For those of you who have no idea what a High Pass filter is ,... here is the what it really should be Called in My Opinion ... High pass Filter = Low cut Filter //// Low Pass Fliter = High Cut Filter ... the terminology is fucked .... because High pass your thinking up in the frequency range of 10khz .... but really High pass is working down at 40hz or 50hz ... limiting the amount of BASS signal coming through! everytime someone says High Pass Filter ... I have to think ... Oh they really mean Low cut Filter ... Rant over!

Even cheap turntables are better today than they were in the bad old days which allows deeper and louder bass to be cut onto a record. What's interesting is how good the bass can be on some LPs from the mono era. Much more focused as well.

    very good
    two questions, though:
    1. What do you think of the "mono maker" option on some plugins? Instead of a high pass filter on group busses or the two bus, is this sometimes a better choice?
    2. Are there any negative impacts on audio when processing with digital high pass filters? Is the phase of the audible audio impacted? In other words, is it entirely transparent? Moreover, is there--or what is--the difference between how analog hardware would high pass a signal?

    Thanks Streaky, great stuff !
I've always struggled with high pass everything except kick or bass mindset that some mixing engineers prefer...
I've always felt like I'm missing something with this kind of mindset, during my mixing process, so I high pass when I know or hear that certain instrument is making troubles down there.
But I won't do it If I hear that it's part of the sound I want, even if I could get bit louder mixes without some of that bass...
I look at bass in terms of depth of sound, warmth, weight or power which is especially important for me in today's "digital" music which often lacks "analog warmth" and cohesion I get from low bass.
What do you think about high pass everything mindset and how do you see the role of bass in terms of creating full spectrum mixes ?
Because we know that everything in the mix affects how the rest of the mix will sound,...right ?

Great video! Thanks for the clarification. Guys in my field (dance music) need to see this!!! Too many people cutting tons of lowend out of their masters still, as a way to gain more volume (thanks to the loudness wars)!

Hi Streaky, which slopes do you usually use for high pass on Mastering? 6db, 12db/octave?

To be clear: it's cutting to *lacquer*, rather than cutting to vinyl (which are pressed). (Unless it's one of those poor cousin direct-to-plastic-via-a-direct-drive-turntable-with-mono-cutting-head systems).
But yes: there's no need to over-filter, and if DIY mixing, especially not on lead vocals - keep the fullness and "body" in there. There are few things worse than a vocal being loud enough in a mix, yet thinned out due to over-use of high pass filtering. And know how steep the filter's curve is. (perhaps spot-treat any pops/thumps instead, or aim for 50-60Hz HPF, not 100Hz).
It's far easier to deal with slightly excessive low end at mastering (and shape it, as mentioned), than excessive high end.

I'm getting a lot of low end rumble...doing sonic rock stuff...i'm mastering my own stuff...would a high pass be fine (maybe 20, 30 or 40 hz on the master bus? Thanks!!!

Brilliant! I have argued countless times with some of my producer friends during the years that there is no need to cut any sub bass on the master if you have it all under control inside the actual mix. Did you say they cut out everything below 200hz on one of your examples or did i hear that wrong? If so, that is just insane! Btw..i went back on your earlier videos and you did a review of the Sennheiser HD800s headphones. I have been thinking about picking up a pair maybe, but i have a question for you about those. Did you use any additional amp for them? I believe they are 300ohm, and i am worried about plugin them directly into the headphone output on my Uad Apollo twin 2. Do you think that would be a problem? Problem as in would it compromise the sound in any way.

    lo cut or hi pass?

    • @danielkisel5661
      @danielkisel5661 6 ปีที่แล้ว

those are synonyms, it means the same.
Some equalizers show high pass filters some low cut filters, but do the same thing, getting rid of low frequencies...
