it was never the same after Val left. To me, she made the show. I watched an interview where she said she left because she didn't get on with one of the writers, but seeing comments on here stating it was Elspeth Ballantyne makes me wonder if she just didn't want to reveal that on national tv. Such a shame, it really is because apart from losing the best character, to me personally, if anyone got rid of the Freak, it should have been Bea
Don't know why everyone says the show was crap after Bea left. There were some legendary characters in the later episodes, like Lou Kelly and Reb Keane. And of course Rita Connors.
Bea Lizzie and Doreen a lot of the original characters made the show and it lost the spark after they all left. The storyline’s got ridiculous and over the top also having men in the same area with the women was ridiculous that was the worst choice.
I didn't like prisoner after Val left! I heard Elspeth lagged on her for moving and wanted to stop her travel reimbursement before she got a chance to tell them! They didn't get along off screen!
I love the character of Bea and I respect Val Lehman as an actress she is an amazing gifted actress who sadly never got the chance to show how versatile she could be, But Val as a person I don't respect she is a very arrogant and dismissive with a high opinion of herself iv seen her on talk shows being extremely rude and making it obvious she doesn't want to be on the talk show only for the money im guessing due to this she didn't get the work she expected which is a shame as she has endless talent, And to hear her saying she just walked by secretary show how arrogant she can be.
Perhaps you should look who was doing the interviews on the talk shows..Have you seen Val being interviewed by Michael Parkinson a brilliant interviewer and a fab interview..You can see it on "The Best Of Parkinson In Australia..he was,so impressed he took Val to dinner after the interview..
That doesn't change my opinion what so ever, I still think Val is her own worst enemy and due to this her career did not go the way she expected, Manners cost nothing rudeness isn't necessary, She killed her career with her attitude, and arrogance, She was probably nice to parky because he was obviously much more famous and well respected and knew to behave on that occasion. I still think Val is bitter with Grundy for not getting what she demanded, If it wasn't for that she would possibly be in the show longer, She will always be typecast as Bea
Glad she priced herself out . The series got a new lease of life with Val gone and if they had brought her back the series would have run out of steam sooner . As it was Bea had run her course . Myra Rita and even Nora at times brought new dimensions to the role of Top Dog.
I really liked Anne Phelan as Myra, but then when she left everything fell apart. Prisoner was great all the way up until Myra went, and then it struggled massively, until it was finally cancelled.
I avoided watching Wentworth because of my love of Prisoner until the end of last year when I binge-watched the whole box. What a *GREAT* show! Can't believe Danielle Cormack left the cast though... Still, many other awesome characters to focus on.
Myra was just a re-written and toned down version of Bea. Rita was a much better top dog and believable one . Completely different top dog from Bea who took a more adult approach to drugs. She could also beat the Freak without needing to sneak attack. The show got too trapped in its own cliches near the end of Bea's reign and they often recycled a lot of elements during Myra's stint as top dog . If they had reinvented the show after Val left and got rid of Judy at the same time it would have probably been in a better state by the time they cast Glenda Linscott .
Bea got very montonous as a character. It was hard to root for her at times cause she was so rude & mean. always calling Noleen & Martha stupid. no wonder they turned on her.
well for all she said about her involvement in prisoner she makes lots of money today from her fan reunions. I've met her several times and after being a fan for fourth years I am disgusted
why are you disgusted? I am sorry but i don't get all the hate for lehman, it seems apparent that the management in the show were bullying/mistreating her and she told them to fxxxx off and walked away.Shows she has principles and can stand her ground so fair play to her.Too many people stay in jobs and get bullied by bosses and stand for it just for the paycheque and seethe at their situations. She didn't yet still gets slated. Her still doing the reunions etc. should not change anything, she still is attached to the show but she simply didn't like what the bosses/management had become after so many years in the show and walked away of her own accord. I respect that. That doesn't equate to her hating prisoner or totally disassociating herself from it.
Agreed. Val was the only actress on that show who read her contract and did not wave the right to residuals. Production hated her for that because she got paid for reruns and when the show aired in the UK and USA. They came very close to bringing her back a year or 2 later. They agreed to most of her demands but refused to let her not wave residuals again so she walked away from the negotiations. If she were a man she would have been paid a lot more than what she was asking for. 3 time Logie winner, number 1 show in Australia, huge fan following... but greedy producers and network.
@@PaulDoe79 who said they tried to stop the residuals/royalties? i thought they wouldn't pay the retainer fee as she said here so that's why she wouldn't return-either way it was a foolish choice on the network's side. Whether you like her or not there is no denying she was the bread and butter of the show and the glue that held it together, without her it was never going to work again properly. It was the same with rowena wallace aka pat in sons and daughters, they were foolish to ever let her go as she was what held the show together and with her departure the show sank. Having said that, I don't blame either actress for leaving as being the star of a show like that and playing such intense characters for 12 hours a day must be absolutely physically and emotionally exhausting. I can only imagine in time it would have an effect on your mental health especially rowena wallace as in every scene she was in was usually very heavy and emotional and she'd be all hysterical and that would be draining to do day in and day out.
@@shanefolan a writer from the show who dislikes Val has been trashing her for years but contradicted herself as she would say that Val was never invited back and then admitted Val was asking for too much and had too many demands. Someone asked her how she would know that if Val wasn't invited back. The writer then admitted she was invited back, several times in fact, but Val only showed interest once. When she and her manager met with Grundy's they asked for a lot of money which Grundy's finally agreed to. From what both Val and this writer said (Val in interviews and the writer on social media) the contracts were drawn up and once again Val refused to waive her rights to residuals or allow her image to be used in marketing without receiving a fee or retainer. Grundy's caught on this time (in 1979 Val was the only one not to wave these rights) and told Val she couldn't have those perks and the money she was asking for. There are so many rumors that it is almost impossible to keep up with them all.
I thought with Prisoner when Bea left it sort of went into a rut, you had a couple of characters who tried to give oomph but it was just not gelling. Enter Myra then it gave it a boost unfortunately it hit a wall when the introduced the barnhurst lot and when Judy left and Myra got killed off it just sunk again. Enter Rita Connors and got rid of barnhurst lot over-time and it did pick itself up but fell down again with some stupid story lines, I don't think it recovered till about episode 675 but by then of course they had already decided to cancel the series.

the original idea was that she'd kill the freak in her exit but then they thought it would be two major characters left and it was too much.
Love you Bea!!!!I use to think it was over joan Ferguson but it wasn't! Noone ever replaced Bea smith 😧

Yes, but they repeated storylines & it got stale for a while.

Maybe, but Elspeth has had a rather more varied TV career since Prisoner than Val. It sometimes pays to keep in with the decision makers.

Queen Bea Rules!!Loved Val Lehman in this role!
26 scenes in a day, fuck me, no wonder she quit
I've heard many reasons why she quit. She wanted more money, same as Anne Phelan & she fell out with a writer.
I didn't know Val was in the 2016 season otherwise I would have watched it closer
The beds are like the beds in solilatory in prisoner cell block h
good on her
Show totally changed when she left. It was never the same

+Jay West Yeah, I lost interest once Rita the Beater came in. Still watched the show but not as enthusiastically.
Rita had some good moments, but yeah, it wasn't as good. Wentworth is awesome though.
