Star Trek is a show that deserves redo reactions. As someone who's watched them since the 60's, and couldn't count how many times I've seen any one episode, other than to say - I've seen TOS Star Trek enough to know it's like nothing else before nor since, on multiple levels. It's modern Shakespeare. These are morality plays. These are delivered, in part, as a play - it comes from the era of TV, but for TOS Trek, it's part of what makes it high level art, not just, a TV show.

10 Memorable Moments of Bunnytail Reacts to TOS Season 1:
    10. Her devotion to Janice Rand.
    9. Commenting on the Talosians' buttheads.
    8. Not wanting to see Spock go blind in Operation Annihilate. Plus not liking the numerous plot holes in the episode
    7. Referring to the Guardian Of Forever as the Big Butthole.
    6. The Women!!
    5. Laughing at the giant male member in What Are Little Girls Made Of.
    4. Referring to the Horta as a "Soon-to-be Schmitter s**tter".
    3. Figuring out the ending to The Menagerie.
    2. Not figuring out the ending to City On The Edge Of Forever.
    1. Her reaction to the ending City On The Edge Of Forever, plus her discussion of the episode in this video.

I was only 5 years old when Star Trek went off the air and I probably never got to see it in its original run but it went into syndication in 69 or 70 so for me the show was always there. Everyday after school from the 1st grade til I graduated high school, I watched this show until I had seen every episode probably 30 or 40 times.
That tends to shape a person's perspective of a TV show in a way that's not the same when you see it only once.

I'm a thorny gen' X'r that watched these when they were first released as reruns in the early 70s. I was seven at the time. The blend of concepts that were well above my head then, the incredible lush technicolor design, the gorgeous, Hellenistic women, the shocking violence and often heartbreaking drama turned me into a science fiction and crime cartoonist and painter.
Your videos gratify me deeply, knowing that someone of your sophistication is a facet of today's generation, and has an appreciation for thoughtfully paced abstract melodrama.

That was a really solid list. Nice to see how often you praised Shatner's acting. As I'm sure you know, it's a lot more common in pop culture to make fun of his performances, and sometimes you might see that over the top acting in episodes, but for the most part he's a lot better than most people give him credit for.

A little story for you kid. , but the very first Star Trek episode I ever saw was Charlie X. This is back in 1966. Yes I'm old. This is as a boy of 11. I had never even heard of Star Trek then. Lost In Space was the more heard of Space Adventure of that time and we had only 3 tv stations at time CBS, NBC and ABC. In my area you could only get CBS, Then one summer I went to visit my Grandmother and I got to see the campier Batman series, which I was so excited to watch because of all the hype, and never so disappointed, I thought it was more serious., but that's another story. The one summer night a friend of mine were watching tv and suddenly the Star Ship Enterprise came at the screen. My friend shouted excitedly , "It's Star Trek!" I said what the heck is Star Trek?
Then I got to watch it, Charlie X of course, and this was the first Sci Fi adventure show that made me feel like this was in the future. There were no shows including Lost INn Space that gave me that feel. Any way this episode is a bit closer to my heart, as it was my first, but can see why you put it in your lower list. But I thought you might enjoy my story.
By the way I really enjoy your channel. 😊😊😊

Are you my twin? 1967 for me, 13 years old. Had driven across Canada with my father to attend Expo '67 in Montreal. Met with some distant relatives there. 'Til then, was also nursed on Batman and Lost in Space which were okay fun but certainly not profound. (The Outer Limits was more satisfactory in that regard). Then one of my 'cousins' said 'It's Star Trek night' so we gathered round the TV. While my father pretty much ignored it, we kids became absolutely transfixed. With stars in our eyes, we knew, WE KNEW, the landscape of TV had changed forever! Never saw those relatives again, but the bonding we felt over ST that night is a feeling that remains with me to this day.

One thing I like to mention about Star Trek TOS, is the fantastic incidental music. They employed many excellent composers, who brought forth different compositions for different episodes, like the music for Finnegan, in "Shore Leave", and the music for the "rubic's cube", in "The Corbomite Manuever". I hope these excellent musical cues have helped in your enjoyment of this series so far.

Your point about _The Naked Time_ is one I try to keep in mind when giving people a short TOS watch list. Episodes like _Mirror Mirror_ and _Amok Time_ are great. But they only make sense when you know who these characters are. A list can't start with everyone acting crazy and out of character. It's smart to keep that in mind when building any watch list.

      Top 3 in this order:
1 - Mirror mirror is the best episode of the entire original series, IF you're a real Sci fi buff.
To have a parallel universe with dictator empires on one side, and a democracy on the other, is a MIND BOGGLING idea for our science is already dwelling on ideas like that today!.The fight was memorable with kirk breaking an alien skull on spocks head.
2 - Corbomite device was the other. With a real terrorizing condition from a terrifying alien threatening to destroy the ship and giving them a countdown to their demise, was terrifying. Baily should have gotten an oscar for his rageful moment.
3 - And, of course City on the edge, which was the most painful ending of all of them.

I think that it is logical that feelings about a season of episodes should change. We're not the same people from day to day after all, and perspectives change. This whole approach that you've had to these shows is very different from most people as most of us saw these in syndication where the order was of no importance at all. Most people saw these in a jumbled order. Additionally, some of us saw these in a time where TV wasn't serialized. I think that shows being serialized is something that current generations just assume. It definitely wasn't the case when I was young and such shows were called "soap operas" in my time. I think has a larger impact on people than most people realize. I'm glad that "A Taste of Armageddon" is up there on your list. As I said before it is an episode that comes up in my mind all the time as events play out around the world. Given your heartfelt words on "City on the Edge of Forever." I think you should watch Charlie Chaplin's end speech from "The Great Dictator".... look for the version with the Hans Zimmer music. As much as I like hearing things in the original context the music adds I think as it really does strike some emotions.

TOS is like watching a seed grow into a flower. Even episodes I may not particularly like have scenes where Uhura or Sulu grow their iconic characters. Hearing McCoy say "He's dead, Jim" or Spock reveal some repressed human part of himself, just make every episode worthwhile.

I'm glad that you liked "A Taste of Armageddon". I think because Star Trek was sold as "Wagon Train" to the stars, it allowed for the writing and characters to be more developed and more than superficial. It isn't always "We're good and they're bad". Sometimes people are just desperate.
So, it makes sense that you picked "Devil in the Dark" as your favorite, because in that episode, the creature, the "monster" is desperate, which had to be the first time in TV history any story ever had sympathy for a creature over humans.

It's great to get a different take from someone as to which episodes were their 10 favorite. On most lists of longtime Star Trek viewers, both Balance of Terror and Space Seed would not only be in their Top 10 from Season 1, but their Top 10 for the entire series and maybe the entire franchise. It was great to see that both A Taste of Armageddon and The Devil In The Dark in your Top 10, with the latter as your Number 1. That episode is perhaps the most underrated one in the series. I think this is actually a pretty good list. I can see a few "Star Trek" fans disagreeing with maybe one or two choices, but objectively speaking, it mostly makes sense, especially coming from one going through the show for the first time.
Most of the 'lower 5' and honorable mentions are episodes I've noticed are either early entries in the show or episodes that provide setup for future stories and character development and worldbuilding--episodes that are strong in concept and do some diving into the characters, but do display how much the first season was like the learning curve season. Most things are put together, but others need to be developed while the show is being made, in a very "seat-of-the-pants" manner. A television production cliché as old as the hills!
The 'Top 5' episodes are largely episodes that were mostly worked on during the latter half of the season or had scripts and direction that the producers, writers, and crew put the most effort into--a sign that they mostly got through the majority of whatever bugs they needed to get past and that they will potentially have a better understanding of everything that works and what doesn't work when they get that sweet, sweet, renewal for next season.

I think you did a wonderful job and I don’t disagree with anything you said here. I think in fact your admiration and appreciation of what people see in the series and finding your own perspective on it is what makes you doing this so special. I hope that most Star Trek fans have grown to value the spirit of the series in that there is so much for everyone to enjoy and find their own favorite moments and stories. And although sometimes there is a little geek-elitism that happens, deep down most Star Trek fans have always tried to foster acceptance of everyone.

    TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOUR ANALYSIS!
TOS' 'The Naked Now' should've been a later episode in the season, not the forth. As the audience had yet to know the quirks and nuances of each of the characters.
And 'The Devil in the Dark' for me was the 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. First impression glance is to see the hideous looking Horta. Later is to understand that she is an indigenous inhabitant of the planet, and she's just trying to protect her nest/eggs. Enjoyable positive ending also.

That actress was Grace Lee Whitney. I met her when I was just a kid. When I was about 12 years old she and her husband, Jack were friends with my grandparents because they went to the same church and met there. I remember they had 2 kids and 2 big great danes because they did visit my grandparents now and then. It was years later when my grandfather died and I saw her again at his funeral in 1974. I was sifting through my mom's pictures and notebooks after she passed away last year and I found the funeral booklet that has signatures of Grace and her husband in it. I live in the Northeast now so I never see people in show biz anymore.

The mark of a great series is that your perspective can change as you age. I recently re-watched a show I hadn't seen since I was a kid. Although I still liked my original favorite episode, I rediscovered several that I believe now are actually deeper. Can't wait to watch it again in another few years and see if my perspective has changed!😊

Shevat OST was the perfect BGM for the Star Bunny Trek Awards 2024! 😻 Even Ramsus's "Elements" team members admitted to copying "Star Trech" but that they were "changing names/spellings" like the term "Positronic-photon Brain" to not get in any "legal" trouble hehe 😸

Loved your analysis of season 1. Two of my personal favorite episodes were Balance of Terror and Errand of Mercy due to the initial introduction to the enemies of the Federation and humanity. This side of Paradise was interesting in that although they didn't have sickness, war or any other large scale problems, they did have lovely flowers though!! One would be amazed at how much you can learn from watching Star Trek. Physics, history, languages, astronomy, biology, strategy and tactics, even just being a decent human being. Star Trek opens the door for all of us to become better people.
Edit: your criticism of "The Naked Time" is spot on. It definitely should have been saved for later in the series because it really only hits the right way when the watcher is rather familiar with all the characters.
Edit of the edit: if you enjoyed The Cage, you're going to absolutely LOVE Strange New Worlds.

I've loved Star Trek TOS since it first came out, I was 6 when it first aired, and my family had a color console TV, which was rare back then, since a lot of people still had black and white TVs. But I grew up with this show, along with Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Batman with Adam West, and the Lone Ranger! I witnessed the first moon landing, and loved science fiction, spacecrafts and aviation ever since! Thanks for your videos!!

I remember being impressed with it on first viewing and later buying it on VHS tape (yes, LOL, I'm old...ish when individual episodes first came out on separate VHS tapes). To add some historical content for your info: the creator of Star Trek, *Gene Roddenberry,* got his start as a writer for the famous TV show, *"Have Gun -- Will Travel".* Roddenberry won an award for this writing in 1957, the "Writers Guild of America -- Best-Written Script in a TV Western" award, which gave him his start. His episode was called "Helen of Abajinian". It was the 16th episode of season 1. "Have Gun -- Will Travel" was a highly successful show which produced a total of 225 episodes, winning many awards, including Emmys. You should check it out some time, perhaps starting with the 16th episode above, or at Season 1 Episode 1, if you prefer.

Right now the art generated by current A.I. isn't all that impressive. But it WILL get better as computers get FASTER. Watch the 60 minutes episode about quantum computing. We're about to enter an unimaginable era of technological advancement. If things like warp drive ARE possible, these new computers will figure it out. In a FLASH.✨🛸✨

I know this might sound silly, but before the Jeff Bezos thing, I read an article where Shatner said something the affect that he'd never been to outer space. The fact that I had to pause for a moment and come to my senses, I believe, is a real testament to the acting ability of Shatner, Nimoy and the surrounding cast. I just didn't want to believe that it wasn't true. Anyway, love your take on your top-ten.

I definitely appreciate this style of video. It doesn't even have to be a list, just a chance to think back on the season, what struck and what missed, and especially how your first reactions settled and changed.
One of the big drawback of the Reaction format is how heavily it biases toward "I've never seen this before, here's my immediate impression". But I don't love the things I see and am blown away by; I love the things I've seen a long time ago and have stuck with me, and the things I've seen over and over and always find something new and interesting in. I don't love Trek because when I first saw it it was the most amazing thing ever, I love it because I've seen it over and over, in different decades of my life, and after that life has been _shaped_ by Trek and the attitudes I've had from watching it. Different facets of episodes come to the fore on one watching or another, or things land differently because you're thinking of another episode (like a later one) and that makes you interpret things differently.
I'm enjoy watching the episodes with you and the "so, what'd you think??" that follows. That's great. But in the long run, it pales next to the "I watched this episode, and it make me re-evaluate this thing from 15 episodes ago", or the "this episode from 3 months ago has really stuck in my head", or the "I loved/hated this thing when I saw it, but it's been on my mind since and now I hate/love it because X".
These comments full of people who love Trek and span an easy half century of ages and time since they first saw it. Because there are things that you see in it and immediately stick with and form you forever. But also because there are things that change on reconsideration and rewatching, for better and worse, and let you keep finding _new interest_ (and not just memories revisited) no matter how long it's been or how many times you've watched the same 55+ year old low budget TV show.

There's really no right or wrong to a list like this, and there are SO many good S1 episodes it's really hard to pick. Definitely appreciate your list and the thought you put into it. We all like what we like and as long as you can explain it well, no one has the right to argue about it. Personally, I liked Arena a lot as well, but everything you chose was stellar, too. It's just cool to see someone experience the show for the first time and appreciate it's overall greatness. Your reactions are some of the best I've seen, to anything. They're honest, funny, very insightful and intuitive as well. Looking forward to Season Two!

Thanks for your reactions! Most Trekkies "generally" agree on the greatest episodes of all time, but almost never will we all have the exact same top ten list for a given season. Devil in the Dark is in my top ten, but not number one. However, your strong reaction to it compelled me to think about it in more detail. They were forced to kill the salt vampire, so the Horta is the first endangered species they DID save. Having the Horta work with the miners in the end was an elegant solution that didn't seem forced, since the Horta are intelligent. Also the miners themselves showing us that not all jobs of the future are glamorous. It's still not number one for me, but having reconsidered a few things I might bump it up a few notches!

It's a great list and for something that's out of your comfort zone, you're a natural 👍with the the help of editing of course 😉.
I've come to appreciate different episodes more over the years, as I consume more media. More recent film and tv have either re-enforced my love of a certain theme or storyline in TOS or have made me truly appreciate how creative the TOS was because I've never come across that kind of storyline later down the line.
Some episodes are classics that will forever resonate with any generation that watches it, whilst others are throwaway episodes that don't achieve much philosophically but help to build a connection with the characters.

You have been hitting the mark all the way throughout the series. i truly enjoyed watching not only your reactions but also your reviews about each one. I watch them till the very end, and again even. If you keep your mind open and get off this planetoid thinking, you can see how the Trek Universe, has transcended the primitive ways of thinking we sometimes may find ourselves in. Dropping our old individual patterns that kills us and brings us to explore strange new worlds and seek out new life, that changes us and allows growth in our society of beings. Keep it up, I look forward to more....AB
