This is what Snowmobiling use to be, and should be!! I can't afford a 12-18K Snowmobile! I currently have a 98' Formula Z670 that I use for Ice fishing, Ditch Banging, and Bar Hopping when the situation presents it's self!! Love the Videos, and the Content! Keep doing what you're doing and the Subs will Follow!

$12K. I was at the cat dealer and a T-Cat was was well over $30K. I think it was almost $35K. The cheapest sled they had was 17K. Made me want to 🤮.
I can afford it but why?
Most of the people that buy those are the citiots that have ruined snowmobiling.

What a great video overall Pete (as usual), but what a great & timely tutorial for me. I have a mint 1998 Vmax 600 with 3200 km’s that starts up first crank and runs so smooth….but 25 years old and the regular maintenance is what’s critical at her age, especially that drive bearing which I have never looked at. Got to love Yamaha’s

I had a 1997 VMax 700 and loved the sound of that sled. I wish they would bring the triples back but fat chance of that due to everyone wants light weight these days.
    Great video as usual Pete
I want to add, since I have been following your channel I am amazed at your knowledge. Sleds, ATVs, cars, trucks and special built units. You have a special talent!

  • @johnferris2919

One of the few design issues with this vintage VMax was the left and right steering arms. They let moisture in via a drain hole and trap it there so the arms rust from the inside out…..not a great experience when an arm lets go at 80 kph. I replaced both of them and pumped both with gear oil to help stop the interior rust issue.

Another fun video, thanks Pete! All day swear fest, have had my share of those in my 40 plus years of wrenching! Never had good luck breaking those locking collars loose on those drive bearings. Was talking to you as you removed the bearing that if you're going through the trouble of removing it to check it, may as well replace it no matter what! Haven't had much Yamaha sled experience, bikes, yes. They seem like solid units. Those carbs look more complex than the standard Mikuni. I recall a guy working on marine Yamaha 2 stroke carbs saying they have several circuits, makes them run smooth but also a bear to clean! Keep em coming my friend!

    Great Vid Pete 👍
I had. SXR 600 for years. Never a problem. The maintenance you guys did I did kind of regularly. Got sold on the new stuff. It takes 15 min to get the panels off without breaking something or taking the F’n seat off to get to the battery. I really miss my Vmax
Open the hood & it’s there.

great video. word of advise when removing studs, i just use a blow torch heat up the nut/stud until the nylon starts melting and then use the impact the they come right off. i rarely have to use a cut off wheel unless one is bent. i've done this and reused studs 2 or 3 times on new tracks

Id love to own another Redhead!
😁 Awesome entertainment and learning video. My technical experience is not that of yours which I wish there was a road from where I live to your town for alot of the maintenance requests that are beyond my abilities. Great work those redheads are the best most fuel efficient sleds made for the horsepower that they put out and most never believe me how fuel efficient they are compared to other new sleds built today of lesser quality.
I just got back from my hunting and gathering for my winter needs. Ive done some preventive maintenance to my 440 Cat/Logger and I've noticed that the strain i put it through. Caused me to change all my bearings to be ready for this winter. I think ill stick with my Jag due to the ease of maintenance and prices for new sleds nowadays is way to steep and im paying $8.10 a gallon for gas and $8.50 for heating fuel. Keep these awesome vids coming, Very entertaining.

We were on a snowmobile trip, heading south from Cochrane Ont the trail crosses or used to, the Mattagami river. We got to the river and it was flowing, full of broken ice sheets but flowing fast. So what do we do, cross or turn back. Decided to cross, I was going first on my 98 T-cat. The shoreline is sloped down to the water level so I was off the throttle going down the bank when I hit the water I opened the throttle and nothing! Hammered on the throttle off and on multiple times till it fired. Once across I disconnected these switches permanently. Had occasional problems with them before but that was enough. Love the channel by the way, watched your video on the Ram exhaust manifold replacement, well mine is warped too.....I need a good mechanic, are ya busy, LOL.

Just a little question 🤔 With so many bad studs😅,wouldn’t it be better to change them all. And if you don’t won’t your track not connect evenly to ground on a pull. I like your humor and expertise.👍

    • @rednecksdirtyhands
      @rednecksdirtyhands  ปีที่แล้ว

yeah normally I'd swap out the track on a sled like that because of all the missing studs and a few pull throughs but because he's just planning on using it around his hunt camp and not really putting any major km on it just removing the bad studs for no is all we needed to do. I mean the cost of a track and studs these days is out to lunch so for now it's just sleddin on a beer budget 🤣🍻

should be able to hit close to max compression in 5 tugs...if it's low after 5 then she's gettin tired. had sleds in the past with low compression after 5 tugs and hard to start with the pull cord but would start with the electric start cause it could spin it faster..but yeah might be able to get a few more psi after more tugs for sure 🍻

Put a little valve grinding compounds on those questionable screws before you even attempt to try em. Old guy i worked with on military aircraft showed me that in 82. Always got a tube of vg compound in my screwdriver drawer ever since

Got a 2001 mtn max 700 triple. Went to do the carbs and the idle adjuster bolt on the carbs came out of the nut. Cant seem to find a way to compress the springs enough or get the bolt to thread back in. Any suggestions?

    Great job with your video
But i've gotta laugh how you guys slam Polaris.
That vmax is basically an updated 17 year old Polaris Indy 500.
    Trailing arm suspension.
    3 cyl liquid cooled.
    Hydraulic brakes.
    Running board heat exchangers.
    "Yamaha triple sound"
All the above were on the market in 1981 boys.
