Doing life drawing at University, gave me an understanding of how much I was neglecting in my observational skills. Definitely recommend it for everyone regardless of their industry, opens up so many cognitive muscles.
I definitely agree that learning to draw is almost like learning to see. I was very lucky and had an amazing drawing teacher my first semester of school - and after that it really felt like I was looking at everything differently. It's easy to make a measured line to scale in a computer but to actually "feel it out" and do a scaled drawing by hand is a whole other level.
That is awesome! Lucky for you. Drawing sections is a physically investigative process. You cannot stand still for the whole process and must move to find out more.
After watching composer Ludwig Goransson talking about the difference in scoring musik by writing/playing on an instrument vs doing it on a computer I feel a strong resemblance when I’m doing a drawing/sketch with pen and paper vs doing a model in a computer. I’m parapharsing here but he talks about being guided by the instruments and that it is something that gives something back to you. You can feel it in your fingers and in your body, but when you sit by the computer you are given all this information but you don’t get anything back. Almost like solving puzzle where you add a piece to another piece like going thru a maze.

I have kept my A0 ISIS drawing-board from varsity days, the best R100 (10$ AUS) I have ever spent. You have to be able to draw to design. Drawing helps you figure things out, it gets your mind engaged and makes you understand what you doing. How would any architect analyze and understand Frank Loyd Wrights Falling Water Water without drawing it by hand? Surely this exercise would enable you to understand space and human-scale better? Thanks Andrew!
I also miss drawing board. I think there is something that is definitely that’s missing in most students and graduates right now is the sense of scale. A lot can’t even print their drawings to the correct scale to start with which is a worrying sign. But the idea of relative scale, knowing how big a person is at 1:100 and what size feels right for each space, it’s a bit like driving a car, you don’t have to look all the time because you know how wide the car is already.
