bit misleading, because, for example, when you're dealing with something as potent as retinoids (where the recommended amount is normally between 0.3 and 0.5%) they will very rarely appear so up in the ingredient list.
    Other than that, it was, as usual, a very informative video :)

    • @cc3204
      @cc3204 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes! good point!

    • @Aristaifly

      Isn't 0.3 and 0.5 a concentration of the ingridient? It can be 0.1% concentrated and be in the first place of the ingridients because the product consists of 99% (just a number from my head) of that thing.

    I understand the order of layering active ingredients, then moisturizer, then sunscreen but I would appreciate more precise details on ingredients that should be layered. Perhaps one of you can demo AM and the other PM. Also, do we need to allow time in between layers for absorption? TIA

    Love this video! It gives lots of insight into which products should be used when, why, and how. I have a question: so if I have a vitamin C serum (L-ascorbic acid) and it also has peptides in it which to my knowledge is more of a nightly repair active, should I be applying this serum morning or night?

      Morning: BHA (to minimize pores), Vitamin C (enhances sunscreen properties), Vitamin B 3, then moisturizer with sunscreen. Evening: AHA, Retin A (tretinoin) then moisturizer. Remember, Acids to penetrate, then serums or specialty products (Retin A) to absorb into the skin better, then finally, moisturizer to lock it all in.

    Would you be applying exfoliating acids like AHAs, say in toner format, under the antioxidants in the morning? Seeing as the penetration of vitamin C is optimal at a lower pH, and using it at night would probably be too irritating in combination with retinoids.

  • @jcjccmz
    @jcjccmz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    great theoretical pribciples...I agree some examples would have been helpful as well... where do you put in 2% bha liquid, acne spot treatment, "retinoid oil" (sunday riley luna), etc (on the nights I'm not using my retin a micro)?

      +ella bee wow, thanks! i never wouls have thought of that, having not much sense. how nonsensical to hope a dermatologist would answer, but now seeing other comments with questions with no helpful replies (except yours of course), i see it was just dumb to ask. it is so kind and generous of you to share your wise words. what a ray of sunshine you are

    Do you use moisturizer then sunscreen or can fit be the other way around ? My chemical sunscreen is in a serum form with some other vitamins and i would prefer to use before my moisturizer after my antioxidant serum in the am but have always heard it should be the last thing applied before makeup. Would love some insight on this ?

    Ugh. Layering products is sooo dang confusing. It seems everyone has a different opinion...even amongst professionals/dermatoligists. 😩 Anyone have advice on my current routine? (I'm early 40s still battling moderate/severe acne, PIH, melasma, and fine lines on forehead and around eyes)
    AM: Cleanse
    Tone
    BHA (watery consistency)
    Antioxidant serum
    Pure Hyaluronic Acid (serum consistency)
    Pure Squalane (serum consistency)
    Eye cream
    Sunscreen
    Primer and makeup (some days)
    PM: Cleanse
    Tone
    Tretinoin cream (.025% every other night)
    *30 minutes+ after applying tretinoin I then apply:
    Eyecream
    Moisturizer/night cream
    (On the nights I don't use tretinoin I use 1% Clindamycin lotion)

    "Dr Emma works FOR ME at the clinic".....ouch!!!! the look on her face!!!! even if the clinic is in your name, and you are the one paying rent and dealing with admin stuff, she is a doctor, a colleague who works with you Dr Sam. anyway, back to the video now.

    • @carolinejames5289

      You clearly aren't paying attention - Dr Sam CLEARLY says that she works with Dr Emma, Not that Dr Emma works fir her in the practice. She is very deferential to Dr Emma at all times who is clearly very bright. As someone who sees Dr Emma at the practice its clear that Emma is treated there with the absolute respect due for her tremendous intellect. Indeed the negativity of this whole list of comments is staggering to me. Here are 2 busy doctors taking time out of their schedule to share some of their knowledge and receiving a hug amount of negativity and mean-spirited comments. Shame on you all.
