I'm Korean and spent my youth in the 80s and 90s, but I'm really curious why Korean broadcasters never mentioned these artists. I've at least heard of some veteran singers who performed in the US after them, but I only learned about these artists recently, after turning 50. I don't know if it's because of broadcasting rights or just indifference, but if it weren't for TH-cam, I would have never seen them in their prime.

I've admired for years how Ed Sullivan fought to allow black acts to perform on his show back when local network affiliates didn't want him to, and through being subscribed to this channel and seeing how many times Ed booked the Kim Sisters (despite never being huge chart sensations), I've realised they must've been beneficiaries of his racial tolerance as well. I imagine most white people in the US at the time would've rarely seen Asian people on TV (other than the news), so getting to know the Kim Sisters through repeat performances like this must have been a big deal.
@@Youdontknowwhatliterallymeans I wasn't aware of that Bonanza character, though from researching him it appears he was a very minor part of the show (even if he became very popular regardless). Other than the Kim sisters and Hop Sing then, not many Asian folks on TV in the US then.
@@Youdontknowwhatliterallymeans no one was obsessed with race but no one can deny the fact that back then no one thought about talented performers that happened to be people of color
You may not agree but I'd say even one top 10 American hit, especially in as competitive an environment as our entertainment industry reflects, qualified them as huge chart sensations. This the Kim Sisters accomplished in 1962 when their version of The Coasters song "Charlie Brown" reached number seven on the Billboard singles chart. Their Ed Sullivan performance of this tune is here on TH-cam now.
After this aired, everyone wanted to be either a mandolinist, a flutist, or a marimba player. I remember. I sold my Stratocaster the next day and bought a marimba and still play it although I today I enjoy minimalist music rather than show tunes.
Many in entertainment, politics, and media try to say the are the first this and the first that. Many try to claim to be trailblazers. These three girls, ladies and gentlemen, are what trailblazers really look like.
😊 I introduced my mom to the Kim Sisters, who used to watch the Ed Sullivan show with my grandma when she was still alive in the 1960s. My grandma couldn't speak English but my mom said she absolutely loved watching Ed Sullivan and American Bandstand. I previously introduced BTS and various famous kpop stars to my mom (who is 75) and she really adores them. Because she has a traditional Mexican Catholic mindset, she always complements Korean singers for wearing tasteful clothing that isn't too revealing 😂😂😂. She loves watching the boy bands pwrform especially because they remind her of Michael Jackson and a bit of Elvis 😂😂😂😊.
