Pro tip: When speaking to strangers in Latin countries, rather than saying "tienes" say "hay" instead. "Tienes" is a bit too personal to say to strangers in much of Latin America, there it's used mostly with friends and family. Certainly in Mexico, for sure (and better to err on the side of caution elsewhere). Eg "Hay gatorade?" rather than "Tienes gatorade?," "Hay pollo y arroz acqui?" rather than "Tienes pollo y arroz acqui?," etc. You'll come across as even more the class act that you are ;)
I'm well traveled in Latin America and have never heard that. No one seems to have taken offense but I'll try it. It seems like a good idea.
Alternatively, use the usted form. "Usted tiene....?" Usted is commonly used in Colombia among strangers/elders and in formal situations. Take this suggestion with a pinch of salt, as I'm not a native Spanish speaker and only at an intermediate level.
@@deanjackson9484 Yes, definitely use "usted" when speaking Spanish anywhere to strangers, especially older strangers. But even using the more formal "tiene," eg "tiene comida?" would still be considered too familiar in much of Latin America.
@@guydreamr I sense the formality applies more in business settings and among the upper class. When I talk to people on the street, they're very informal, including when they're addressing me. The only place I routinely see usted used is in advertising and government notices.
@@waynetompkins3006 Informality is indeed widely practiced in daily relations, especially among those of similar age, but the "hay" vs "tienes" distinction is nevertheless widely observed in Mexico. Why the difference? Who knows, other than to illustrate that language isn't always strictly logical. Why do we drive in a parkway and park in a driveway? Why do we say "I eat, you eat, we eat," but "he/she *eats*?" It's one of life's inconsistencies.

I remember going to el Salvador in 2011 and received the same kinda vibe, we went to the wrong area and that's on us. I can understand some of these folks believing we are there for the wrong reasons. Kurt handled that situation very well, no eye contact with him and keep moving along! btw I'm from the USA and they knew somehow or guessed, we had a couple sketchy incidents but hey I'm alive!

Based on his videos, it was extremely annoying to watch how scammers constantly try to sell you something at 10x the price, don't give you privacy and are in general very persistent. It's very off-putting and many potential tourist visitors were lost after watching those videos.
