Dale Allison was a very humble man, who wore his vast learning lightly. He was a joy to listen to, particularly as he did not have an agenda to push. He gave some cracking insights into the New Testament milieu because the depth of his scholarship was so immense. I love his idea that some scholars and thinkers are 'mutants' as well. To bring in Justin Martyr near the end - that was superb, to try to respond to the question whether Muhammad was a Prophet of God or not.

      @عبدالرحمنسيفاو-س8س 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Muhammad never claim that he was God or something like that. If you read Quran you will find that very clear. Also if you are exposed at least to the most authentic book of his tradition such as the book of Bukari or Muslim, you will see the clear picture about this great Prophet.

@@عبدالرحمنسيفاو-س8س well, I think Muhammad was a religious reformer, and the belief system that developed under his influence was influenced by versions of Christianity and Judaism, current among the Arabian tribesmen in the sixth century. Once the Islamic Empire expanded the Qur'an was created and ways of life codified to hold it together and distinguish Islam from Judaism and Christianity as these peoples became Subjects. Initially there would not have been such a clear distinction. That's what I think history shows about Islamic origins.

    • @عبدالرحمنسيفاو-س8س

@@jamesupton4996 This is very naive thinking. I know why many said such comments. The only reason to say that is because the similarities between the three religions. But if we think objectively, we must know that the source of the three religions is one. Prophet Muhammed wasn't a first Prophet to be sent by Almighty God, there were many Prophets proceeded him. Thus not necessarily to believe that he was just a reformer. Many new concepts and news were mentioned in the Quran not found in the Bible. So how those concepts and news came to him?
Try to be objective and think out of the frame you are in.

    • @jamesupton4996
      @jamesupton4996 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@عبدالرحمنسيفاو-س8س offhand I can't think of any new religious concepts in the Qur'an. I can see Jewish and Christian influence, and perhaps different emphases, eg. Rejection of the Trinity, and that one unclear verse about the crucifixion of Jesus. I'm not disputing what we know historically about the origins of Islam, I'm interpreting it as an historical phenomenon, a religious movement, of that time and place and subsequently.

    • @عبدالرحمنسيفاو-س8س
      @عبدالرحمنسيفاو-س8س 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@jamesupton4996 That is your thinking, however, still that will not change the fact that Islam is not something new but rather it is the religion of all Prophets of God including Jesus. As I said the similarities found in the three religions not necessarily make them copy from each other. Otherwise we can then say even Christianity was copied from Judaism or even from Hinduism since there some similarities between the two creeds !

Wow, Paul what can I say. Its a breath of fresh to air to hear an academic and historian being so honest as this guy is. The problem is and still remains, there is no simple answers for the most fundamental questions in christianity. If this is what it's like speaking to a guy who is more versed than most church pasters in your Neighbourhood and he advised to speak to another 40 learned people of his qualifications and status before making a decision. I can honestly say christianity is an evolution of ideas and none of them know what they are talking about in simple terms.

Brother Paul, I would suggest before anyone reads Dale Allison's book on the resurrection, read the work of Sheik Ahmad Deedat entitled "Who Moved the Stone". The most important takeaway from the resurrection story will be there. No fancy logic-illogical confusion, just simple plain English!

Sheikh Ahmad Deedat was wonderful, may he rest in Allah's Noor. Dale Allison is a world renown Christian Scholar working in a University that trains Priests. If we cite one of these books it will be treated as anti-Christian propaganda by Christians while if the other book is cited then even Christians will have to take notice.

One of the comments was asking Paul to point the audience in the direction of Ahmed Deedats book. Atila was responding saying that this could be considered malicious by Christians, so why not point the Christian audience towards Christian scholarly works which achieve the same goal but will have far more credibility with the Christian audience?

Can u imagine the priest training more priests with the same doctrine which for us who has the truth is sad because they will be lost in their supposed belief! Sheikh Ahmad Deedat is trying to break that ignorance! @@mindexcursion9856 No Deedat didn't have any such knowledge and the reason is simple - the tradition in Islam taken from Surah 4:157 is a complete fabrication, 600 years after the event. If you study Surah 4:157 you will see that there are ZERO details about anything that happened at the crucifixion of Jesus. The following details are conspicuously ABSENT:
      - who was crucified
      - when was he crucified
      - how was he crucified
      - by whom was he crucified
      - why was he crucified
      - how did the Romans not realise it wasn't Jesus? Were they fools or professional crucifiers?
      - why did Allah deceive Jesus's mother Mary, making her watch her beloved son be tortured to death, while it was only an illusion to make her suffer!
      - why did Allah tell no one that he was only deceiving them, for 600 years?
      - why did Allah cause Christianity to be created by causing this illusion, and then afterwards condemning the Christians he had created through his deception?
......the one thing you get from this verse is that whoever wrote it, did NOT know the answers to the above Questions!!!!

Back in 1981 my faith in the bible was on shaky ground. Then I took a class with a brilliant young scholar only a few years older than me, Baruch Halpern, a student of Frank Moore Cross. His Introduction to the Old Testament course changed my life and completely renewed my interest in the bible and religious life and study (I was raised Anglican). Although I was unable to pursue my post graduate degrees I kept up my biblical studies and renewed that interest again more seriously in 2014. Dale Allison was one scholar I had to catch up on, and his "Constructing Jesus" was a compelling cover to cover read. I look forward to this conversation.

the topic really interesting. Paul thank you for hosting Dr. Allison for this event. I am as a prophet's tradition critic who studies the hadith, I can say that the Islamic methodology of text criticism and chains of narrators is a very unique and effective solution to distinguish between what is really had been said by Prophet and what not. The problem with gospels and others Christian traditions that never had such essential information. Therefore, all stories came down to us are doubtful and cannot be trusted. In case of Islam we luckily got things in place. Since this is the situation there must be a permanent solution for such complicated issue. That solution came from God. It is the last message of God to all mankind. All questions that lurk in minds of people from different cultures and religions had been answered in the most authentic book which is the Quran.
I suggest to make it short, just read it with open mind and open heart and you will find the truth.
Many thanks for you Paul and your guest Dr. Allison.

Paul, I asked for this in the comments of a couple of previous videos of yours but you likely missed it so here it is again...
Please make an episode on how you read effectively. You seem to effectively consume an enormous amount of books in a relatively short period of time. How do you do it? How do you approach a new book? What is your mental process? Do you ever read more than one book simultaneously? Or do you focus on one book at a time? Do you take notes throughout? What do you do after you’ve finished reading a book? Do you go over it again? Do you summarise it’s main points? Anything you can share about your process would be fantastic and would help a great deal.
    Many thanks in advance!!

I don't know if there really is "the most knowledgeable historian on the topic of Jesus' resurrection" but many scholars do put forth some highly reasonable statements. @@johnbrzykcy3076 Yes, scholars like Professor Gary Habermas, Dr Mike Licona, Dr Richard Bauckham, Simon Gathercole, and many others, believe that Jesus was crucified and after the crucifixion, and his death on the cross, finalised by spearing into the chest (which leads to quick death), that Jesus was seen after 3 days of being in the tomb, outside of the tomb appearing to as many as 500 people. There's a simple logic about this and it is this - if Jesus was crucified his followers and disciples would have "come to the end of the road" literally if this was the end of everything! There would be no further followers of Jesus, no 'believers', no Christianity and no Christians - period! It was a shameful humiliating death for their master , teacher and leader! Tacitus the Roman historian captures this historical period in his writing Annals 15:40 when he said that Jesus was crucified by Pontius Pilate and that ended his following.....but it quickly "broke out again"! Jesus's crucifixion should have been the end of it - but his resurrection appearances meant that Christian beliefs were born and spread rapidly from then on, right into Rome!

@@peaceinjesus5221 also a sideote, there's a reason why jesus was crucified. if they really wanted to kill him, they wouldve cornered him on the streets or even just commit a normal murder. crucifications at that time indicated that the crucified person was cursed, and the jews wanted to prove that this person is not the messiah and therefore inflicted upon him a "cursed death". However in Islam, God is the best of planners and he did not allow that to happen, instead he raised jesus and the jews chose another man amongst them who god made a lookalike of jesus (i also remember something about the curves of the feet of the crucified person and they had some differences from the real jesus)

@@sweetmelon3365 re: "if they really wanted to kill him, they would've cornered him on the streets or even just commit a normal murder." >> well two things here....
      a) this was attempted several times unsuccessfully according to the gospels. On at least one occasion, Jesus disappeared out of sight, while they were trying to stone him! On another occasion a mob were seeking to kill him and he walked straight through the middle of them untouched! Apparently it wasn't so easy to kill Jesus at all! - and the reason? Everything was being carefully planned to the moment of his death! In the gospels, everything is happening at EXACTLY THE CORRECT TIME!
      b) Jesus was not to die by mobs or a murderer, but he had to die by crucifixion EXACTLY as depicted in Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53. Everything in Jesus's life was a fulfilment of the Hebrew scriptures, even his death by crucifixion.
re: "the crucified person was cursed, and the jews wanted to prove that this person is not the messiah" >> It actually proved the opposite! Why? There are 2 portraits of the Messiah in the Hebrew scriptures:
      i) Messiah ben David - the Kingly Messiah who will rule the Nations from Jerusalem
ii) Messiah ben Yosef - the Suffering Servant Messiah who will suffer and die for the sins of his people - Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22
Jesus only fulfilled (ii) the Suffering Servant Messiah, dying for the sins of others, as per Isaiah 53. If Jesus wasn't the King of Israel and he wasn't the Suffering Messiah, then by definition of Scripture, he isn't the Messiah at all and that means the Quran has 11 errors in it stating that Jesus is the Messiah when by Islam's claim, he is not the Messiah because he wasn't crucified.
re: "instead he raised jesus and the jews chose another man amongst them who god made a lookalike of jesus" >> You know the problems this idea makes don't you?
      a) Allah is UNJUST because he made another man suffer the sentence that was passed upon Jesus, when the other man was innocent of the charges of Jesus and was wrongly and unjustly crucified!
      b) Allah deceived all those witnessing the crucifixion, both those who crucified him and those who wept for Jesus! This means Allah cannot ever be trusted, because he is a deceiver and if he deceived those people, he can deceive even his own followers, the Muslims!
      c) Allah deceived Jesus's mother Mary and cruelly made here watch her beloved son, being tortured to death on a cross when it wasn't Jesus! Allah never told Mary and Mary went to her grave in sorrows mourning in her sadness and distress!
      d) Allah deceived all those who watched and believed Jesus was crucified and who became Christians, making them become Christians and Allah made Christianity, knowing what its beliefs and doctrines would be. Later Allah condemned the Christians for being Christian so that he can send them to Hell for Shirk to be roasted over and over with replacement skins for eternity! Bit Allah was the one who caused it all, because he is "the best of planners" and so knew everything beforehand!
      e) Allah even deceived Jesus's friends who loved Jesus and both Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimethea were fools because they didn't recognise that it wasn't their friend Jesus when they buried him!
      f) Now because of the Quran's version of the story, the crucifixion makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER! Allah is supposed to be "the best of planners" but instead sent Jesus on a failed mission, that nearly got him crucified, so Allah made an innocent man be unjustly crucified instead! Now the Islamic story means that Instead of God planning the crucifixion for the redemption of mankind, Allah planned a mission for Jesus which went wrong and was unsuccesful and Allah bundled and made a complete mess of everything, only just managing to rescue Jesus! What this means is that the crucifixion now makes NO SENSE whatsoever! This means that Allah here not only created deceit, but he created utter confusion and failure!!

@Hussain Fahmy: Allah existed before Islam and was one of the 360 pagan gods the pagans worshipped. Allah is not Yahweh (God). Similarly, Isa is not Yeshua (Jesus). We know that Muhammad's first "revelation" from Allah filled him with terror that he was demon- possessed. And we also know that Muhammad received a legitimate message from Shaitan for Muslims to pray to al-Lat, al-'Uzza, and Manat, the three goddesses favored by the pagan Quraysh, as intercessors before Allah. Need I say more?

So now every community will have a God and there are thousands of communities and so called Thousands of God heads .

Free choice is the curtain we need to pull back to see the greater 'higher' truth.
If a person truly 'under'-stands, they know to 'look up' and stand for the 'higher' principles that unfold as our 'under'-standing comes into line with true re-spect for the 'higher' truth.
The 'higher' reason why why words like 'under' are in the words understanding. They reflect a higher truth that can guides us to the straight path.
Our Creator has not left us in ignorance, we choose it, or we can acknowledge his wisdom is in all things even our modern English language which act as a gauge of our human ability to comprehend the higher spiritual cause behind all that exists.

Regarding Dale's comment's/question on what would Matthew's view about Trinity be and gave 4 guess responses. I think a key point of distinct that needs to be made is ... Who is actually responding to the Question? Matthew the disciple of Jesus, who supposedly compiled the Hewbrew/Aramaic sayings of Jesus? or the author of the Greek Canonical Gospel of Matthew? as we know they are very distinct and not the same person.. I think a response to the trinity, Mathew the disciple of Jesus would reply with 1st response Dale gave, where as the Author of Greek Matthew could reply with any of the 4 responses Dale gave :) making important distinction in who is responding to Dale's question is a key point to note :)

@Let Me Talk for quran all manuscripts point inly to 8th century... Surprisingly haufsa copy, 5/ 7 uttman copies which were sent to different places are missing without even a mild trace.... Ie., no original to verify according to scholarship.
We know uttman had copies and haufsa had a written copy but not found till date. Islamic text reliabilitis based on single source ie., Mohammed... The original single source is lost/ destroyed by uttman and company or missing.
Christian source of preservation is diverse source... New testament has 27 books to talk bout Jesus divinity. If 20 books are lost still 7 will prove it.
Bible is a compilation of many books by different authors. New testament is not dictation book by God. So not verbatim by verbatim. It is narration by different authors and we believe in inspiration, but individual writes using his language, style of writing, ... So we have different compilers and writers,...
But all writers are clear about Jesus divinity... And scholarship accepts it. That is why Christians have no problem with some Bible having extra books in its compilation.
It is for Muslim the believe
      1."every prophet a book"
      2. Allah dictates "so verbatim by verbatim" So no change is possible and only Arabic etc.
      3. So for you original is important because you believe in "only Mohammed" for quran and haddis.
      4. All original manuscript and first written quran lost or destroyed purposely and hence scholarship have difficulty to check or verify verbatim by verbatim same or not.
      5. Injeel introduced by Muslim and claimed dro be lost without a trace...
      6. Allah protects and copy is available in heaven.
      7. Many abrogations are done in haddis
      8. Many sahih haddis are getting knocked out by Muslim scholarship of 21 th century.
      9. Preservation of quran and haddis were done only by Muslims under kings so how it got lost?
      10. Chain of narration is by arabs, and haufs quran is perfect but haufs is a lier🙃 and his haddis is rejected.
      11. Contradictions in text...like sun setting, adult breast suckling, 4 wives for men, creation and order, jazia, fight till the last days, pretend to be a friend with Jews and Christian, apostasy punishment, claiming no sacrifice is possible but instead of Jesus someone like Jesus got crucified, satanic versus, etc...
12.Scholarship is after these kind of controversies of Islamic text
Your criteria asre applicable only to Islamic text ours is different.... Because both have different philosophy when we talk about nature of preservation.
In Christianity we don't have that criteria.., everyone knows there are minor changes in number of books or different manuscript available.... This is because many independent sources and each author write what information he was having.... Hence now scholarship has lot of source to check and cross check the divinity of Jesus and majority of them accept it.
Our preservation perfectly matches our belief and scholarship....
Your preservation perfectly matches Islamic belief but not scholarship....
So problem in validity and reliability. ... And scholarship is now digging deep and found "the holes in the narrative" - Yasir Quadi
In other words we don't claim audio recording of the text to have same script... Different writers and have different script but the story remains the same.
You claim audio recording of your text. Single source Mohammed so source is necessary without which no way to verify.
And the surprise is Calif uttman burnt manuscript... Why? Absolutely needed in this context, how can Mohammed verified text be burnt by a Muslim cailf.. How?
All originals gone like injeel. And even now many qurans.... Haufs and walsh are not same...

A stimulating dialogue. The point about an early “high” Christology in Paul, and the pre-Pauline hymn of Phil.2, was significant and well-taken. (I’m convinced myself that there are aspects of such a Christology in the synoptics too, e.g. the Son of Man sayings.) You should have taken the chance to assure Prof Allison that Thomas Aquinas too is among the Mutants…. I’m sure I’ll be watching this one again.

I pretty much agree with you. I also think there could have been a "high Christology" in the Synoptic Gospels but they seem to have been "hidden." What do you think? So you correlate the "son of man" sayings by Jesus with His divinity?

    • @inspectortelford
      @inspectortelford 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@johnbrzykcy3076 I'd associate the Son of Man sayings with the mysterious figure of Daniel 7, who seems to have at least quasi-divine characteristics - all peoples "worship" him (verb latreuo in Septuagint) and his kingdom is eternal and indestructible. In Luke 24:69-70, the titles Son of Man and Son of God are correlated, and interpreted by Jesus' enemies as "blasphemy" on Jesus' part. So "Son of Man" seems a high title. It's maybe odd but "Son of Man" in the Synoptics seems to function rather like "Son of God" in John. I don't know why in other respects the Synoptics seem less robust than John, but here at least is a rich vein of exalted Son of Man Christology. I wonder whether apologetic interests might somehow have motivated what you call a "hidden" quality in the Synoptics.

'Standing' up for the values and principles we hold is only half of what the word true under-'standing' really means.
The other part being under, refers to accepting our true place in this life, being humble to lower ourselves below the Will of Our Creator, Who has a plan for His universe we can be part of is we truly do understand.
Only by accepting He Is The Of everything, The Only One we are to bow to and worship.
Not the doctrines, temptation or distractions of other men and women, who would dis-tract us away from true sub-mission, to be the individuals we were designed as, to think for ourselves and bring our own individual contribution to this world we were created to be a part of.
By re-cognising we are not just here by some mistake that evolved from nowhere.
That every single one of us who recognises reality does has a choice to follow life's higher path where a place waiting for us to take up.
A promise made at the foundation of this universe.
This (spiritual re-birth) is where the seed of truth begins to grow in our lives and where our true re-connection back to where we came from starts to heal the rift between us and Our Maker.
What re-ligion really means, to reconnect with the greater hidden truth that towers high up above us, hidden only by our own ignorance.
    Unable to truly under-stand.

Somewhere on either this or another video Allison refers to Volume One as one of Allison's works of "juvenalia". If W.D. Davies co-wrote the book, this doesn't seem to be a work of juvenalia. It's almost as if W.D. Davies had no part in the work. Maybe I missed something, but I didn't even hear Allison mention W.D. Davies' part in writing the commentary.

@@charlievaughan1308 I'm a Muslim and I'll try to be as rational as I could.
So it is written in the Quran that Jesus was prophesized in the previous scriptures (Torah, Psalm, you know this). But not only Jesus. I also once read book of Isaiah that told me, He will sent a 'spirit of deep sleep' to brought the law (Torah literally means 'law') back to the Israelites because it was forgotten. Muslim traditions believed this to be Ezra the scribe. Now I know that your exegets will say no, it doesn't mean that, but you know. Just to proof, earlier scriptures will prophesized future prophets. You can believe it or not.
Muhammad was also written, even by name. Proof of this: there are Jews living in Arabia in his time who still uphold this view. And submitted right away when they hear Muhammad declared his prophethood.
Why 600 years? Well, even with Abraham, Isaac & Ishmael in the same timeline, these people still dispute over the genuinity of Abraham. Or I should say, Ishmael or Isaac is the firstborn. That's about 2000 BC. 2600 years prior Muhammad. You can still see remnants of their dispute in the book of Genesis. People called the 'prophets' are the most devout to God in Islam. There's a concept of their sinlessness (Maksum), as there will be no way of them to disobey (and if they did, they repent and Allah forgave them). Why Allah wait for 2600 years to reveal the truth between them for people to know?

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
This is the great commission for salvation of the nations given to Jesus' disciples. Jesus authorized his disciples to go forth teaching people what Jesus taught them, baptizing them and not to worry because Holy Spirit (who Jesus has and can give to everyone who asks) will guide and comfort them.
