Thanks! Yeah, I just taught myself, mainly by watching youtube drummers! The kit is a Roland TD-4kx. I'm not sure if it's still being made since Roland came out with a bunch of new sets recently. The equivalent now might be the TD-11 or something. But for the apartment dweller, Roland electric kits are pretty great! Thanks for watching, and I hope you get a kit soon. It's a great hobby!
Fantastic job! Looks like you're enjoying it. I'm in the same boat, I started learning the guitar a couple years ago and still love it. The problem is, now I want to learn drums. So I went out and bought a new drum kit last week to practice both of them. Love The Cult also. Takes me back to the late 80's, MTv, VHS, and rocking out to my first real stereo. Definitely gonna learn this one!
@CrappyAssDrummer "...from the era when "alternative music" actually meant something, and subculture wasn't mainstream yet." You said it all, man. I'm always glad to see that no matter how many millions of idiots listen to nowadays crap, there will ALWAYS be the 500 who have a good musical taste. Keep it up!
Hehe, thanks! Yeah, I guess I'm doing OK for a late bloomer. Started learning guitar too, which is cutting into the drumming time though! But all in all, you are right, this whole music thing IS a blast - can't think of a better midlife crisis. Hope I can get 38 years of it in! Thanks very much for watching, and for the nice encouragement too!
In the meantime, I've been busy today. Just uploading a drum cover of another Cult song - Rain. Should be up within the hour if the technology holds up!
this is really good I wish I could play it like this its great The wall behind may green screen out if you shine a green light on it to make it even and more vivid then illuminate yourself from the right side with white light so you stand out use a croma key program to sample the wall colour with its colour dropper to take the wall away and your other videos would be behind you ;) but what you have done is great green screen is just another tool for us to play with keep up the good work
A LOT of practice and listening went into this. I hope I got fairly close to the original, which was my goal. Don't put yourself down though - you have some moves! Hmm. I like the green light idea. I might try that. I've tried a fair amount with Sony Vegas chroma keyer and the blue blanket, and it just always seems to take too much time to get it right. I'll do something like that some day though, when I have a bit more patience - sounds like fun! Thanks (again) for watching! Keep on drumming!
HELLO MY FRIEND, MISSED WATCHING YOUR AWESOME DRUMMIN' SKILLS SO POPPED ON TO WATCH THIS ONE SINCE IT'S ONE I WANT TO LEARN ANY HOW - YOU STILL IN CANADA AY!
I started playing drums at the beginning of this year (so a little over 2 months) and can finally play this song pretty good except for the ending. I have the sheet music for the last two bars but they still trip me up. I am also going to learn Rain next, which I see you did as well.
Sound like you are having fun. Excellent. When I have trouble with a particular part of a song, I usually slow it down and try to figure it out that way, and then speed it up until I can do it. Maybe give that a try? Thanks for watching, and good luck!
Hehehe. Thank man. I'm actually quite happy with it :-) But I figured a bit of modesty wouldn't hurt as there are some amazing drummers out there. Thanks for watching!
You don't look like a beginner. I just started and have only a few hours of playing and am trying to learn this song. The snare fills are giving me a hard time but I am getting better.
@CrappyAssDrummer Oh, and one more thing. I've been to a Cult concert in São Paulo a couple years ago, and not even THEIR drummer played it like the original (OK, Tempesta wasn't the drummer when Sanctuary was recorded, but he is right now). So don't worry about it, "original" is a loose word. You did great, man!
Thanks! Yeah, I'm having a blast. I started with guitar too, about 25 years ago, and then stopped for 20 years. For the last year and a half, starting with drums, I've been getting back into everything. I'll send you a personal message with a link to me doing all the parts to this song, using the same drum track, from my other channel, CrummyMusician. Thanks for stopping by! :-)
just clicked on "Like" as I know how it feels to play crappy-ass-drumming myself... good on you for putting yourself out there - best of luck and happy drumming!
@babalufinho Thanks for the link to the Cult video. I see your point. The guitar is significantly different too, eh? I guess they are allowed since they wrote it! :-) No reason to stick to the original I guess. for me, I want to as a way to study new things, so sometimes I try to copy exactly. Glad you liked the other video, and thanks again for the comments! And yes, I love those bands too. I am totally stuck in the 80s!
@CrappyAssDrummer My pleasure! I think you're right. If they played the songs exactly as the album recordings everytime, why bother going to a concert, right?? But I agree, sticking to the original is the best way to learn a song (otherwise you'd go nuts hahaha). I don't play drums, but if you let me give a suggestion, listen to The Cult's songs Nirvana, Moya and especially Horse Nation. I bet they're great to play!! I'm stuck to the 80s too, even though I was born in 1989 :) Have a nice day!
@babalufinho Just gave them a listen. Cool songs! So many things I want to play, but work keeps getting in the way.....I was thinking of trying to cover Rain one of these days, but we'll see when I have time! Glad to hear that there is a "new" recruit to the 80s generation, even if 20 years younger than me! (Lucky!!!)
@babalufinho Interesting, I had heard that live and studio were quite different. But I have always had the studio version in my head since listening to it a million times in high school! I have never seen them live, unfortunately. Hey, do a youtube search for crummymusician (won't let me post the url here...) - the top hit should be me using the same drum track adding the guitar and bass myself too. DEFINITELY "original" is a loose term! Let me know what you think! Thanks again for your comment!
@wendyscampbell Hi! It's a pretty fun mid-life crisis eh? Way more fun than a sports car! I am very happy this was helfpul for you. That's how it's supposed to work, eh? Happy drumming, and I look forward to seeing some of your videos soon! :-)
Hahaha! Yeah, better safe than sorry! ;-) Actually I was trying to prevent the plastic on the hi-hat from getting chewed up, but I like your explanation better!
@CrappyAssDrummer Man, to be honest, it was an OK concert, but that's all. I guess Ian wasn't at his best, sometimes he seemed to have lost himself in the lyrics. If you search for "she sells sanctuary sao paulo", the one I've been to should be the 2nd hit (even though the 1st one has a much better quality). I watched your other video, it was awesome! Well done, really. By the way, I noticed you also like Scorpions and AC/DC, and their drummers don't always stick to the "original" live either.
:-) Thanks! Up until today, I was pretty sure I have the best drum cover of the song on TH-cam. Now I'm not so sure since you do a pretty good job too! Nice kit, man. Might be time to upgrade....Thanks for the subscription. I subscribed to you too. (Montrealers have to stick together, after all.) Good stuff on your channel. I MIGHT still have the best one-man band cover of the song, using the same drum track, on my other channel. I'll send you the link :-) Happy drumming!
SHOULD REFER TO YOU AS "CRAPPYMYASSDRUMMER" LOL I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW MUCH CRAPPIER YOU'VE GOTTEN OVER THE COURSE OF 3 OR 4 YEARS LATER SINCE I FIRST MET YA HAHA!
Hahaha! Love that for my new name! Truth: I think I peaked a few years ago. I was playing all the time then, but for the last few years I just haven't had time or energy to play as much as I used to! I'll have to fix that......
Hi! Sorry for the delay in replying. It's actually NOT a drumless track. I use the original song, but used a software equalizer to turn down the high end (hi-hat, cymbals) and low end (kick). I also mixed the volume of what I was playing higher. I guess the end result worked OK! Thanks very much for watching :-)
Hahaha! No. I just had this dumb idea way back then that covering the hi-hat with cloth might make it last longer, or prevent damage or something like that. That phase, fortunately, didn't last long!
Good question. I think at that time I had some stupid idea that it would protect the plastic of the hi-hat. But I don't bother anymore. It seems to be strong enough! Thanks for watching!
Thanks! Yeah, I just taught myself, mainly by watching youtube drummers! The kit is a Roland TD-4kx. I'm not sure if it's still being made since Roland came out with a bunch of new sets recently. That was a nice cover Terrific job.
Thanks very much, appreciate the comment. I loved this song when it originally came out, so it had to be one of the first I learned! :-)
Great Job. I'm just learning myself and also going through a midlife crisis (43). I love The Cult so you were helpful in my trying to learn this song.
Fantastic job! Looks like you're enjoying it. I'm in the same boat, I started learning the guitar a couple years ago and still love it. The problem is, now I want to learn drums. So I went out and bought a new drum kit last week to practice both of them.

You have inspired me. 55 yrs old, new year resolution, just got back from drum lesson number 1.
Stick with it! It's great fun! So happy that I may have helped you down the path! :-)
In the meantime, I've been busy today. Just uploading a drum cover of another Cult song - Rain. Should be up within the hour if the technology holds up!

great job, only 2 months, your way ahead of the game..
Hehehe, thanks. Mind you, that was a few years ago now and....I'm probably not a whole lot better! ;-) Thanks for watching!
So it is! I didn't know! Thanks for pointing that out, and thanks for watching!

Excellent drumming - and you look like Roger Taylor (Duran Duran) from that angle
I'll settle for Roger, although the girls much preferred John back in the day :-) Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching!
You don't look like a beginner. I just started and have only a few hours of playing and am trying to learn this song. The snare fills are giving me a hard time but I am getting better.
Thanks for your message. Try slowing it down so that the fills are more clear, and then build up speed from there! Thanks for watching!
@CrappyAssDrummer Oh, and one more thing. well done mate, really enjoyed watching this :)
+sam wraith Thanks! Happy to hear it! :-)
this is brilliant keep going its not crap at all
Nice job.
Thank you very much! :-)
Good job bro..a beginner my ass, lol you must have been a drummer in a past life
@babalufinho Thanks for the link to the Cult video. I see your point. The guitar is significantly different too, eh? @babalufinho Hahaha! I'm glad someone picked up on that! Thanks for the comment!

P.S. - were you praying to Billy Duffy at the end there ;-)
Billy is a God! Hehehe :-)
Hahaha! Yeah, better safe than sorry! ;-) Actually I was trying to prevent the plastic on the hi-hat from getting chewed up, but I like your explanation better!
@ShabadooWilkins Hehehe. Thanks sensei! I'll see what I can do about the "broad" without violating TH-cam terms of use. Pasties? ;-)
@CrappyAssDrummer Man, to be honest, it was an OK concert, but that's all. I guess Ian wasn't at his best, sometimes he seemed to have lost himself in the lyrics. Hi,where did you get the drummless track from? Cheers
Hi! Sorry for the delay in replying. It's actually NOT a drumless track. I use the original song, but used a software equalizer to turn down the high end (hi-hat, cymbals) and low end (kick). Is that a paper kit
Hahaha! No. I just had this dumb idea way back then that covering the hi-hat with cloth might make it last longer, or prevent damage or something like that. That phase, fortunately, didn't last long!
pretty good for only playing 2 months...I started playing 2 months ago...I suck
this is a Trojan Hit-Hat!! :--)??
why is your hi hat covered?
Good question. I think at that time I had some stupid idea that it would protect the plastic of the hi-hat. But I don't bother anymore. It seems to be strong enough! Thanks for watching!
CrappyAssDrummer ... No
BadAssDrummer ... ;-))
Hahaha! Great comment! Thanks! Maybe I'll make the change ;-)
give yourself a bit more credit, that wasn't bad at all!
