TE-2 Tera Echo - Spacious and Space-ish

- The Boss TE-2 Tera Echo has been out for a while and it's still a mystery to most exactly what it does. Heck, after playing around with it for a few hours, I'm still mostly confused, but that's not going to stop me from showing you what I managed to figure out.
The basics: It's a delay that spreads out over time, and a reverb that's reverberating the overtones of what you're playing. Perhaps it's better to just give it a listen.

You look like you are having sooooo much fun with this pedal!
These things cost a fortune new, but if you do not need it for gigs, you can pick up a GT-001 secondhand for slightly less than the secondhand price of the Tera Echo, and you get it and most of the rest of Boss's pedals for free including the overtones effect!
Thank you for the lesson about sonics. That was Very educational and made me feel like I’m actually not wasting my life watching all these pedal demos. Great video.
Something not mentioned in the "sonics" lesson, is that there are additional vibrations in the original note other than the integer order (2, 3, 4 etc.) ones. If you add those into your signal it goes from being a nice sine wave into something that keeps changing and is a lumpy shape ... which is exactly what a distortion pedal does. You can break down any sound/vibration into a stack of sine waves (this is called Fourier Analysis, I believe) of different frequencies at each moment of time. That's why putting an EQ or other filter on a signal can remove the bass or a tricky feedback frequency or all the high hiss ... they remove just the "sine waves" at the appropriate frequency band (in a parametric EQ you set a central frequency to cut or boost, and then you set a width (known as the "Q" of the filter) to say how many frequencies each side you want to cut/boost e.g. central frequency 12kHz, width 3kHz removes a bunch from 9-15kHz but is more effective around 12kHz) ...
This happens with physical spaces and analog machines too. Analog/tape delays have their echoes getting darker/duller as each time around some of the high frequencies fade out. Playing music in one room, the wall to the next room also filters out the high frequencies so you just hear the "thump thump boom boom" of the bass and bass drums. But listening to someone else's ipods on the bus/train you'll only hear the high notes (tiss tiss tiss) because the tiny speakers can't move much air so the bass dissapates in free air but the higher frequencies keep going.
If you take a square wave signal (from a synth or similar) you'll find that it breaks down into the main sine wave, plus all the odd harmonics (3, 5, 7 etc.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_wave#:~:text=The%20ideal%20square%20wave%20contains,wave%20is%20the%20Gibbs%20phenomenon.
You summed up this pedal the best way possible. Seems a little crazy by itself, but fits perfectly in the mix and never gets in the way. Love it!
Exactly! Thank you. I really like the idea of a delay pedal I can set reeaaalllyyyy deep, but also have it flush out whatever its repeating when a new phrase comes in. Total secret weapon pedal.
The TE-2 is my secret weapon for shoegaze and dreampop....pretty much anything. Pair it with a Keeley Loomer running reverse reverb before the fuzz and it has this amazing wall of sound. Run it dialed way back with a Tube Screamer or OD-3 and it's a subtle effect for blues rock too. It's honestly one if my favorite boxes and I can't see it not being on my board.
I have both recently. Will try. Thanks
@@oscarcontreras9593what is your opinion kind sir. I just ordered this and the Boss Space Echo….another much underrated pedal. Hope all went well ;)
Never even considered to stack it behind a tube screamer!
I am going to try stacking it behind a blues breaker and try doing blues/math rock
Thanks!
Anywhere near that Slowdive Star roving wall of sound ? If so, I maybe tempted to get one along with a loomer.
The channel is class: the delivery, info, tunes, opinions, examples, presentation. Channel is a sleeper to go with the Tera.
I ordered this right after watching this video, and wanted to share the manual also let’s you know how to make a temporary pad: “If you hold down the pedal switch, the CHECK indicator will blink green and the effect sound will be held as long as you continue holding down the pedal.” It’s really cool!
Yeah, I recorded something about that but my levels were all over the place when I went to edit it, so it didn’t make the cut. I probably should have gone and re-recorded it, that is a nice feature. Glad you’re enjoying the pedal, too!
Tera Echo is one of the most underrated effects.
I remember trying it at the local guitar store some years ago and i was like "nah not worth buying". But then i bought the Boss DD-200 with Tera Echo mode and i found myself using it a lot. Huge ambient sounds, a little similar to Earthquaker Afterneath in a way.
Oh you’re right about the Afterneath similarities. So many options out there right now, its great.
You know what? You really deserve big numbers here on YT (and life in general). You look like a really nice guy to me! I really like the stile of your vids m8! Keep going!
Thank you so much. I’m certainly trying my best, and appreciate all the support.
This is hands down the best demo I’ve seen on this pedal. You just earned a subscriber!
Thank you so very much!
@Dave Davies it starts half way in. Be well.
I just dug out my Tera Echo after not messing with it for quite a while. I forgot how awesome it is. It's killer
Great video brother very informative. I have this effect on my Boss GT-1. I've had it for about three months but never used the Tera Echo effect until earlier today. Man thing effect can be used in about all genres. Keep the videos coming, you are straight to the point, great demonstration abilities, you know the product and you are not boring.
Great and very insightful review! I'm not sure that I dig that type of effect, but it is certainly cool though still. Keep it up with the great videos!
Thanks Josh! I’ll admit that it didn’t stay on my board for long, but I’m sure eventually a song will come up that just screams for it.
Love the way your Fender Strat looks
Thanks! That’s an American Deluxe. Has a bunch of real interesting features, just a joy to play it
Just picked one of these up today. I had my eye on the RE-202, but the 202 is far too much pedal for what I actually need, and the Tera Echo blew me away when I tried it! I love this thing. It gives me all the ambience I need!
Dude that rack unit cutaway brought back some feelings…
You might enjoy my video on the Digitech 2112. Gonna try and do more rack stuff next year, too
I discovered this effect using my MS-3 and use it for soundscapes in my band. I love it
Good video! The TE-2 is def on my radar now.
A pedal that is really hard to pin down, perfectly stated.. But I absolutely love this pedal. Great vid. I too am a pedal nut. Have been purchasing them since the very early '70's. The Big Muff in your background? Have the first , second, and third generations. Luv the Keeley pedals to your right (absolutely bangs for the buck, have them as well). Have most in your background. We probably would drool over each others stash. Great vid. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for this! Sounds quite similar to the "Bubbling" effect on an Electro-Harmonix Attack Decay when the attack is rettriggered as the note rings out... However, the rate slows down more prominently on the Tera Echo. Anyway, such an entertaining demo. Much appreciated!
I really like your videos! Please keep doing this.
Awesome, I’m glad you like them. Happy to keep making them
You had me at "space lazer" ❤
*pew* *pew*
Love your reviews and your way of delivery.
Thank you so much, that made my day
Tera Echo is built into a couple of my Boss multi-pedals. DD-500 has it as well as my GT-1000 core
ME 80 too
Really cool and great demo. I feel like there's a phaser/flanger lurking in there too.
Trippiest pedal ever. Mine is coming in the mail today! 🤘🤘🤘
Nice. Enjoy it!!
@@StompboxBreakdown I will definitely! Thank you. Great video and breakdown. Subscribed!
GFI Specular Reverb V3>TE-2>Stereo to 2 amps =
*THANK YOU, SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER BRAIN BECAUSE MINE JUST MELTED*
I really dig mine. Such a unique effect!
Great reviews. Keep em coming 👍👍
The synth plus TE-2 explained why it was suddenly 2am and you'd explored new universes, you'd created the Tardis soundtrack! :)
And you didn't mention that it becomes a Freeze pedal when you hold the footswitch down.
The Tera-Echo is in the MS-3 (multieffect and loopswitcher) and in the DD-200 and DD-500.
The other great MDP pedal that does something vaguely similar (but still amazing) is the Slicer SL-2 (which you've also reviewed if I remember correctly)
I have the Boss MS-3 and it has the Terra Echo built in. I dig it. Lots of cool sounds.
Agreed. I have it built into my Boss DD-200 as well.
Its in the me-80 too
Oh yeah they've kept it alive elsewhere. The Algorithm is in the Boss DD-200 & 500 which is amazing, but I'm also glad that I have the standalone :)
Good to know. I’m getting *real* close to pulling the trigger on a DD-200 for my board, and that helps.
We got a boss gt1-b which is a multi effects for bass guitar - for my wife . it has the terra in it and wow is it awesome on the bass . we have one patch using the envelope filter in front of the terra , and after the terra is the reverb which we have set to a dotted 8th delay . if you play the envelope filter, meaning play quietly and keep the filter closed but then open it up by accenting a single note ... its really something . not for every one of course but we worked the terra echo effect in to a set of 14 originals and its all over those 14 patches , if you set it more subtly , with the ducking it doesnt completely dominate like delay usually does . very cool .
i love this box as well. i use mine with stereo outs on, well, everything. drum machines, samplers, loops, synths... someday i may even run my guitar through it! (note to self: i always seem to use 'guitar' pedals with pretty much everything except guitars. should probably mention this to a therapist someday.)
I want to try it out in the effects loop of the DOD Rubberneck delay one of these days.
This is my next pedal. I stumbled across the circuit in the GT-1 that I’ve been recording with & have used it a bit on some things. I gotta put-one on the board now.
I didn’t think it’d fit into the music I’m playing as much as it does. It really is something.
@@StompboxBreakdown I use it for soloing mostly, and I was shocked too .. sort of a Gilmore thing, but different. It’s unique signal, for sure. A Metal Core comes after that, and I think the live-board is done. I’ll still buy pedal because I’m hooked, but almost to my goal.
Good demos & playing. ☮️
Got it!
Thank you for the synth demo
I found this video because the Gt-1B bass processor has this effect. Not sure if it’s in the guitar version but I’m pretty excited now
This effect is actual done by delaying lower frequencies more than the upper ones. Sort of a time smearing as a function of frequency. I stumbled on the effect by accident goofing around with my arm pedal platform. Found this video to listen to an original one and mine is pretty close. Here is a video th-cam.com/video/XZNI97Y7DIc/w-d-xo.html
Are you sure that's what the Terra Echo does? A Spring Reverb gets its character from this same effect, obviously to a lesser degree.
To me it sounds like the BuggFX Daydream, which uses highly resonant bandpass filters, but not multiple delay paths (IIRC).
@@thos1618 I actually played around with a real tera echo at a shop, and you are right, the real one sounds more 'granular'. I am surprised that my effect is not more common as its just a high order allpass filter and a delay line.
It sounds as a Phaser, Delay, Reverb with a little modulation
There was 3 pedals i was dreaming about. Now i have EHX Freeze and Boss TE-2, there is only Digitech Freeqout left on my list
I actually used the Tera Echo on my Boss ME 80 multi effects pedal board. When you mess with the time, it creates this Tom Scholz like hyperspace sound. I wonder if there’s a way to modify it with an expression pedal so I can do that without having to turn the knob.
Excellent explanation/review!
Use this in most of my clean/modulated patches on GT--001. Excellent.
i love that song where that one singer/songwriter guy uses it for the chorus
The Boss GT-100 multieffect unit has this effect as well. As you say, very usable, the repetitions never get in the way
So does the DD-500
+ GT-1000 and GX-100
And gt-1 I believe
I'm running a two-timer into a Behringer dual phase... I'm getting those sounds easily😁🎸🇬🇧boss space echo...fabulous👍
Nice piece, indeed.
I noticed no one has mentioned holding down the pedal, you get this loopy, atmospheric sound that you can play over. What I think it does is hold the last signal that went through it then loops it for as long as you hold the pedal down. Even crazier, I read the manual for it recently and learned this. Mind you, I got this pedal when it first came out! This is why you RTM (read the manual), lol.
Others have pointed it out here. I actually recorded a segment for it, but I didn’t like the way it came out, and the video was getting too long. I probably should have redone it.
It’s a great feature on this pedal. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, Shnobel can perform a mod to put the pad feature on a remote footswitch which opens up a load of options in a live setting. For like $40 it’s so much fun.
Great review. Thanks.
I love mine, I use it with my piano and synths all day,
I think I might have to give this a go soon!
It’s a very polarizing effect, but in the rights hands, does some amazing things
I have a few of these, no idea why I can't stop buying them.
I feel for ya
No wonder I can't find one....
Great review, just bought one...
can this pedal make the sounds of a normal or more common reverb setting also? thanks
Great video and great pedal. Thank you for sharing. New subscriber
Heeey, that’s awesome. Thank you so much.
Great review!!
Thank you!!
The dd 200 has this pedal in it basically
What a great pedal! I have one. I like turning to tone knob really low and with longer feedback and holding the infinite feature on. It kind of reminds me of EQDs Afterneath pedal in a lot of ways. Both are real interesting echos that borderline into reverb.
I got a DD 200 so I could have the TE as well. Still haven’t used it for anything yet. But it’s just a matter of time.
When you *do* bust it out, it’ll turn heads. That’s all that matters.
Keep making videos🤩Some of us like our Rabbit-Hole A.R.T. DXR Delay🤪🐰Nevertheless you made a valiant effort and did explain the out in the open delay Boss made with the overtone squishy unnecessary sound from remnant echo constipation The Boss Distortion MDP was great Thanks🙀🤩📡🫵
One of these days I’ll have to revisit my SGX 2000. I know there’s for to be some good stuff in there.
@@StompboxBreakdown Good you have it Don’t be too quick to sell things off You’d be surprised
Luv it! Subscribed!
Thank you, I really appreciate it
Kinda want to try this with a synthesizer
After hitting a chord and promptly keeping the pedal pressed down it will freezes/hold a chord for it to be solo over. Keep the all settings in the middle to do this. Try it. You'll have fun. 🤘
It rocks. I actually recorded something to show that but was real unhappy with how it came out and trimmed it for time. Wish I had just re-recorded it :(
It s great to try it on synth.thznks
I like the 80s Jan Hammer Miami Vice sound, is this the best choice or anyone have a better choice?
Oh man, that’s a good question. So lots of reverb, probably an octave in there… have you checked out the OBNE Dark Star?
Noticed you didn’t mention the “hold down pedal” looper/ freeze note part of the effect. Nicely done overall. Just might be worth updating your vid. Peace.
Thanks! I had something recorded but wasn’t really happy with how it came out, and I decided to err on the side of keeping it shorter. I might use it for a “here’s how I’d put a board together for…” video I’m planning. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion!
Great demo… but you missed the freeze function !
Thank you! I originally had a freeze demo part recorded, but didn't like how it turned out, so I cut it. Should have redone it. This might be a video I go and redo in the near future.
Wondering if the Boss Tera Echo pedal and the right delay pedal can get the Andy Timmons / Keeley HALO pedal effect or close to it...?
I’ve heard some amazing stuff from that HALO pedal, haven’t checked that out yet, though. Worth experimenting!
I have the Tera Echo built into my Boss DD-200. With a bit of patient tinkering, you can certainly get into ‘Halo’ territory.
Its great with synths
Oh my God, I totally had that double space rack SGX 2000 unit.
I have its lower-frequency cousin as well, the NIGHT BASS. There’s an in-depth video planned, but I keep getting sidetracked.
Should probably show settings on the pedal as your playing different sounds
I own one of these and I can't figure out the freeze function. it's supposed to freeze what sound or chord you play when you hold down the pedal until the green LED comes on? Well I've done that and see the green LED but it doesnt sound like it's freezing that sound.
It’s tricky to work, sometimes it takes me a few times to *catch* the moment I want to freeze. Basically hold it down when there’s something interesting echoing, and as long as you hold it down, it’ll keep that echoing in the background. Roland has a good demonstration up th-cam.com/video/vCnLmiUugb4/w-d-xo.html
You have to play your note then hold the pedal..play then hit.
Nice review - but you could have been a little bit more generous with more sound examples. Also: the combination with other fx pedals would be interesting. Maybe you'll spend a "Part II" ? 😉👍👍
great video!
Thank you!!
Hi dude! I really like the ethereal tones this pedal can produce but I don't like the ducking sounds. Is any configuration to avoid them? Help me please! Of you depend if I'm buying the pedal or not. Haha!
A big hug from Mendoza, Argentina!
Unfortunately, I don't think there is, it's part of the sound, linked to the attack of the note. There's a control for Resonance in the DD-500 for the Tera Echo mode, but that might not help. Thanks for watching!
It’s in my GT100.
I miss King of Queens
Should have ran it into some drive/distortion. To hear more of its potential.
if you dig the tera check out shift line a+ astronaut reverb
I’ll check it out, thanks!!
Looks like you forgot to mention the (very nice) hold function. But good demo !
Yeah, I recorded a bit for that, but wasn’t thrilled with how it came out, so I cut it. Wish I had redone it. Thank you for watching!
be cool to hear it in context with his band.
The true secret of this pedal is to combine it with the mo-2 infront in stereo. Kill dry both and tone all the way down both. give them just a tiny bit detune and feedback. Thank me later. For advanced use install a cv mod on the s-time on the te-2 and rock it with a exp pedal
Yeah....I want it
A legend, i want this pedal,, 100th boss one,,, thé série is insane,: adaptive distorsion, multi overtone, tera écho,,, wahou
You get your hands on the slicer yet bud?
Not the new one, but I’ve got the OG SL-20. There’s a video but I wanna redo it.
They had three pedals in the series
TE-2, MO-2, DA-2?
@@StompboxBreakdown i love the adaptive distortion. The multi overtone is best used in stereo with two amps and the terra echo is cool with synths as well.
Love my Boss TE-2 TERRA ECHO and the rest of my 19 FX pedals from ADawliah Al-Khobar Saudi Arabia
Hold function?
Yup, its got one. I didn’t include it in the video for reasons I’ve covered before, but I’m thinking about redoing it next year
I own an ME-80 which has a tera-echo setting. At first I had no idea how to use it, than I thought "why not just use it for leads" and I liked what it did.... however, I still find the traditional analog delay to sound best on a lead guitar.
BUT, there was one song I covered where the Tera Echo killed it - th-cam.com/video/Hezp0rHrf-M/w-d-xo.html
.
Awesome!!!! Yeah, it does some really unique stuff and I was surprised at how well it worked in a band setting, its not just a gimmick. Great cover, love that song, and I think your buddy and I have the same wine red Les Paul studio 🤜🤛
@@StompboxBreakdown That's me! The only people not me are the drummer and singer. I loved that I was able to crank the Tera-Echo for that really spacey tremolo part, it nailed it. If Jonny Greenwood doesn't own a TE-2, he needs to pay attention! Thank you for listening!
Just try one :)
This pedal makes the sound from the "Star Hill" in super Mario RPG
th-cam.com/video/_6jDv3ho4GM/w-d-xo.html
Hahahaha, wow that's it! I wish I had included that as a demo riff
Hi, what was the synth that you used ?
That’s an Arturio Micro Brute
🤘👍🏿
How do we feel about this pedal compared to the Catalinbread Soft Focus?
I know these two aren’t exactly the same, but seem to cover a somewhat similar niche.
Haven’t been able to try the Soft Focus yet, but it looks really interesting
I was with you until tthe Tera-ble pun.
Great pedal!...if only boss pedals had a buffer that you can switch OFF
I still don't like Boss Films, I won't change my mindset for those cheaper fittings...
Dammit, I play rhythm guitar in a punk band. I do NOT need this pedal, or the Multi Overtone. No, I do NOT need them, no, must… resist… must… not… spend… more… money… on… pedals… I don’t need…. aaarrrggluugggckk…

Sounds pretty useless to me, who on earth is going to gig onstage making a useless noise like that ? We wouldn't want our audience walking out
