Fun fact: In the official canon/lore, FF2 takes place at the same time as Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Guy was after bison which is why he’s not in FF2.

That's awesome! It always bothered me that Guy wasn't in Final Fight 2 when the story greatly revolves around his family. This explanation goes a long way to rectifying Guy's missing presence in FF2.

Streets of Rage and Cody from Final Fight and the game itself is inspired by a US film called "Streets of Fire", a flop in the US but a big hit in Japan.
Cody is not only based on Cody from the film but named after him as well.

Supposedly it is not. According to an interview. It's all just coincidence even tho there are very clear simalarities. On the other hand, except for the name cody, all the elements of it are common enough. In Double Dragon, they had similar things. And there's no wrestling mayor or Ninja in Streets of fire.

  • @dreamcastfan

I’ve always had a real soft spot for Final Fight 2, I’ve even got the bootleg JAMMA board version of it, but it’s not a game loved by many. While it does fix all the things omitted from the FF1 port (scene transistors, 3 characters and two players) it’s very basic in terms of gameplay with little in the way of strategy or advanced techniques needed beyond simple button mashing.
Also, you have to wonder what sort of research Capcom did when they designed London. The trains are nothing like ones in the UK and the background looks more like Gotham City than London.

  • @Hektols
    @Hektols 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

While Final Fight 2 looked better than the first Streets of Rage it doesn't change that the characters have less range of moves and the game can't show more than three enemies on screen at the same time and that problem remained in Final Fight 3 minus a small section where they 'fixed' the problem with all the enemies being the same character.
Finally, Final Fight 2 and the first Streets of Rage portrait the main graphic differences between Super Nes and Megadrive. Super Nes graphics look better while Megadrive graphics move better, there were lots of exceptions of course but that was what happened in most games.

    • @gentarofourze
      @gentarofourze 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

What do you mean by better? I see a common misconception that the colour palette meant better graphics rather than the actual sprites in games being better. also Streets Of Rage came out 2 years before Final Fight 2. When it comes down to it many games were developed for Snes then ported to Sega when if they were made for Sega from scratch they could and were often mainly better in fact in the cases where Sega games were ported to Snes the Sega versions were the superior ones, and when Snes games were ported to Sega the Snes version often looked better, the few times the Sega games looked worse was because of the devs used which is why 1st party games for both show a systems potential.

Even with Streets of Rage being inspired by Final Fight, and we can agree that Final Fight as such, especially the arcade version is still a tight game to play. But when Streets of Rage II arrived, Sega truly amped up everything to 11. So even Sega had trouble to top that off with their sequel. Final Fight 2 looks pale in comparison, kinda bloodless. I didn't even know this existed if it wasn't for bloody emulation.

I noticed the new characters, Haggar's redesign, I really wanted to like Carlos and Maki but again they didn't do enough innovation to warrant me keeping the game in my library when I was a kid. The 2 player co-op, new locations, story, and bonus stages were cool but there were no new fight mechanics. Carlos only used his sword for his desperation move but he would pick up a 2x4 or glass bottle to fight, just why? Lackluster to say the least, SOR2 was WAY better IMO as well.

One of the complaints though i had forever regarding mike hagar is that we never saw him in a SF title, since street fighter & final fight shares the same universe-world! I was hoped to see the character in SFV but again they never worked him for this game also! Instead we have the character appearing in the most unsuitable game of all that was UMVC3! Also it would be nice to see a remastered-reworked version of a collection featuring the final fight 2-3 on their beat em up bundle, since the exclusivity wear off i believe after so many years they should include also those two games on their bundle making the collection even bigger!

I too prefer arcade Final Fight over Final Fight 2 on the SNES, and also agree that Streets of Rage 2 blows away its own predecessor, in addition to FF arcade, FF SNES, and this, FF2.
However, that all said, FF2 does lots of things right as you mentioned Top Hat, but the biggest drawback for me, isn't the ok graphics and uninspired enemy designs.
It's the challenge...or should I say lack thereof.
Honestly...even on its hardest setting, the enemy characters seem to mostly just 'stand around' while you beat on them and their buddies.
To me, this made the gameplay quite tedious and boring.
Beat'em ups by their nature can be repetitive, but when a good challenge is presented (such as arcade Final Fight, both of Sega's first two SOR games, and even SNES Final Fight), then it keeps the player on his/her toes, knowing if they aren't up to snuff with their finger speed and proper positioning onscreen, the enemies WILL overwhelm them and end their game!
This just doesn't happen in FF2. I've been known to look away from the screen while someone talks to me and while mashing on the attack button and clear a screen.
I've had NON gamers sit and play the game (on the hardest setting) and do pretty well without really knowing too much about the mechanics.
So that is why I will always consider Final Fight 2 a dud.
Graphically, soundwise, two player inclusion...all of that is fine. And I can even put up with the dodgy enemy designs.
But IMO, the lack of challenge in this game just kills it for me....and with a second player onboard, it makes the game that much easier....and boring too.
Great video presentation all around though, Top Hat.

Biff Slamkovich from Slam Masters is the the character SFIII'S ALEX is based on( who is in turned based on the late ECW wrestler MIKE AWESOME, HULK HOGAN, and KEVIN VON ERICH). Biff's name in Japan is actually Alex(ALEKSEI ZALAZOFF). Biff is a prototype version of Alex.

Final Fight 3 bro! I feel like if this game was made just ONE year later, it would have epic. In those days a game from Capcom from 1994 was a giant leap from something made in 1993. Even 1995 Final Fight 3 is proof of that.

I still think, playing both franchises today, that the FF series had more polish in some areas that people tend to take for granted because they loved the music of SOF or something.
    * I always thought the fighting on FF was more simple but kept the pacing good enough for you to stay committed (Arcade-style). SOF was trying to compete on consoles, so it got more complex gameplay people could attach themselves to and if you didn't harness this gameplay correctly: you'd notice how dependant it was in order to keep better pacing.
    * The music wasn't as good as SOF but it doesn't mean it was bad at all and all of these FF games shared a certain tone that made you recognize from where the music was coming from.
    * FF's presentation and the narrative were better, easier to follow and even the characters had enough personality on their own to out-live the game they came from (even the bosses and some of the individual thugs like Poison, Andore/Hugo, Eddie, Rolento, Sodom, etc).
    * The graphics are a stronger contender among both franchises. SOF had to push the boundaries of the Sega Genesis (which is an inferior console in capabilities than the SNES) to make that game pop cool even on screenshot magazines. Streets of Rage was mad colorful which only complimented more its jazzy tone. Capcom on the other hand, had big sprites, more detailed characters and some nicely detailed backgrounds (FF2 had a murky tone all over itself, which they corrected on FF3). Whenever I played both when I was younger: I always thought that SOF was like the "little brother" of FF because of this.
Overall, even the game "feel" was also another thing that FF (being originally an Arcade game) always had right for me. Every hit sounded good, the sound effects even on the thugs' screams were satisfactory, Street Figther-esque bonus stages, the "map progression" at the beginning of every stage kept you psychologically hooked to a form of progression, the game over screens were fucking hilarious (and horrifying), etc...
After seeing this video, I came to think that Capcom was more polishing their previous experience during FF2 times than actually competing with SOF (does anybody even remember how clunky the first SOF particularly was?). Also, Capcom was favoring the Genesis with Arcade ports rather than sticking the then Nintendo-exclusive Final Fight (they had the stranged Forgotten Worlds, an Arcade faithful Ghosts N' Goblins, a watered down but still faithful Punisher, the beloved Strider port, and even Street Fighter 2 Dash was first than Turbo on SNES as far as I can remember).

All those beautiful mountains in Holland. Colour is kinda accurate though, the painters here partly became famous because of our landscape and the colour of our skies. I did not like this game so much, the reason was it was too cartoony. The original FF had an 80s vibe and was kinda realistic in the movie kind of sense of that era.

Oh my God, I never realized what the text says at the beginning of Final Fight 2..."Haggar went back to rule Metro City as mayor..." No, Japan, that's not how that works. ;)
Actually I have a question for you Mr. Top Hat Gaming Man. I myself am a world traveler as well. For example, I have been to London a few times and I have heard people say antisocial behavior before but never had it explained. The knife attacks are fairly explanatory but using antisocial is interesting. I'm guessing it means crime other than stabbings? I myself live in the States and we use that terminology differently (I think) to describe....well, generally monsters (rapists, murderers, ect...). Further, I would like to add that your assessment of New York City is most assuredly correct. Once a shining beacon of freedom for the world (like London) it has become a veritable cesspit of mass proportions.
I have never been more happy that I live in the South (it used to be different). Yes, we have crime like anywhere else but we do not have the rate of crime and our people are generally nice. I have a theory as to why this is but I don't want to turn your comments section into World War 3. ;)

Anti social behaviour are things like fighting, threatening people, being drunk and disorderly, disturbing the peace etc. Some times it can even take more minor forms such as letting your dog poo on the Street and not picking it up after yourself. Basically crimes that cause a nuisance to others.
Offenders often get given ASBOs (Anti Social Behaviour Orders)- Court orders that can be obtained by local authorities in order to restrict the behaviour of a person likely to cause harm or distress to the public.

Props THGM, love your deep dives. To be fair, never played Final Fight 2, but visually I agree it looks like a graphical and aesthetic step back from the first one. Waaaay too much dithering and cramming in of character details. I don't know what Capcom was thinking in that regard. Too loud, too busy, but takes nothing away from how much I love the first Final Fight AND it's SNES/SegaCD ports.

Looking at these games today, I am kicking myself for not buying them new. They are very pricey today. Fortunately, both this and the third game are still available on the WIi U store. After playing both, I don't think either are worth more than the $7.00 that they cost. Streets of Rage 2 is on everything today and I own more digital versions that I care to count. I have no idea why I never bought it when it was young. In fact, I barely played it back in the day. Today, it is like a new game for me. Hallelujah!

Final Fight 1 arcade is better than Streets of Rage 1 (though it still good). Sadly Final Fight 2 and 3 are not as good as any of the Streets of Rage games and Streets of Rage 4 looks to be the best of all if them (Final Fight 1 Arcade still is king though). Lol. On a side note; I love how your reference things "on the planet Earth" for when and where console war battles occurred.

This was fun to see and a nice piece of gaming history. It helped me realize there's nothing new under the sun. My main problem with the state of gaming now is the over reliance of graphics over gameplay, but I forgot Final Fight 2 is a proponent of this. That's why Streets of Rage 2 is so much better. The combat system of Streets of Rage 2 is second to none and one of the tightest of ANY beat em up in history. That's why Streets of Rage 2 is better than any Final Fight game. Gameplay>Graphics! Thanks for posting!
